Hi all,

I have been looking a bit through these forums, but haven't really yet found what I was looking for, so I would highly appreciate if someone could either answer my questions here or point me to some place where I can find the answers! 1. I have just bought a new CH Fighterstick USB and Pro Throttle USB, which seem to be really cool, however, what is the best way to set them up ? And I don't mean just the axis, but a sensible layout to put on all the buttons so I really dont need the keyboard anymore (aside from maybe eject, which I dont want on the joystick, as to not press it accidentally... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) [oh and I mapped the gear down/up button to one of the buttons on the Throttle, but for some reason it never did anything, gear always stayed down on the F4... any ideas ?]

2. I haven't played flightsims for a long time now (due to the lack of a good joystick), last thing I played was Falcon 4 (when it first came out) and a bit Jane's F-15 and F-18, but I got a private pilot license, so I got some background (at least in Cessnas and Pipers and such http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif). Does it make sense to start with the highest realism settings, or shall I wait and set some things to less realistic, if so what would you recommend ? [so far I have only tried taking off from carrier which took me a couple of attemps, and a few approaches with (survivable) crash-landings on the deck]

3. I got a TrackIR3 with vector expansion, which I used a lot lately in racing sims (namely GTR), have just used the default setting for PF for it. Think that will be ok in the long run, or any recommendations on how to tweak it (in my first babysteps that I did last evening I didn't have much of a problem with it, aside from my leaning back and looking up accidentelly, just before I crashed, which I found kinda funny http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

4. Practising missions: I think it would be much better to practise from a landbase and do touch&go's there before even thinking about carrier ops, but I didn't find any missions for that. I take it I have to create my own in the mission editor (which I havent looked into at all yet). Is that true ? Or have I just missed something ? Or is there any available for download somewhere ? (just plain and simple take off and land on some runway, without being bothered by other planes or anything)

5. Stall speeds: Where do I best get the stallspeeds for the different planes from ? Also with the virtual cockpit using the TrackIR I found it a bit hard to read all the instruments, esp. the speed. And not knowing how low I can go speedwise didn't help either. When I did stall I was most often way too low to recover, also for some reason the nose-down, full-counterrudder technique didn't seem to have too much effect for some reason (only tried the F4-3 or what its called so far). [also: did those WW2 planes have stallwarnings, like in more modern planes ?]

6. Plane to use: Which one do you recommend for me to get started in ? Ie which one is a good "Navy Flying School" plane ? So I get to know how to operate all the things on it ?

7. Engine sound: To me the engine sound didnt seem to be loud enough compared to other noises in the game, I would like it a bit louder, cause from real flying I am used to hear my engine better to hear if it sounds "unhealthy" if you see what I mean (but then this might be a setup problem of my sound system ? I got a 5.1 system recently, maybe I have to balance it better or something)

8. Good bomber: Which one is a good bomber to fly for a beginner (ie after I have practised with smaller planes to get used to landing/takeoff, general flying ops in this game, etc) ? Ideally one which can later be used on carriers too. (Would love to fly a bomber with my wife being a gunner http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

I use a CH set up, with a Pro Throttle, Pedals and either a Fighterstick or Yoke (depends how I feel - I'm into the yoke at the moment).

I think if you fly for a while longer, you'll get a feel for where you want the controls to be, but I use the following:

THrottle (left hand)
Engine related controls - power on the axis, prop and mixture on the top thumb button, gear, hook, radiator flaps on the bottom one, select engine & related nonsense - why don't they model multiple engines properly??!!! - on the high hat. WEP, release drop tanks and comms on the finger buttons. I don't use the mini-stick thing.

Stick/Yoke - weapons, control surfaces (trim, flaps, etc.), view related controls (gunsight, normal & wide view and show map on the high hat (I use TrackIR so don't need it). My light & smoke controls live here at the moment, too - though I notice there's a 4-way high hat I don't use very often on the throttle so may move them over there.

This seemed a pretty logical organisation and helps me remember where everything is... easier to remember groups than individual items... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

By the way - some aircraft don't have 'hydraulic' gear so undercarriage needs to be lowered or raised manually - you'll need to set a button for both up and down.

The good news is that you can program CH buttons to give multiple commands so you can still do this with a single button click. Otherwise, you'll be hammering away at the keyboard like a mad thing - I think 40 separate key presses are required to raise/lower gear on the Wildcat. If you are a realism junkie then this might suit you... the more seasoned pilots of the time reckoned you could always tell a newbie by the way their aircraft wobbled and pitched while they were winding their gear up after take off... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Not sure about your particular stick (I use a Microsoft Sidewinder) but I have found it useful to use the shoot 1.6 voice recognition software in flight sims. This is a FOC download and all you need is a cheap pair of headphones with a mic and you can issue any command you can think of by saying the word i.e. gear for landing gear etc. It works great and saves fumbling around on the keyboard at crucial moments!

Re: Pedals - I actually have some pedals from my MS Sidewinder wheel, which seem to do for now (have no toetip-brakes obviously, but seems good enough for now)

I recommend starting with all the flight physics set on (Stalls & Spins, Turbulence, Torque effects, Complex Engine Management etc...) but choose whatever view/cockpit settings you like.

4. Practising missions:
Use Quick Mission Builder for target practice and combat practice. Use the Multiplayer/Create New Server option to create a dogfight server for takeoff/landing practice on land bases. You'll be the only plane in the mission, so you only have to worry about enemy AA if you stray too close their bases, not other aircraft.

5. Stall speeds:
Fly level and power off and see what speed the nose drops away. That's how I do it. Except for a few of the early war aircraft, a good rule of thumb is 170km/h (106mph) clean, 140km/h full flaps. It may be a fraction lower for a true stall, but it takes almost no control input at those speeds to provoke a stall.

6. Plane to use:
Anything you fancy. They all have their quirks.

Cool, thanks for the reply, will do that!

Played around some more last evening setting up my controls, but ended up having the Pro Throttle fully used up but the Fighter Stick aside from the fire buttons all empty. So have to optimize it some more so both hands have an adequatly distributed workload.

ALSO you can get control manager maps to download and use with your controls. using the control manager takes time to figure out, but they also have a tutorial there made by Ghost that is very helpful.

But that's that mini 50 or 70 page one, isn't it ? I thought there might be something more detailed as well (not that it really matters, but what are newbies gonna do, if there is no more info on flying basics ?)

The question that still remains for me is:

Where do I get for example the best rpm settings for max. propeller efficiency and things like that (for example Vx and Vy) ?
