FAA Corsairs

I'm trying to gather information on operational Corsairs with the Fleet Air Arm, and put together a time line for reference.

I have found a source stating that FAA Corsairs performed their first combat action on 3 April 1944, with Number 1834 Squadron flying from the HMS VICTORIOUS to help provide cover for a strike on the German super-battleship TIRPITZ in a Norwegian fjord. This was apparently the first combat operation of the Corsair off of an aircraft carrier.

Also while April '44 was supposidly the first operational use of the FAA Corsair, I have found info stating that FAA squadrons were already operating from the HMS ILLUSTRIOUS way back in Dec '43.

Does this simply mean that, although squadrons on the Illustrious were equiped with Corsairs, they just didn't see any combat operations from Dec '43. Or is the info on the first use being April '44 a big lie? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

That page is pretty good, giving numbers of planes in service, but it doesn't realy detail the operations the Corsairs were used in...

Um, why call the Tirpitz a "super" battleship? It was an early war design with insufficient AAA, poor compartmentalization, overly complex systems, and severe vulnerabilites in the steering gear and screws.

Every source I found so far says the first combat use was April 6, 1944.
