View Full Version : Catalyst 9.8

well i upgraded from catalyst 9.7 to 9.8 yesterday...there is indeed a big performance boost in il2. On the Black Death track I went from average 56fps to 66fps. However about 20mins into the game it always crashes and sends me back to desktop.
If anyone figures out a way to run the 9.8's without the crash problem I'd like to hear it, I could use the performance gain.

I'm using vista32 and asus HD3870.

Someone runs a game with out issue. then they change drivers and start to get crashes so you
blame it on the OS?
Prejudiced nonsense!

Sure, why not? Change a driver is as radical sometimes as swapping components if the OS doesn't support one aspect of the new drivers.
...or...oh hell...clean the fans, sounds like heat.

the latest ATI recommended driver for vista32 and 3870 is the 9.8, so I don't think I was going out on a limb too much by trying them out. I've already rolled back to 9.7 and have no problems now with il2. In fact the 9.8's fixed a separate problem i was having with company of heroes, and along with the big performance boost in both games I was hoping I could stick with them.
All I was asking was if anyone knew of any simple setting change that might allow the 9.8's to run without the il2 ctd issue.
Anyone else tried the 9.8's yet?

Try messing around with the Catalyst AI in the CCC. Try all three settings and see if there is a difference.

Vista 64 & a 3870 X2 here. I installed the 9.8s on Monday and have had a couple of multi-hour sessions in Il2 on Hyperlobby with no problems at all.

Did you change anything else on your system?

Also like Coastie said, check your CCC settings and make sure that nothing changed there.

How about the HSFs on your card and CPU? Could they need a bit of cleaning?

I watercool my card, so I don't know what normal fan behaviour is on the 3870s. Is the fan speeding up enough to keep it cool?

Does this happen online, offline, both? In just one mission, all missions?

Does it happen with any application other than IL2? Especially in any application that uses OGL? I'm assuming that you are running IL2 in OGL mode rather than DX mode. If so, try DX mode and see if it happens there. If not, try OGL and see what happens.

There is a reason that it's happening. You just have to track it down.

thanks for suggestions, i don't think it's a heat issue, like i said it runs fine on the 9.7's and my card rarely goes above 70 deg C. I didn't change any other settings, and the problem happened on different maps. I only tried online coz that's all i play.
Rather than spending a day trying out different settings i think i'll stick with the 9.7's. Maybe i'll give 9.9 a shot when it comes out.
I don't think i'm the only one having this problem....
