I'd like to know if there is a tool or an easy way to mod the default campaigns so that I can assign any flyable aircraft to the campaign?

Is it possible to just edit a file somewhere?

Right now I own the original IL2 and that's what I want to work with (don't tell me to go buy a new game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thanks!

Not sure about this but it seems to me that you could copy the campaign mission to Notepad, edit it to your hearts content then put it in the appropriate Sinle Mission folder i.e.; DE for a German mission, RU for a Russian mission, then put it in the plane folder of the plane you're flying. If that folder doesn't exist, make one. I don't think you need to do anything but call it what it is, i.e. Yak9, Bf109, but I could be wrong.
Of course since you only copied the mission, the campaign remains intact.

Someone smarter will come along and straighten me out if I made an error here or may very well have a simpler answer.

AgentBif, yes it is possible, but requires editing the campaign planesXxX.dat file in notepad.

1) First, find the campaign planesXxX.dat file in the DGen folder, where XxX is the nationality and specific campaign (planesDeB.dat for example is the German Bomber campaign.)

2) Next, save an original copy of this file somewhere else, in case things go wrong.

3) Open the version you intend to edit with notepad, and insert the aircraft type(s) you wish to fly under the appropriate campaign portions (Lvov, Crimea, Stalingrad, etc.) These additional aircraft will now appear in the campaign aircraft pull-downs when you create a new campaign. Don't change the name of the .dat file, and be sure to use the games nomenclature for the individual aircraft types, or it won't recognize them. The list (to the best of my knowledge) is here, and includes Ai only aircraft, which cannot be used as player aircraft in DGen. For aircraft listed as "not supported by DGen as flyable", even though there are cockpits for these aircraft, they don't work in DGen as player flyable for campaigns:
