over the past few days i have heard of alot of different and unique types of weapons that were used way back when. like a Buster sword for an example (like Cloud's from FF7) i heard that they did exist and they were used as both shield and sword, they were really large with a long handle, the blade was wide and rested on ones shoulder and acted as a shield. Is it real??? i have also heard of God Swords, apparently another type of massive weapon. If you know anything about those feel free to fill me in, im very curious, and im also curious to find out what other things are out there, im personally not like a... swordologist, if thats even a word or profession, but one of you might be http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif thanks

Don't you think those would be a little to hard to swing around?

yess, but it would be swung by using the momentum (yes i spelt that wrong) from the blow to carry it down and out...hard to explain but the way i was showed it makes sense on how it might be useful

Basically every weapon used in video games and movies has been invented, or at least the idea was drawn from a weapon similar to it. However, most weapons like that are terribly impractical which is why they aren't well known.

If you want information on swords, or anything for that matter, visit Google. While it may be tempting asking a bunch of preteens about their knowledge of swords, I am confident that you will find more detail elsewhere.

You swing around like a windmill, hoping that the enemies will run into your sword, and hoping they don't have any archers.

A similar weapon would be bankai which would be like a spear but with a giant *** sword on the end.

I've never played dynasty warriors, not my type of game, but a bankai is, or rather was, a real type of weapon.

I could be wrong, as I don't really know what a "bankai" is, but if it's as Warrior-Within2 described it, then I don't think Guan Yu's weapon was one. I believe it would more accurately be called a glaive or naginata (glaive would probably be more accurate, since naginata is a japanese/samurai weapon, and Guan Yu most certainly was not japanese.)

What's so special about a wooden katana? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif I'm just curious because that's an interesting choice, choosing a bokken instead of katana. I'm assuming you probably take kenpo or kendo lessons, or used to, then?

As for the OP's question, I'm no expert but I agree with Borenson. Buster swords probably did exist in some form, but I highly doubt they were very effective. It seems to me like they would combine the drawbacks of swords and polearms. Its length, like that of a polearm, would make it unwieldy. Polearms, however, balance that prospective unwieldiness with the long handle: with your hands further apart, you can bring the weapon into a horizontal position to block quicker. The buster sword wouldn't have that to balance it out, as a sword handle wouldn't be long enough for such versatility.

Again, I could be wrong, but that's my opinion.
