View Full Version : OT - My tiny homebuilt plane...

Well it IS a plane. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif And it sure is tiny (18mm)
This is what happens when jewellery makers start sharing studio space with furniture designers:

It was fun to make though.
Let the jokes about my small 'tool' begin http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

What materials Feathered?

Yep, its a ring http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Not really a wearable though more one of those 'just because' projects.

Its made form sterling silver and copper withich really give a nice woody effect. The inner band was originally going to be 18ct gold but I bought a new video card instead http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

There are two more rings in the set. One is like a bench vise (my favourite) and the other a spoke shave. I just couldn't resist the 'plane pun though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Astounding workmanship!

Thats amazing...
I'd wear it on special occasions.
I could see where it could hang up on things.
But I did a job for years where a block plane was your most used tool.
I know several people who'd be delighted with a gift of a Plane ring.

Very cool.. the black is silver oxide (tarnished silver)? If not, what and how did you get the color?

Very nice work indeed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Glad you all like it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Tully, you are right. The black is silver that has been treated with livre of sulphide. It puts a nice patina onto the surface. You can get the stuff in soluble rock form from jewellers supply places but strangely, the best type is the liquid made by Yates that gardeners put on their roses http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Heres one of the sister pieces too. Sorry the photo quality is so bad though:

Never could say no to a lady http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Bear in mind its still very much a WIP and probably the runt of the litter too I think. When its done though, I hope to have it with a thin curl of the copper ring material comming out of the top and a shiny trail behind like its slowly peeling the ring down.
Again, sorry the photo is so horrible http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

Very cool, I always admire beautiful craftsmanship . I bet you enjoy your work tremendously. One of my sisters is a jewelry maker too, but her stuff is much more on the abstract side of the fence.
