View Full Version : Do bombers in this sim burn? (Test, lotsa scrshots - 56k beware)

You bet they do!!

Recent debates about how skewed general DM is, made me perform the test: I tried to set the planes below on fire. I didn't want to cause a fatal structural failure, nor to kill the crew, nor to hit the engines. My goal was to set the plane on fire by shooting their gas tanks in the wings (not fuselage). I wanted to find out where do particular planes have fuel tanks modelled and how hard it is to set them aflame. I included many screenshots and comments to share my findings (especially where in the wings the fuel tanks are).

I was flying a Ki-43-Ia with unlimited ammo, my targets were friendly, default weapons, 100% fuel (to make sure all tanks are full). I pick a plane with light armament specifically because with light MGs you are unlikely to cause a structural collapse, while setting a plane on fire isn't that hard.

The procedure was as follows:

I approached directly from astern and closed on target as much as I could:

and shoot a very accurate burst at a desired spot. I avoided hitting engines/fuselage.

To cover the basics: In case one aims for a spot with fuel tank, immediately after first bullets hit, a barely visible fuel leak starts:

Such 'white' leak quickly stops if plane has self sealing tanks. If same spot is hit again (or with larger calibre gun), it evolves into a 'brown' fuel leak, which does never stop, and drains your fuel in a matter of minutes even when at 100%:

By hitting the same place even more, you cause this fuel leak to evolve into a 'black' one:

which really is a timebomb, as sooner or later it will 'upgrade' into a fire. Here we can see that happen on left inner tank of this Blenheim MkIV:

interestingly, Blenheim MkI does not have outer tanks:

Both blenheims burn like a torch after a few well placed 7.7mm rounds.

Mossie MkVI: very easy to burn:

German planes

Ju87: very easy to burn, all versions have the same results:

Ju88: a bit harder to set aflame than stuka, still nothing special:

He111: Now this was a shock. The thing is almost impossible to set on fire. White fuel leak starts immediately, but you have to pour into this beast hundreds of bullets to start the fire. On the screenshot below only port tanks are burning, because there was no time to burn the starboard side too - plane explodes far earlier:

Fuel tanks are modelled in both wingroots, however only starboard one burns. If you shoot the left one, it will start to leak, but the right one will catch fire:

Japanese bombers: Val, very easy to set on fire:

Kate also, seems like it has 2 separate fuel tanks in each wing, close to each other:

B6N burns even easier than Kate, she also has two fuel tanks in each wing as can be seen here:

Betty, burns after a well placed burst, harder than Val/Kate:

Ki-21, another shock. First of all, it only has fuel tanks inner of engines. Secondly, you have to pound them hard to start the 'black' smoke. You have to wait for the fire another few minutes. A very tough plane to set on fire:

Soviet bombers:

Pe-2, series 1: burns relatively easily:

as does Tu-2, although it looks like it does not have starboard inner tank modelled:

US bombers:

A20: Both versions burn relatively easy:

B25 also, but has only 2 fueltanks, so harder to hit:

B17: It's not particularly hard to start a black smoke, especially from the outter two tanks, but you have to struggle to set it on fire with light mgs:

Same story with B24 (which has a bit different fuel tank layout compared to B17 - no tank between the engines):

That's it for starters. All tracks are available via mail (or if somebody recomends a good sharing server, I can upload them). I also found quite some oddities, dare I say bugs, which will follow. The biggest shock for me being B25 WAY easier to set on fire than Ki-21.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You've got me itching to try this myself!

Great post!

Some bugs on this matter (mossie, B17, B24) posted in ORR (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63110913/m/6921089425).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Should have used an MK-108. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
