Hi all,

I'm looking for another flight simulator, which could allow to fly modern planes like 737 or so...
Off course, there is FS2004, but do you know another ones? better ones? I'm thinking of target ware or X-plane, but I don't know how they are.

Any suggestion and advice is welcome.

TY,
Mistral

X-Plane's good, but FS2004 is alright too. Just as long as you don't get it into a fatal spin and it goes up instead of down. That's been a bug with the FS series and CFS series since day 1.

Get x-Plane and be pleased that there is:
Good FM in general
Well done Rotorcraft, VTOL (harrier/Osprey, Carter Copter)
Realisitc, and powerful weather such as microbursts and wind-shear
The Ability to design, build and flight test aircraft (X-Plane is also a digital wind tunnel!)
Be anoyed by X-Plane because:
the terrain details are poor, and the included scenery is minimal so you have to download little tiles to cover the US since the default install will place most runways floating 1000 feet over ocean.
Some things on some panels are near impossible to read even at best quality, like the frequencies in the NAV/COMS, and sometimes the default panels are missing things to make the aircraft suitable for IFR. (though you just them in the included plane maker)
Runway and Taxiway locations aren't really true to real life so if you are flying using VATSIM (a must for any serious flight simmers or real world pilots) then expect ground controllers to bug you when they see you taxi across the dirt and through the airport fence. . . and sometimes they will tell you taxi to bravo via taxiway two. . .and there will be no taxiway two. . .kinda embarassing ;-P

Get FS2004 for:
Better eye candy for scenery, terrain, and cockpits (in particular virtual cockpits)and aircraft (though some in X-Plane rival the external details in FS2004).
Many more airports and accurate navaids, with no need to download any extra scenery and usually they are in the right location and more or less accurate representations of things like runways and taxiways (if not accurate, they are at least there). Sometimes I will be on an airway and will tune a VOR to triangulate position and the cross radial VOR isn't there. . .usually it is. . .but not always.
There are really well done freeware planes, scenery, panes, avionics, etc. and with the right downloads the sim is pretty darn good even in the FM department. The problems arise when you do aerobatics, which are the downfall of FS2004, but for normal jet and light GA aircraft flying it's pretty good.

I just own both. . . and use each for their respective talents.

But if that's not your thing, I think this list should help you decide what might be more suitable for what you want to do.

OK, thank you very much.
I was curious to see advices from IL2 players on this subject, although just mentionning "FS" on these forums can easely turn to a flamm war. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

See you,

Note: If you already have the VFR scenery for the UK you can use this with X-Plane by buying a cheap program to modify the files. (See below).

More general info on X-Plane is in the linked thread below:
