I'd like to announce that part one of Storm Clouds is now available for download at Mission4Today.com. You can download it from here:
http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=777

Part One is a 14 mission campaign featuring the Hawker Tempest Mark V and the North West Germany map. You'll be flying in historically inspired and researched missions including Tempest specific types of missions like low level tactical recon. Part One takes place during March 1945 while 122 Wing was stationed almost exclusively at B.80 Volkel.

And now for a few pictures.

(In the read me it looks like it should extract to the correct folders automatically. It did'nt for me)

Where did it extract to for you?

JG52Uther
06-24-2006, 03:47 PM
I extracted it into my game folder, and then manually put the files where they have to go.Its no problem (as I have done it many times) but the read me gives the impression of a self installer of all files.(to me anyway.it could be confusing to newbies)
Looks like a great campaign http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

VW-IceFire

You should be able to extract it into the game folder and it will drop everything in just fine. I wanted to make sure thats working right and its clear.

Its not really a self installer but if you follow the instructions its supposed to work. If there's anything I can clear up in that instruction set please let me know and I'll be sure to correct it. I want to make it as painless as possible http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

IceFire,

Another great piece of work http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I've flown the first 3 missions and I'm having lots and lots of fun. Certainly the Tempest is a fine bird to fly.

Thanks so much for offering this campaign to the community http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Just did no.1. Lovely! I like the random feeling of the flak positions, really keeps you on your toes. The skin you have chosen is good, too. best thing is that I get to fly for a New Zealand squadron! There's a bonus.
I had forgotten how nice that NW Europe map was, such good clarity on the ground surfaces. Makes me realise how much of a green desert the older maps are.

Just to confirm: I unzipped the files to the main game folder and all went well. The campaign folder and skins are all where they should be.

Thx for this Icefire. Having not flown for about three months, I think it's time to get back into the hot seat.

P.S. Nice ReadMe file. It seems about time that we got away from the traditional Notepad ReadMe.

PPS ReadMe omissions/errors:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI> Under Installation and Requirements #1, it reads: "if your reading", rather than "if you're reading"
<LI> Under Installation and Requirements #3, it reads: "You should the following:", rather than maybe "should see"
[/list]

Hardly worth mentioning, except it's such a professional piece of work...

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

@Uther, I'm glad it worked the second time around. I tried to make it as painless as possible without having to go the self extracting EXE route (I prefer ZIPs).

@Nutcase: I appreciate that for sure. I will make the necessary modifications on future iterations of the readme file. I did spend some time on the readme and I love that HTML can give me so many options while still remaining very small. I considered PDF as well but I think this will work. Aside from a very small warning my HTML readme will validate to W3C standards as well http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have to say this campaign is amazing, I dont play many user made campaigns, but this is nevertheless the best I have played so far.

No long boring flights to the target with nothing happening, always action going on, you are either under attack from flak, Me262's attacking the af as you take off, coming across returning Ju88's on your return trip, or some action is happening.

Very carefully made, professional campaign. Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not that geeky this time around...Transitional 4.01. I didn't go strict either...that was too much for me for such little gain. But I did test it in IE, Firefox, and Opera. I figure that covers the bases.

You didnt pick a high enough rank, if you cannot choose bombs.

Pick Wing COmmander or the higher one, then go to the aircraft setup screen.

You also have the beneifit of issuing orders to your flight if you do this, which means you have some protection when you go off on your own http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I cant wait to try this campaign out!

But, the honest truth is, I've tried the Tempest, and find it to be the hardest allied plane to fly of that era...

Any links to tips/tutorials? Without further hijacking of this thread? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Fly it like a FW190A or FW190D. See the FW190 tips thread and pretty much stick to that.

Its essentially the British FW190, massive firepower, very fast, but dont try and turn too much in it.

YOur best defensive weapon is your speed, put your nose down a little and vrrroooom to get away from enemies, try not to jink or turn, you will loose more speed. Always keep an eye behind you and if any enemy is getting to close, nose down and extend away.

It is definitely not a stall fighter - dont fly it like Spitfire. If your speed is under 400k then you are too slow.

thanks xiolablu3,

if fact im comfortable with the 190, i guess i assumed since its a british plane, its a turn fighter!

Hitherto (i always wanted to say that word) i shall fly it BnZ style http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah everyone looks at the Tempest, notices the eliptical wings and the British design, and assumes that its another Hurricane and Spitfire with superb turning. Its definately not a good turn fighter...its OK in a pinch and the big wings let it have a great initial turn rate but sustained turn rate is not good. The only types you should even try and turn with for a long time are FW190s. Even then...it pays more to BNZ them as well.

Just stay fast, try and maximize your speed, use those superbly designed laminar flow wings to keep your energy up and you'll be fine.

Great campaign IceFire.

I tell you, I was never a massive fan of off-line, I always play on-line, but thought I'd give this a go and it was really fun!

The nice touches like the intro movie, introducing you to the squadrons base, reminded me of stories I'd read, and captured my imagination.

Missions are fun, although I cheat a bit and use x8 and autopilot for the long distance haul http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

How do I view waypoints on my map? (This shows how little I've played off-line, really).

I'm about half way through the campaign, and it's really fun. Is there a way to change the difficulty? I feel like such an ace in the sky, with the enemies just dropping like a stone after a few hits... I'd like a little more of a fight from the AI http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Very atmospheric and fun, cheers!

You have to select to view the mini map path and other difficulty options before you start the campaign. There is a toggle for "difficulty" on the campaign selection screen.

Very nice campaign IceFire, many thanx for your dedication.
I went as far as mission No 13 I think (March 17th, 17h30, escort 309s Mustangs ) and I've got a small prob: the Germans now speak ...Japanese ....
How can one fix that ??
Thanx in advance.

How are you hearing Germans? No Germans on the RAF side. 309 Squadron Mustangs...that is Polish squadron. You should hear Polish. If you hear Japanese then its a problem with your installation and what voice files are where. Sounds a bit odd.

IceFire, thank you very much for this great campaign I downloaded and flew a couple of missions.
I really like what you did at the home airfield (I usually make a few low passes before landing, I really enjoy the view, all the parked aircraft, etc.)
Another thing that I like so far is the enemy artillery hidden in towns, you have to be aware all the time.
Great work http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Flak was everywhere over Germany in 1945...its going to be a bit worse in part two...mostly because you're moving bases closer to the front and there is more flak in smaller areas. Don't worry...playtesting to make it fun in the end.

Many thanks for the effort and care you've put into this campaign IceFire, your love of the Tempest really shows through and this campaign shows it off at it's best.

I'm not making it through as fast as some here due to time restrictions but it's the first time in a long time I've really enjoyed offline flying.

best mission ive had so far was 5... i think its 5...

intercepted some d9s. i was leading the second group of 4 and dove down on the last few D9s that passed below... got the tail end charlie with my first pass. pulled up and met the lead D9 and got him streaming glycol from long deflection shot from below... followed him way out and eventually severed his left wing. .... as i banked back to my group blue tracers zipped by my canopy. the lead D9's wingman!!! he wanted revenge... i flicked the best over as fast and carefully as possible and dove away.... i cant remember what happened next but i managed to get free and my group eventually caught up and downed him...

we regrouped and headed south west . I checked my map i saw that there was a Luft airfield so i decided to check it out... it took my group (leaving the first off somewhere else) and headed off to do so TAC recon. as i drew closer i noted 4 black dots 1 o'clock low! i poured on the coals and told my group to follow. as i got closer i saw smoke trails .... 262's!!! probably just took off... EASY MEAT!... i swooped in at there 4 o'clock and gave the last of the 4 262's a good burst... my deflection was PERFECT all my round found there make.. BOOM! scratch one jet. i pulled up and to my right just in time to catch one of my wingmen flame one of the other 3 jets.. (AI's got good aim i thought) i was carrying plently of spped still so i rolled back over and dove on the lead jet... as i closed he dropped his payload and tried to break right... but too late. i slammed his right wing and engine sending hiim into a vicious stall... too low to bail... poor fellow.

i was gettign greedy and turned hard to finish off the last one but just as i leveled out i saw a bright flash.. my number 4 beat me to it.

after regrouping again i decided that was enough and so i directed my flight straight back to base at tree top level.... its i bit unerving to see flack shell exploding on the ground infront of you as ur going 550kph at 20 meters... but its also alot of fun!

Thanks again Ice ... 10/10 so far!

I also liked that no 5 mission. One weird thing: I kind of found myself alone at some moment after the encounter with the doras. No wingman, no enemy nothing, but after a while I spoted 3 AC flying level in a bee-line about 300m height, wide appart. I thought I would take a look, and after a while I caught up with the last one (nice AC the tempest, I was flying level about 520 Km/h without much effort), it was a german jet. It would just fly straight and the moment I shot it down I saw the second jet opening fire on the unidentified plane in front. I caught up with this one too and shot it down, once again without seeing any evasive trick from his part. The unidentified plane in front was my poor wingman http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Never in my testing did those Me-262 ever enter into the scenario but I thought they just might depending on how the fight went. Fascinating! Glad it worked out that way. I try and do those things on purpose but I can't always get them to work for me...obviously they do for others.

I'm working on part two. My only concern for adoption of part two will be the use of some of the extra addon package stuff like the new flak batteries and I REALLY want to use the Ar-234 when it comes but I know some of you folks don't want to go that route right now. Stuff to ponder.

I found those Me262's on the way home too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Luckily I caught them just as they were making low level attacks on some friendly ground troops, and I took them down one after another.
