View Full Version : 'Real' Smoke work-around for BoB, and possibly FB, any thoughts Oleg?

What I have always found strange about this sim, is the fact that smoke always rises in a vertical pillar and never drifts.

Looking at lots of WW2 pictures and footage, smoke can be seen trailing across the landscape as the wind blows it (as well as large vertical pillars too!).

A few years ago, a film called "Dinosaur" was released by Disney. They were having problems making grass look realistic, and then one of the guys worked out that the new fur textures that they had developed for the animals, when turned to various shades of green, would look superb as grass...and it worked!

So, in BoB and FB, surely it is (will) possible to change the clouds colour to Black or dark Grey, and then generate a cloud over an object.

I figure that the clouds are already generated in the game, and that they are given a colour when they are rendered by the game engine.

If the clouds could be generated at 0 to 30 feet, then they could cover the landscape as smoke.

The same applies to early morning mist. Rather than White, couldn't it be Grey or black, to make it look like low-lying smoke over the landscape?

Although were are in the later years of FB, it still impresses me the things that can be done with it, and yet if it is a 'Bridge too Far', I hope that this (especially with it's new cloud fronts) can be incorporated into BoB.

I just thought that bombing areas and the like would look so much more effective with low lying, drifting smoke, than the chimney pot effect we have at the moment!

Ah, well, thanks for taking the time to read this, cheers, MP.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Very good idea. But this will consume a LOT of performance. Lets imagine online fight where 10 planes just crashed and you see them simoutaineously. However, it could be implemented for future. I know how much smoke can slow games like counter-strike. Maybe it could be optimised somehow but I didn't see that kind of optimisation yet.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Mysticpuma that is fantastic thinking. THANK YOU!! The effect should be restricted to large sources of smoke such as destroyed targets like ammo trains, oil refineries, etc..., but not individual aircraft crash sites.

And it will consume no performance, at least if the classic Old FB/PF clouds are used to build smoke towers -- the smoke clouds could of various sizes and be stacked to make 20,000 foot oil refinery fire smoke.

* The New Clouds hurt some framerate and to me, they look worse than Old Clouds. I never use New Clouds for these 2 reasons.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Dynamic moving of various sizes of clouds would't take a lot of performance ? Maybe I imagined too large smoke clouds. And to dynamic. With proper tuning it would work.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

9. Make a few new cloud types. One would be kinda large with a flat bottom. Another would start as a small area, and as it goes up it widens, and fans out in one direction. All would be BLACK (could be two versions, one black, one gray). These are placable smoke clouds to represent damage from previous strikes. They are static like current clouds, so it shouldn't hit FR more than any cloud does now.

That's what I'm thinking -- not too dynamic. Like, each cloud shape updates to a new and slightly different shape once every 10 seconds, and not in "real time" which would have to be at least 20 times a second. The reason is that towering smoke clouds viewed from 100 miles distance are basically near static objects that change very slowly, unlike say, a flak puff exploding just outside the cockpit. Such a flak puff must change very fast, in "real time" so to speak. There are many methods to model the atmospheric air war environments, and many time scales from less than a second (flak puffs) to several minutes (large thunderstorm clouds for example).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Guys look at the smoke from the chimneys in Company of Heroes. Fantastic. and the effects, blasts etc.
IL2 is really getting old in the tooth compared to some of the new graphics games.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Which is why I said "BoB" too!

I'd love to see smokey areas though...gives you a sense of real damage across the landscape.
