When doin these lists i hardly ever take into account single player games, despite the fact that some of em are truly very enjoyable (such as COD and Descent Freespace 1) because as soon as I win them i forget about em and dump em but I always mention the ones that I enjoy online or for some reason like to replay in singleplayer
So my list:
1. The Descent series (1, 2 & 3) 6 degrees of freedom all the way down babay!
2. CFS 1 (hard to forget the danged thing, flew it for like 7 years)
3. IL2 series (specially IL2 the original game and FB 1.0)
4. GTA series (GTA3 is my fav)
5. Half Life 1 (still mid way thru 2, but i stopped playin and decided to wait till i got a better computer to play it in cos i think im missin on much playin it with mid graphics)

non PC -Chess

Thats about the extent of my gaming. I have some other PC things that I have fooled with over the years like Warbirds, B-17,Fighter Ace.... Crimson Skies and some of the Star Wars stuff but as far as time and PC gaming goes nothing has come close to the time I spend with this series except the time I spent in CFS1.

1) Mech warrior 3 (and the later additions)

Half life 2 is an excellent game, so is deer hunter 2005!

02-20-2005, 02:03 PM
Of course IL2 goes at the top of my list as it's longest lasting game I've ever had on my system! More hours of gone into this than any other game in my possesion over the years.
My list goes beyond the PC though...

1: IL2 Series (PC, mostly played online)

2: Max Payne 1+2 (PC, very well thought out and love the movie/comic book style. Bullet time was an amazing inovation to gaming. Great ragdoll FX too).

4: Doom 3 (PC, truly amazing graphics. Plays like a rendered FMV sequence. First close-up of that bad guy with the dodgy eye WOW! The level of detail is stunning. The monsters are literally out of this world. Gameplay gets a little repetitive though. I liked the ending).

5: Tomb Raider (Playstation, the first original game that set the ball rolling for many more imitations. Was blown away when I first saw that dinosaur charging towards me in 'The hidden Valley' IIRC. It was great completing the levels and wondering what surprises were on the next. Stunning game and I still play the original from time to time on my PC with a PSX emulator).

6: Phoenix (Stand up arcade machine, accompanied by a bag of chips at my local fish and chip shop when I was a wee schoolkid on a dinner break, can still smell those chips now!).

7: Avalon + Dragontorc (48K Spectrum, first 'adventure' game I ever played and was instantly hooked. Felt like I'd saved the world when I completed it, and the graphics were great for 1983-4!).

8: Head over Heels (48K + 128K Spectrum, amazing gameplay and a whole 'world' crammed into less than 48K of Ram. Incredibly thought out and a simply brilliant game. 128K had better sound).

9: Cadaver (Amiga 500, absolutely brilliant adventure game with lovely graphics and sound. Very clever with nice puzzles and low and behold I play it on my PC with an Amiga emulator).

10: Lemmings (Amiga 500, brilliant and clever puzzler with very funny sounds from the lemmings. Filled a notepad writing down all the codes to the levels!! Couldn't resist hitting the Armageddon button to hear them squeak 'Oh No!' and then explode. ROFTL. Have it on my PC too).

That took me back.

Nice post Huggy.

I still have it, and went through heck to get my Saturn system back from an old buddy of mine who borrowed it about six and a half years ago.

Finally go the system back, only to find that he lost the video cable...yeah, the one that is different than all others and is difficult to find.

I'd really love to play it again...Hopefully someday I can find the cable!

02-20-2005, 07:33 PM
1. IL2 series
2. Hidden and Dangerous 2
4. Call of Duty
5. Myst series

02-20-2005, 07:46 PM
I thought I was going to be the only one to mention Tomb Raider. LOL.

So as most have said..."in no particular order'

1) Tomb Raider.
2) Prince of Persia (original...tho Sands of
Time was good too)
3) Starfox on the Super Nintendo
4) C&C
5) MFS 98, 2004
6) Xevious , Defender (Arcade)
7) Grand Tourismo- tho now that I have a decent
computer I can't wait for the US release of
8) Madden Football
9) Legend of Zelda (purely innocent RPG fun that
made you forget the world sometimes stunk)

Awwww who am I kiddin MY #1 pick would be IL2 series, hands down. I've logged more flight time on this game than all others combined. That in itself shows how GREAT this series is.

Lot's of good games mentioned.
More and more come back to my memory, and I remember them fondly.

As someone mentioned earlier, when that T-Rex (in the ORIGINAL Tomb Raider)chases you in the valley it's a bit of gaming that you NEVER forget. 20 years from now if someone asks my most memorable gaming event I'd STILL say the first time the ground starts shaking and you are chased by the Dinosaur.

Once you go Track... you never go back.

3. Planescape Torment

I'm surprized to see this one mentioned. A great game--deep and thought-provoking, but so often over looked.

1. Planescape: Torment (a very creative and deep RPG. Requires a lot of reading; thought-provoking)

2. Il-2

3. Pharaoh (a lighthearted & fun city building game; more engaging than Simcity)

4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past [Super NES] - I've played through and enjoyed this game so many times, I can't not mention it here.

5. Black Isle's Infinity Engine games:
Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale (& Planescape: Torment)
I've enjoyed every one of these games all the way through. I was never into D&D before, but these are the games that first really got me into PC gaming. The Baldur's Gate games have a better storyline, but I've always enjoyed the more tactical Icewind Dale games more. Ps:T is from another world altoghter.

Honourable mentions:

Goldeneye [James Bond] on N64, Nightfire on Xbox
My friends & I have played a lot of multiplayer with these two. Tried others, these seem to be the biggest hits. (I should mention that most of my friends don't get into PC games at all)

Hearts of Iron
I've spent a lot of time on this game, and I'm only just beginning to understand all the aspects of its gameplay--in other words, just my kind of game. A WWII Grand Strategy game. You see it asked about here from time to time. I think most here would like it if they gave it a chance.

Dr. Mario [NES]
My inlaws play this constantly at family functions. I'd always liked the game, but they've shown me a new level of competition.

I used to really enjoy table top war strategy games like "Carrier Strike."

But alas, the computer age came and the imagination age went.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Now if we go way back... Spin the bottle was the best game when I was in say 5th grade... EVERYONE wanted their spin to point at Renee Lewis! heheh... :Smooch:

Yatzee was my parents favorite... Well it was my Mom's favorite, and my Dad merely played along so he could have some peace when Football or Hockey came on TV.

But I have to say my favorite game of ALL-TIME was that table top football game where you clicked the button and the players moved... My friends and I would sprinkle flour on the field to play snow games, keep stats, and play an entire season with all the NFL teams! In the summer we would play a table top baseball game (I think it was called Strat-O-Matic Baseball) whenever we werent playing or watching the real thing.

We also liked our dangerous games like "Lawn Darts." But we used to play "Chicken Lawn Darts." That's where you throw the dart high in the air while everyone stands in a tight group, and the last person to run wins. (Or is hit by the lawn dart - I have a scar on my leg where one got me one day...LOL) On occasion, we would play a variation of that game using a bow and arrow. We also liked to play "War" with BB guns. No one had eye protection though... It is a wonder that no one ever got seriously hurt! ROFL!!

Oh, as far as computer games.. I would have to say the IL2 series is probably the best... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What can I say. IL2 in most of its forms. (not that impressed with PF). Others over the years have been:

Maxpayne 1 + 2. Can't get enough of it and I have to play it again whenever I upgrade the graphics card.

Turrican 1, 2 and 3 - Amiga classic and takes some beating by any platform genre

Superfrog - Another amiga classic

Silent Service 2 - Amiga again. Deck gunning a ships with lethal accuracy!

Unreal Tournament - Best online with instagib on CTF

Maniac Minor - 48k speccy. I can hear the tune now... 20 levels or torture but well worth it. You just had to make some jumps pixel perfect or else!! Zap

Chuckie Egg - Acorn Electron (Home BBC Micro computer) 16 levels or repetitive addiction.

Man I just cant stop playing great games... Last but not least

Tetris on the Gameboy. Still have my original one purchased back in Nov 91. Burnt some hours on that baby!!!

5 just wont cut a decent list.. I hope to add many more as age is on my side http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

YOU SIR are worthy of my friendship. I wonder why almost no one else has played the descent series. Back in the day when people were "WOW! look at doom! it's like a first person shooter where u walk and shoot stuff LOLKTHXBYE" Descent came out and TOTALLY DESTROYED doom, and ALL FPS ever since.

In other words
Descent > the world

5. Just picked up the C&C Collection and though at this point I've only played Tiberian Sun and its expansion, I have to say that the C&C series moves in as one of my favorites and can't figure out why I never got to them until now. I hope I can find the older ones.

I understand where you're coming from bear, but this is an "ALL TIME" list - FB/AEP/PF and even the original IL-2 are relatively recent.... if you have been gaming for 20 years (as I have) you tend to get through a lot of games. I could easily add another 30 games to my list above...

In fact http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif I borrowed a speccy 48k in summer '87 - yep the one with the rubber keys....
