Finally got photodump working.
Here's most of Eastern Island. The pencil additions are based on my photo analysis of imagery at NARA, dated Oct 41 and a 1943 (IIRC)shot.
I only imposed the buildings seen on the 43 shot that showed up on the Oct 41 photomosaic.
Lining the runways are berms made of piled-up sand. The a/c were parked in these protective revetments. BTW, I used to be a DIA imagery analyst, if there's an accuracy question. I viewed blueprints of most of the buildings at NARA and made copius notes. I will try to scan in my notes, and maybe annotate a copy of this map to give more detail.

Here's the west end of Eastern, with the legend. these maps were USMC maps from USMC Museum at the Navy Yard in Wash,DC.They show most of the major building construction and major gun positions by the 6th DB (Reinf.) I was able to determine almost all of the secondary gun positions (20mm and 37mm) and probable locations for the .50 and .30cal MGs.
On Sand Island the MG positions were marked.
REALLY, these are one of a kind maps and will enable a level of realism unprecedented in a Sim. Questions?

Here's a link to a picture of an SB2U Vindicator leaving its revetment during the battle.

I have problems with one of the oral accounts that seem to indicate a runway on Sand Is. during the battle, though. The later Sand R/W wasn't added until after the battle (based on viewing the JP combat photos of the island). I think the writer confused the narrative.

A NARA pict of B-17s operating from Eastern Island during the battle. Looking at he photo, I believe the main admin area is visible at the right center. The point of the camera would probably be standing just off the runway near the #3 on Runway three in the map looking west. That puts the admin area to the right and some of the bunkers and revetments of the center of the airfield left of the nearer b-17. Note that the runway is probably concrete, and note the tents lining the front of the admin area.

As long as you're doing what you like, that's all that counts right? Besides, you could always bug Oleg 'til he put you in as a pilot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . (Be my luck I'd look like my dl pic, very bad hair day & then some)

Found this photo on-line. It's from 1944, though. Comparing it to the Oct 41 photo-mosaic at NARA, I can say that the bottom area below the runways is MUCH more developed than it was in June 1942. HOWEVER, this gives a rough idea of the revetments (look at the planes in them!), runway paving, and infrastructure at the administrative area.

With tree intersecting runways we hard in need of a Ground-controller that can say more then "no1 your cleared for landin" or "there is traffic on the runway"

Anyway we need LSO on carriers too!
