How did you hear about IL2?

I mean how did you learn about it?

What made you buy it?

Why I ask! Why?

I was playing MS Fighter Ace 2 when one of my squad mates told me about it. He is a real pilot and talked about the great flight model a lot. He said they have German and Russian planes to fly. That did it for me.

MS sold FA2 to VR1, its now called FA3.Unfortunately the squad does not play IL2. There a good bunch /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif the "USMC Leathnecks".

When Oleg started posting at BombsAway (B17II), ZG77 was starting to look for a new flightsim, and B17II looked like it (at the time). Then they cut multiplayer, and Oleg was looking for community support, technical sources, game input and other general assistance, it took about 2 seconds to realize what a great developer this guy was. At the time, Il-2 sounded Way to good to be true (and everybody said so). Rest is history, Oleg delivered, bigtime.

I read it in a review that it was good and thought, it might be. It was.

I stupidly slightly put off getting it by it being about the eastern theatre and wanted to fly spitfires and things over england...

...but its very good and sort of tells an untold story.

I logged on to HL to fly Jane's F18 about a year ago and found the lobby almost empty. So I asked what was up and someone said "Everyone's playing IL-2 now." and I thought, "hmmm... WWII? Nah, not for me thanx."

Then, about 2 weeks later someone showed me a screenshot from in-game (it was still demo) and pointed me to a few previews and I was sold. I downloaded the demo and goofed around for a bit while waiting for the full release. Bought it in December and never looked back.

Always loved Il-2 Sturmovik, had a model when I was a kid, played flight sims on and off since mid 80s, somewhere in early 2000, while browsing the web I found out that where is this Russian guy who's trying to make an Il-2 sim, and followed the development ever since...

One of my squadmates from my WW2OL squad was making posts in our forum about it.I think he bought IL-2 the day it was released. He was one of our full time Luftwaffe pilots and heavily into flying.Youd hardly ever see this guy on the ground with the rest of us in tanks or on foot.
Anyway he started posting about IL-2 and how incredible it was.
At the time I wasnt a big fan of flying.I was just using my joypad to fly the 109,Stuka and 110 once in a blue moon in WW2OL and didn't really enjoy it all that much.and mainly played as a Panzer
But he sold me on IL-2 with his posts praising it so much so I decided to go all out and get myself an X45 and IL-2.
Best decision I ever made.
In all honesty I was never a flight sim player until I bought IL-2.Now Im both hooked and spoiled lol.
When I fly in WW2OL now I'm contantly haunted by the fact that the flight model sucks so bad and the planes look so lame.IL-2 has spoiled me for sure/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

actually the 1.70 patch went live last night .The one that adds like 5 new Allied vehicles and the new "improved" vegitation. They replaced all the trees grass and bushes with "photo relistic" ones.Great idea everything looks great now.Just dont try and scan past a big clump of the new tall grass or your frames drop from 30 fps to 7 in 1.1 secs.
To answer you question.Basicly the same lol

I saw it in PC game magazine preview. Whoa! that one guy spot very early one that Oleg start talk!

11-10-2002, 08:58 AM
I started to play il-2 in June 2001.

11-10-2002, 09:51 AM
I have been flying sims off and on for a while...I had Microprose F-117 a while back. Got out for a few years. I always wanted to get into it again but was just too busy with life & stuff. After 911 I put some things in perspective and decided to spend more time at home. I got FS2000 & CFS (FS200 because of the Trade Center, CFS because of the P-51 on the box) and dove back into sims with a vengance. I got AH and FA (just demo versions) and a friend gave me F-22 Raptor. I began to look at some of the other sims too including IL2, but never bought any. I found that I preferred WW2 sims....more up close and personal. One day recently while haunting the stores looking to see if CFS3 was released, I walked into best buy where I met a guy looking at the same shelves I was looking at. We talked about sims and games in general and he told me he had 3 and hated it (I think it still wasnt released to all stores yet), he told me about IL2 which I had heard about but never bought, never visited the sight or heard about the demo or anything. Since I couldnt get 3 yet in my area I picked up IL2 on his recomendation, took it home and the rest is history. I found out what he was comparing 3 to and understood where he was coming from. I stayed away from it because it was only Russian & German planes. HA!!! I could have been enjoying this game a long time ago. It is the best $29 bucks I ever spent and now I find myself flying it more than anything else. The only reason I go to CFS now is to be with my squad m8s, otherwise I would only fly IL2. It's so good to see a product of such high quality with developers who actually care about the people who buy it. ~!S!~ to Oleg and crew and all the rest of you guys , my newfound wingmates and adversaries. In the 10 days since I have been flying this sim..(I have a hard time calling it a game anymore, the term doesnt do it justice) I have discovered more about it and can see where all the raves come from. Pound for pound, taking the whole package into consideration it is THE BEST combat sim ever BAR NONE. I cant imagine anything BETTER out there, maybe almost just as good but not better....if there is let me know......;D

11-10-2002, 10:54 AM
I read the preview in a Russian games magazine, and then got the demo.

11-10-2002, 11:44 AM
Read the game was being developed on the internet more than a year ago (it was way pre-demo). I downloaded the demo when it got released, got hooked (does anyone remember that great mission in the demo in which you as the lead of a flight of IL2's attack that airfield?) and never stopped playing really...got IL2 the day it got released just like I got the demo the day it was released. At the moment I'm just hooked to two games; Operation Flashpoint (Resistance) and IL2. For OFP the story is the same really, read a preview on a site way before the demo got released, then downloaded the demo and got the game the day it was released. I play IL2 more though.

11-10-2002, 12:12 PM
I read about the development of Il-2 on www.Gamespot.com (http://www.Gamespot.com) in late 2000 I think, and was blown away by the screenshots, in particular one close-up of a Ju-88 cockpit.

Late 2001 I saw a computing mag in Denmark with the Il-2 demo on a cd. When I fired it up on my brothers computer I just couldn't believe the graphics or flight modelling, sheer perfection compared to any earlier Sim experience (Chuck Yeagers Air Combat, European Air War).

Yes, the Il-2 mission were you attack an airfield rally impressed me too. Espcially that I augured in on the first 10 tries of taking off with the bombload and all. Made it feel like a real accomplishment just to coax the bugger into the air!

I was on a break from work...looking through shops and thats where love at first site happened! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

But seriously, I was indeen on a break, and I was browsing the shops. I saw IL-2 and since I really love flight sims I of course took it...had a look at the PC specs required (I always do that first as to me that is what tells me if the sim is made good...the higher, the better sim).

I was very happy to buy it...and when I got home, installed it...and...well:

...and they lived happyly ever after! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Much earlier than the demo release /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I had been a MS CFS fan from release of CFS1, pre-ordered IL2 when release was announced haven't looked back since. Got my first PC in January 2002 and decided I needed a flight sim. Was about to buy FS2002 but saw a review of IL2 in PC Gameplay, Bought it and became hooked. The dilemma now is, should I be planning to buy FB or Lock On (or both)?

11-10-2002, 02:54 PM
I had been off gaming for some time. Mostly because I had other priorities and my very old PC could not handle less than antique games anyway. About a year ago, my PC died (of old age).

So I replaced it by a state of the art rig. Had to. Well, okay, I wanted to pick up flight simming again! I wanted to try a few sims and other games I had missed, and be ready when LOMAC went out.

That's when I heard that a Russian guy was about to release an eastern front sim. Original theme, plus non-arcade flight models, an irresistible combination! I bought it.

Needless to say, after that I never found the time to play those old games.

That was also the time when I choosed my nickname "Dora-9",
because I hoped so strong, that somebody will model a D-9
with a real FM in a combat flight sim.

The chances are not bad, that my wish will become true after
years of waiting with the FB "Add-On".

And then I will change my nickname.

But until then .....

I found IL2 in a very strange way.

I'd happily been playing Janes WWII Fighters and RB 3D on my old 466 cellery system with 2 12 meg vodoo2 cards around this time last year.

One day near Christmas I happened to be in Toy's R Us doing some shopping for the kids when I saw the IL2 box. It caught my interest so I came home and checked it out on the net. All the reviews I read raved about it so I bought a copy and loaded it up.

Needless to say, it ran like cr@p on my old system, but I could still tell that the graphics were amazing.

After some nifty budgeting I managed to upgrade my system in the new year and have been hooked ever since. Ubi's support has been amazing and online play added a whole new dimension I hadn't experienced before.

Now I'm anxiously awaiting FB!

11-10-2002, 03:39 PM
I started gaming with Flightmare, and the sidescrolling Redbaron back in the 8086 days, and I've been more or less hooked on flying games and flight sims ever since. I think it reached it peak around Aces of the Pacific. After that, there didn't seem to be any good ones to play.

Janes USNF was good, as was Jane's Anthology, but they were back before 3D cards were out. Janes WWII fighters was fun for a little while, but I never really got into it. Same for Redbarron II, CFS2, F15, and a host of other flight sims that I'd tried out. Even the space flying games were getting thin. X-Wing Alliance was good, but it didn't have the fire of the previous X-Wing games. The Freespace line was terrific, but then FS3 was unexpectedly cancled (the franchise got sold, but the dev team didn't). In fact the biggest reason I was looking forward to Tribes II was the flying vehicles. I think most of us know how that turned out.

Basically I was in a flightsim lul. I hadn't played a good WWII sim since Aces of the Pacific, and I really hadn't enjoyed any fight sim since Jane's Anthology. I had remembered reading that Flanker was good, and I've always been facinated by Russian aircraft, so I decided to see if I could go dig it up. (Note: this was Summer 2001, and I was looking for Flanker 1.0. That shows you what sort of a lul I was in.)

I finally did manage to dig it up. It was up to 2.5, and was so old that nobody sold it any more. I asked around on the boards to see if anyone knew where to find a copy, and somebody told me that the Flanker team was now working on a game called Lock-On: Modern Air Combat, and that it should be out soon. So, I headed on over to their forums, and waited.

One day I noticed a link in their More Games tab, called Il-2 Sturmovik. I clicked, I downloaded the demo, I was hooked.

I only got my PC a couple of months ago, but remembered a
review I read from last year. Since I always had a thing for WWII planes and had IL-2 models as a kid, it was the logical choice over any of the CFS. And what can I say,
even though I can't play it properly yet (joystick will
arrive on Monday-at last/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ), it's the best 20.00 I've spent in loooong time.

11-10-2002, 04:03 PM
Read from a magazine an article about an upcoming ww2 flight sim set on the eastern front. After the review, I decided to get it.

11-10-2002, 04:23 PM
was playing the free beta of WBIII and read about IL2 on forums, was totally blown away by the demo, the rest is history.

11-10-2002, 05:02 PM
Actually, I heard about IL-2 a long time ago, but I have just now dowloaded the demo. I wasn't interested in IL-2 for two reasons: 1- the aircraft....no Spit, no Thunderbolt, no F6F, no Corsair, no Tempest, no Typhoon. I don't like flying for the bad guys, so the German and Russian planes held no attraction for me. 2:- the Eastern front....I wanted to fly over the Battle of the Bulge, and in the Pacific Theater. I don't know why, but that's what I wanted. Now that I own CFS1, 2 and 3, I have seen the error of my ways. They're OK games, but that's all, just OK. IL-2 is a cut above, even without attractive (in my opinion) planes or theater. I'm a convert. I've ordered IL-2 and I'll be first in line for FB.

Never keep a dog, then bark yourself.

11-10-2002, 05:30 PM
I have recounted this before, but here goes.

I had given up on flight sims after the very disappointing CFS2. I figured that if M$ could not make a convincing sim no one could. (What a n00b!!) Then, on Dec. 29th of last year I was walking down the software isle at WalMart and saw a picture of an IL2 on a box cover. Am I glad I decided to buy IL2.

Be Sure!!!!!!

I´ve been into the flight sims from the very old F119 Stealth Fighter and Red Baron. A while ago I´ve been talking to a friend how nice it would be to have a sim for the Eastern front and why nobody does this. When Il-2 came out I got the copy from a friend, try it for a day... and then went to the store and bought my own copy. Good games deserve it, or should I rather say their authors do. I think that Il-2 is very cool, bu oon the other hand I prefer playable realism, thoughtfull graphic details (the things that are important to play while neglecting those that are moer or less irrelevant) and interestingly real flight/damage model. FB is definitely going to be on my PC, since I allready have wet dreams about Dora 9, Hurricane, Tempest, etc... Just hope that my lower end copm will swalow it.

Ive been a "hardcore" first person shooter player for about 4 years.

Played Tribes 1/2 way too much, MW 3/4 and the RB6, RS, GR series casually.

Ive owned Falcon4 (Twice, Im a sucker for games with books), and Janes WW2 fighters. Both games lost my attention pretty quick. The learning curve to play these sims was longer than my attention span (keep in mind, I'm a non pilot with little flight sim experience, and was playing leagues/ladders in tribes 1 at the time).

Skip to couple of months ago, and I am getting burnt out on the first person shooter scene. I bought a gamer magazine with the IL2 demo on cd. I had just bought a Geforce TI-500, and was looking for game with eye candy to show off its abilties. I installed the IL2 demo.

OMG, it was spectacular. I was blown away just sitting on the ground looking at my wings with the hat switch. I never did take off in the demo, I could not figure out how to turn on the ground. I tried for about a week then noticed there where some recorded tracks. I played those tracks and was in the car headed to the local software store within an hour.

Having played so much multiplayer in other games, the single player part of any game pretty much is just viewed as a prelude to the online component by me. I messed around with some of the offline part of IL2 for a few weeks then got the nerve up to try my luck online.

Online has been just a continious beat down for me, but I'm getting better. Now im starting to realize that I can learn quite a bit from the offline play, so Ive stepped back from online only to work on some basic skills.

I have not played Tribes (or any of my other fps's) in a month now. Honestly, I cant believe I "wasted" that much gaming time on fps's.

Im hooked bigtime.

i was looking around compUSA and came across this il2 box, i liked flight sims and i HATED CFS and CFS2 cause they graphics were horrible!! and i remembered my friend talkng about it, so before i bought it, i went home and tried the demo, halfway between the downloading process, i saw the screenshot of the mig flying over the german convoy, and it said that was an actual screenshot, didnt even bother playing the demo, went and bought it before it finished downloading, I LOVE the game, but the only thing i dont like is the 2 and 3 second lags a get right before the perfect shot

Dunno exactly when i heard about it.

But it was even before Oleg used to post his friday updates over on the Bluebyte forums. Been following the development with much interest and enthousiasm from early on.

Mainly interested me coz Oleg interacted with the simmers. They would ask for a feature. He would assure them that it was in, or would be in, with pics of IL2 planemodels etc.

Simply had to have the sim because i have been waiting for it with great anticipation ever since its early development.

Saw it on a Warez site and Downloaded it

Just kidding

I had been searching for ages for a decent Combat Flight Sim. Was always searching the net "Google etc".
Downloaded all sorts of sims but nothing quite made the grade and I eventually gave up.
But later, in one of my searches I stumbeld across some screen shots of the IL2 Demo and the Rest is history......

Great question Tailspin. I like reading the replies.

As for my own, here goes.

Ive been a millitary aircraft fanatic for as long as I can remember. Whats more, I have been playing flight sims for literaly decades. When I was in grade school my parents bought a Mac (classic). One of the first programs I wanted to try was an old EA games title (I think) called Chuck Yeager's Advanced Fighter Tactics. It was of course pretty primitive by today's standards, but I thought it kicked arse anyway despite the black and white graphics. I even managed to break the sound barier in a P-51, a feat that I was amazed by at the time (and still brag about now and then).

From then till now I have played or owned almost every computer flight simulation program that has been published in North America. Some were good, some not so good. I am always ammazed at technology's progress over the last 25 years or so. Thinking back to the times of monochomatic displays and the lack of even a sound card brings back some great memories.

About a year and a half ago my computer gaming activities began to decline due to budgetary constraints that led to a lack of upgradability. Unfortunately that was about the time i began to hear about IL2. When it first hit the shelves, I looked at the back of the box and knew that I had to own this program. However, also knew that my outdated machine would choke on the eye-candy. So I didn't even bother to get it at the time. How in the world was my last-generation machine going to get me through these bleak times? After many arguments with my wife (tantrums really) I was resined to the fact that I wouldn't be able to upgrade for quite some time.

About two months ago I picked up the IL2 box at the store again, curious about the min. requirements (I hadn't even checked before). Lo and behold, my PII/400 Mhz clunker was supposed to push it! (sure I felt like a moron, but I was happy!) Now bear in mind that I have a decent video card to add to the performance of my dinosaur (VOODOOO 5 baby!!!), and while it does go into slide show mode from time to time, IL2 still has the best graphics and flight model on the market, not to mention the replayability gained with the mission builder! I love this game and STILL cant wait to upgrade!!!!!! Bravo, Oleg.

P.S. Oleg & crew, or any enterprizing moders out there, bring back my beloved 'Stang and other US, UK aircraft! That would be sweet! I don't care if they weren't in the theater, I just want to fly them.

Heard about it on the Flanker 2 forums.

The Bf 109G6 A/S is truely an uber target drone. Its fuselage is designed to completly break off with just a few hits and its engine is designed to die with a single hit from anything. The control unit (pilot) is also very easy to disable with even the smallest MG's. The speed of the Bf 109G6A/S is low but not so low that it becomes difficult to follow. Its turn and roll rates are at a comfortable level for most trainees and it allows them to gain experience in deflection shooting. The Bf 109G6 A/S is also slow to climb which allows VVS flyers to practice B&Z on it.

I was at the computer store checking out the add-ons for CFS2 and saw the Il2 box. Never saw or heard of it before, but it looked interesting. I thought, what the hell? So, I bought it on the spot and have not played another game since. Been nearly a year now.

Damn glad I didn't opt for Wings Over China.

I have no idea exactly when, but it was back when what we now take for granted as the Great Friday Updates were intermittently sent out to a short email list by Oleg directly.

Getting those emails was amazing, why would a developer personally email info and ask for input from a couple of dozen potential fans?

IL2, at that time, was to be a ONE flyable plane sim and concentrate on ground attack campaigns on the Eastern Front.

I was hooked then, all there was left to do was wait 3 or 4 years till it arrived.

During the wait I had a great time with FS-SDOE, some fun with Janes WWII fighters and EAW, absolutely no fun at all with CFS1 on the Zone, watched B17-2 self destruct when multiplay was ripped out and had an amazing ammount of fun with Aces High.

I was extremely fortunate to get a beta and my input into fixing problems was exactly nil.

Because, on a P3 500 with 192MB RAM and a SBLive Value sound card and a Diamond Viper V770 video card the beta ran better than ANY flightsim I had ever owned.

I never had the sound problems some in beta experienced, no stutters even when I just had to fill every mission with every plane available, looking for that EAW "Filled Sky" sensation.

I am sure there are others here from that far and probably farther back and the point is that Oleg, from the time when there was little knowledge of IL2, has been in direct contact with and listening to those interested in his Simulation.

When the IL2 Beta arrived all other sims became, as great as some of them were, coasters.

Heard about it from a pesky lass who would, I gathered by her more than abundant posts on the CFS forums at the time, lay down her life for this Game of Games. Ya know, for all her brashness and hard headedness, she was correct in one aspect.....IL2 proved to be an excellent flight sim game. It has earned a space on my puter right along with all the rest of the "pokin a hole in the sky" games.

Jeez.. Lemme think.

Probably around 2000-2001 on the SimHQ boards. I remember when the official forums were like the Lomac ones - brown and ugly /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

I recall that during beta testing they'd put out weekly updates.

I also remember Luthier writing a spellbinding account of flying an Il2 on an attack in a blizzard that made me curse the fact I wasn't a beta tester /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I remember all the hubub over the 'unofficial' demo release..

And yes, that Il2 mission in the demo is IMO one of the "funnest" missions ever. I wish I could find somewhere to download it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It's fun to head over to the archives at SimHQ and check out the threads posted on the day it was released to see everyone's reactions /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

First heard about first on Janes WWII Fighters website.

Could not believe the screenshots. Followed it's development on several sites.

I almost jumped for joy when I saw the box on the shelf at Media Play.

I'm so dedicated I've been playing on a celery 466!

Soon I will be flying on a 2.53 or faster machine and I cannot freaking wait.

Well, I bought a games magazine, read the preview and let my dad also read the preview, after that, he waited and bought the game for me (and him of course!) the day it came out in the stores. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Nowadays, he still is playing with the stock version and hasn't installed any patches. He constantly plays single missions with the 109 and 190. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I 1st read about it on a Crismon skies forun, then same Cs buddies told demo was out and we tried it. But on that time we where not able to play it online so I quit it. On last day of 2001 I watched a documentary about Women as pilots on 2nd ww. Next day I discover that they are lanching Il2 in my country so I got it. Lucky for Me/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

S! all, I started playing RB3D when a friend at work told me about it. I joined <PF> and flew a couple wars with them and someone mentioned IL2 was coming out soon. I DL'ed Demo and saw my Compaq just wasn't going to cut it. So, I took 500 of my tax return and decided to build my own system just to run my new "addiction" (so my wife calls it). <PF> started an IL2 wing and the rest is history!

Long live IL2!

11-11-2002, 05:55 PM
I had been flying CFS1 and 2. Read a reveiw of the Pre-release demo of IL2 Sturmovik in Flight Journal that said it was a revolution in combat flight sims. They were right. Hope this info. helps them market IL2 and FB better. They deserve to be on every simmer's hardrive.

11-11-2002, 06:16 PM
I didn't.

One day last December, my roommate came home with this little gem. The rest is history.

I have thanked him many times since as I would've likely missed out on a masterpiece.

11-11-2002, 06:26 PM
Same here m8, heard through 2.5 and during upgrade to 3.0 FA I kept hearing about IL2. Have the game now, and wow...seems to be a blend of WW2, CFS, EAW and just plain better then all.

11-11-2002, 06:44 PM
I was browsing dogfighter.com for news on flight sims, and read about IL2 and I figured it was one of those posh simulators that had impossible minimum requirements (which it did) and I was so used to not being able to play newer games in my crappy old computer... only this time I had a job... hehehe /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

So I started to follow this forum... well it was a blue byte forum at the time, I don't post much though. Then the IL2 site was created, forum moved over here, then the demo leaked, then the official demo came out, then the game itself came out and I bought it, then the updates came out... the BlitzPigs came out... the eurotrolls came out... the rest is history... good year and a half all together...

At the Delphi Flight Sim newsgroup the IL2 Demo was highly regarded so I bought it. I used to play CFS2 a bunch then but no longer. I would do so if Microsoft would fix the collision bug that they refuse to acknowledge. Wish Oleg would do a Pacific Air war 2 just to slap Microsofts face directly.

11-11-2002, 09:49 PM
I flew CFS1 for a while after it came out, but always promised myself the BEST flight simulator available was going to be part of the package when I got a modern fast PC.

Last december just before christmas my old pII 266 blew up and went to pc heaven and I looked for the best PROP flight sim in the world for my new speed-beast PC. IL-2 was getting rave reviews on the internet and then I saw the box in the shops and just fell in love with that battered grey hulk in the snowstorm. I had to get this sim! BUT it was in Dutch in the shops - I live in Holland - but I really didn't want a Dutch language game. Dutch language software really, REALLY sucks when Dutch isn't yer mother tongue.

SO I played the demo off the net and hunted in the shops but all the copies I found were 'localised'. Eventually (after about a week of playing the demo almost non-stop) I gave in, I had to have the full game. Imagine how happy I was to find the game itself in English! Only the - almost illegible - manual was in Dutch. Way to go UbiSoft - next time lets have some English language versions of Forgotten Battles in Dutch shops for the thousands of foreigner simmers living here PLEASE!

11-11-2002, 10:16 PM
I saw it sitting on the shelf and picked it up to look at the screen shots. The shot of vehicles being destroyed on a road is what sold me on the game. If the game had just been focused on airial combat without any ground combat, I doubt I would have purchased it.

11-11-2002, 10:19 PM
Found a avaition magazine in the john one day
at work and saw the add. I went out that day
and bought it.

And to think my wife says I don't get anything
accomplished in the john when you sit there with
a magazine.

i was on at best buy about to get CFS2 a couple months ago, then i saw IL2 with small box version and its says the best classical flight sims and alot of well known games site voted it as the best flight sim on it box, i honestly never knew so many games site voted on single game like that.
i got IL2 instead of CFS2.and im glad i choose IL2 over CFS2..anyway it was same price as CFS.

I first heard about it from www.flightsim.com, (http://www.flightsim.com,) when the demo was leaked (but didn't bother to read teh review) then a gaming type web site that raved about its nice graphics when I was looking to upgrade my video card. But for some reason that I can not explain, I never even tried the demo (perhaps because I was on 56K at the time). I was not really into "games" or aircombat, I flew Jeppesen's Sim, X-plane, Microsoft FS series, and had taken a small liking to CFS1 and 2 and Jane's F-15 when I was in the mood for combat, but found the overall experiance too "game-like" to be something I would give much time.

Then I went to SimHQ to check out some of Andy's articles and I stumbled across a review of this little known (to me) developer's WWII sim. It sounded like something more than what I had come to expect from a 39.99 combat sim, so I gave it a try. I was bummed out about the dihedral modeling, and at the lack of atmospheric controls, and some rudimentary aircraft controls (i.e. engine management), and that the virtual cockpits intrumentation was placed where I couldn't read them without moving the mouse around, but the first time I got into a spin I was astounded at what I was seeing! I actually said aloud "holy S***!!! A spin that actually feels like a spin!!!!" I then tried a snap roll, then knife edge flight, then a hammerhead, then a torque roll, then a tailslide, then a forward slip, then a crosswind landing. . .each time followed by the requisite outburst of holy S***!!

And the rest is history!

S! Oleg, and thanks for the best physics I have used in any sim (including what the FAA calls Flight Simulators, full mostion, full cockpit mockups)

Tailslides stopped acting normally after 1.04, and it would be nice to see that dihedral modelling reworked, but I am gonna buy FB either way!

I was planning to buy Jane's Attack Squadron but didn't have the money yet. I was at wal-mart one day( looking for Attack Squadron) and Il-2 caught my eye(I had never heard of it before this) so I later I looked up reviews of both games on the internet and saw that Il-2 was clearly the better game. I got it a couple weeks later.

I use to play CFS2 all the time then my friend who is big fan of WWII games, made me download the IL2 Demo and I was hooked. IL2 attracts alot of people by word of mouth wouldn't all of you agree?

I´m a lucky sonofa*itch. One day I just thought that I should buy a fightersim ,because I had never played one. Picked up IL2...went home...fell in love. I have tried a couple of other similar games but nothing else does it for me.

Heard about it on gamespot.com. Now I'm hooked. This was and still is my first flight sim. And the next? Of course, it's got to be FB!

I was out Christmas shopping with the wife last December when I stopped in an Electonic's Boutique. I saw IL2 on the new release shelf. Being a Real Life pilot and I have been playing flight simulators since 'Hellcat Ace' on the Commodore 64, I bought it. I haven't played another game since. Absoulutly the best.

I download a lot of demos from PCgameworld.com to see whats worth buying. I had never heard of this game before downloading the demo and was totally suprised by it. This is the first game I have loved in which I totally suck at!!! I think I have about 3 online kills since I bought it the day it came out! lol. The funniest part is that I built a computer for my cousin in return for a Saitek Cyboorg 3d Gold joystick, my old one wasnt cutting it!

I played many sims:
- MS Flight Sim (TRS-80)
- Their Finest Hour
- Aces Over the Pacific
- Aces Over Europe
- SWOTL (Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe)
- Red Baron

SWOTL was the one I had the most fun. It wasn't until I played X-Wing, TIE-Fighter, and the other Star Wars Sims that I started having fun with simulators again. When CFS came out I thought it would fill my void for a WW2 Flight Sim, but it did not. I tried SDOE, EAW, WB, AW, AH, etc... and all were good on their own, but nothing really appealed to me. When CFS2 came out I gave the whole thing another try, and again... it was allright. In the meantime I tried B-17II, Battle of Britain, and Luftwaffe Commander, all with mixed/negative results, although LC was fairly novel, with unusual aircraft, and the Spanish Civil War.

Of all sims, the only one that really felt like a good product overall was Jane's WW2 Fighters. Great graphics, and even though the flight modelling was not so accurate, wow it was enjoyable... If I could only have something that fun and more realistic, it would be great. Unfortunately, there were no WW2F addons. Crimson Skies was also a novel idea, and all in all a good simulator... but science fiction is a whole different story.

I was reading a PC games magazine, and I saw an early preview of several flight simulators that were on the works. One of them was IL-2 Sturmovik. I forgot about it for about 3-6 months, until I read the magazine again and decided to do a search in the Internet. Then the rest is History. I communicated with Oleg and the guys of Blue Byte and they all seemed like great people. Oleg told me perhaps I could work on making some supporting applications, etc... UbiSoft then acquired Blue Byte, and by default, publishing IL-2. Then I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Beta. Since then I have turned into a complete IL-2 biggot...

I bought Jane's Attack Squadron, which I am not sure why it was released, and recently I just bought CFS3. Although it has some really "cool" features, it simply does not meet the same feeling I get with IL-2.

That's about it.

Heard about it long ago from WWIIOL squaddie. Bought it, but wasn't ready for realistic sim at the time. Then in late summer my internet connection was acting up. I couldnt get a decent connection to WWIIOL server, so I tried IL-2 (online of course). Found some servers that had excellent ping, ping was always consistintly excellent, and built off that.

Now I await FB. Coop are the only fun I have for now until I find a squadron (FB will determine, dunno if I want the P-47 or the FW-190, prolly 190).

I had just typed a (heated response) to an "MS apologist" on the CFS2 zone. While others were venting about the CFS3 money grab, this guy kept saying "CFS3 is wonderful." Then someone typed "I'm going back to Forgotten Battles now" and he promptly logged off.

A few Google searches for reviews showed a very high approval rating for FB among hard core flight sim enthusiasts so it didn't take long to get one out of the box. At first I didn't like it because it was unfamiliar but after a few hours it grabbed me ... and later it grabbed a few of my buddies. One of them is a Greek professor lol.

Have spent many happy hours flying a Cessna 172 on floats around British Columbia decades ago. This sim has brought back some of those old feelings. It's not just a game and it's not just a combat sim. It's a work of art that ranks with the best works produced by great Russian artists of the past.

Thanks Oleg and 1C team for this great product. It's worth every cent!

I was looking for a new flight sim to play, and was checking out Flanker 2.0, when I got routed to the LO:MAC homepage. The LO:MAC page had a link on it to a game called Il-2. I thought Russian aircraft? WWII? Cool. (My dad has an old set of pocket WWII aircraft encyclopedias, that had the Il-2, the La-5FN, and the Pe-8 in them, and I've always wanted to fly those aircraft in a sim.)

I went to the site, downloaded the Alpha release and tried to run it on my Celeron 400, and was treated to a marvelous still of my aircraft burning on the runway, as the rest of my flight went trundling through the wreakage, and breaking into peices. Despite the fact I couldn't get more than five FPS on that machine, I was hooked. Eventually I managed to get my computer upgraded enough to play it, and life has been good. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I saw the review of IL2 in pc gamer. Tryed the demo of IL2 once, thought it was ok, but didnt get the game. Continued playing CFS 2 (b/c of my love of the pacific theatre and my distaste for the Eastern front). Then I went and got CFS3 the day it came out. After a couple days of playing, I got ticked at it and tryed the demo to IL2 again and found myself playing and enjoying the IL2 demo more then CFS 3 (Dam you MS) so then I went out and bought IL2:FB and vowed to buy every Oleg product (as long as the quality stays) and never another MS flight sim. I love IL2, I have more fun playing it then I do Falcon 4 (b/c of the online play).

I was working in a PC-game store and hear about this game long befor it was released. Was a fan right from the start.
Bought this game immediately when it was released, but I had to stay in EAW because of my slow PC for about a year

i would get a computer gaming magazine in the mail. The advertising for IL2 was very good in it. I just now got FB but i wanted to get the first release as soon as i saw it in that magazine. I build model airplanes, soviet lately, and i'm a Russian history buff. Kithobbyist is one of my fav websites and they just added an IL-2 section. Thank you to everyone interested in this "unknown and forgotten" part of the war.

My first flight sim was Janes WWII Fighters. I had just got a computer and loved the graphics and flight model. However, it really didn't keep me interested. I tried Half-Life next and fell in love with it. But after a while....I lost interest. Did some racing, Interstate 76, Carmaggeddon 2, NFS III Hot Pursuit & Porsche Unleashed, Dirt Track Racing and a couple of NASCAR titles. (I still go back to them now and again.) Kept looking for a good flight sim with action. I had no real interest in X-Plane or M$ Flight Simulators. Then I found European Air War. I loved the Battle of Britain scenerio and played it over and over and over and over......! Then CFS2 came along. My interest in that waned after I got over the graphics (good for their time) and I learned to land on an aircraft carrier. I continued to replay the EAW Battle of Britain until I stumbled upon the IL-2 Demo at some website, (can't remember now), and loved the airfield attack. It tok me several trys to win the battle and that was from the flying start. It took me two weeks to learn how to properly take off the overladen IL-2. After that I tried each plane and when that was done I started over. with the mini QMB supplied I played that and the 2nd version of the demo for over a year! I finally got IL-2 and now FB. I haven't played another game since I bought IL-2. It is, currently, the best flight sim ever! I'm hoping that somehow we get a BoB add-on/expansion game and would love to see a Flying Tigers add-on/expansion.
But even if not another thing gets released for IL-2/FB, it has set a very high benchmark indeed. It will take a game of equal ingenuity and quality to get my buck!

At the time when il2 came we were 31 or 32 (we are not sure ) and our father in law had just turned 70. One day he called and said we'd better get our a$$ there immediatly ...so we went. He had his computer on and on the runway... a Bf 109 ...he smiled and said " why dont you take her up for a spinn?". We went eagerly and headed down the runway and......CRASHED as it "shwung" off in to the field. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

A bf 109 that is difficult to take off? (great, fantastic)

and when we saw the landscape from the air for the first time we think we cried with joy.
There were so many new and wonderfull things. for example there was planes never featured in any sim we heard of and AI was fantastic compared with the sims we tried earlier.

we were happy ( snoorrt)

I heard about it in cfs2 when all the il2sturmo people would come to the msn gaming zone and bash cfs2 telling everyone to buy il2, i downloaded the demo and didnt like it much, and really didnt care much for the eastern theater but i have come to enjoy it.

I wound up liking il2 sturmo alot, the realistic gunnery. cfs2 had alot more people flying then il2 sturmo at the time but I was sick of the cheats in cfs2 one of the reasons I left and been a il2 fan ever since

Well, why not tell you. My band-mate had just got a pc, and was playing CFS when it was hot. (remember that?) I played it on his machine, and he kept laughing at me for "flying upside down". It didn't really seem to matter. It really didn't feel at all like flying. After I got my first PC, I tried WWII Fighters, and well, THAT felt like flying. I played that alot. Later, I started playing CFS2 and joined the Aces High Squadron. Still a good bunch! I left them to take a wing in my best bud's squad back in cfs, and was fine there until . . .

It was on the shelf. "Simulation Game Of The Year", it said. I bought it, but it wouldn't run on my old machine. I tried EVERYTHING, but finally had to take it back. I could see that this thing was what I had to have, though! When I finally aquired a decent machine, I dl'd the demo to see if I could run it. Yahoo!!! It worked! The graphics had to be set a bit low, but it was now worth playing. Three video cards later, and still as amazed as the first day that I saw the video trailer in the department store.

I think (sorry the braincells aren't what they used to be) that I read a preview in a computer magazine for IL2.Wasn't really all that interested TBH and waited until the price had come down before buying it.The game kept crashing and it got shelved for a long while until December 2002.
I was having problem with another game and I traced it back to faulty graphic card drivers and updated them.At the time I was heavily into CFS 2 and the excellent 1% aircraft where support for CFS 2 was lagging and was beginning to switch to CFS 3 at the 1% aircraft site.So I decided to reinstall IL2 and haven't looked back since.

I didn't answer before, so I will now. I saw an article on gamespot or IGN and read it, then downloaded the demo over night on my dialup. Played the demo for a good while. I bought IL2 in May of 2002, mainly because of the ground attacks in the IL2. Actually, I though that IL2 was mostly ground based attacks until I had bought the game. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I never flew sims at all, tried the demo, it was bad experience - all raining and stuff, couldn't see anything http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A friend told me later to ignore the demo and try the game. Tried to play the demo online, wouldn't work with my router.

I was very leary of buying it, but I did and haven't quit playing it since.

A friend had a demo copy on a CD from a PC gamer magazine. One of my 2002 Christmas presents was a new computer. My friend loaned me about one dozen CDs from the magazine with all of these demos on them. I wanted to try a flight sim and loaded IL-2. I returned the rest of the CDs without loading a single other demo. We both bought IL-2 shortly after that. We also both bought FB as soon as it came out. Looking forward to the add-ons even if I have to pay for them.

I noticed it and i downloaded it off the web hahahahahaha /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

No serious i saw the original testing article in a mag for the 1st one in WH Smiths Newsagents, so bought it straight off, then spent 2 grand (UK) on a new PC to run it ok....bought FB from Canada pre UK release and forgot had ordered a UK one too....(Better packaging by half, note that UBI, your Canadian box is not up to it, the UK DVD case is better.)

Gave the Spare one away online in IL2 Original to someone that couldnt afford to buy it, heck i even paid the postage /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Suppose it has a future too as i can envisage parts of the coding being done for Battlefield Command RTS (or WW2 RTS dependant on the flavour of the month name wise) using the same basic engine. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

NOW If you could combine the 2 like Silent Hunter 2 and Destroyer Command would that be breath taking and an awesome online experiance, but i suppose the fact it is no longer in UBi's Stable won't ever see that dream come to friution. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

the thread may be old - but 'tis a good question

got a pc around christmas '02
borrowed a few sims of my brother namely IL2,EAW and B17 something or other.

i put EAW in the drive first and played it for ages - meanwhile my bro took IL2 back. i carried on with EAW even though he said IL2 was better - mainly cause it had typhoons and spits in it.

a few months later i found a demo of IL2 in a PC mag - in fact is was the DEMO 2. and instantly fell in love with it

i never bought IL2 just went and nicked it off my bro.

when FB came out i tried to not by it until my finals were over - but i crumbled and just had to rush my money off to Oleg & co /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Was browsing through the shelves at the local store and saw the box but I didn't like the look of it. A few weeks later it was still there so I thought I would give it try as I was getting a bit bored with CFS.

The rest as they say is history, and is about the only game I play every day. Even the consoles have been gathering dust....

I read about it in a PC sim magazine, it was there that I found out that there were more flyables than just the IL2. I have never been much of a ground pounder and I had never bought a WW2 flightsim. But I thought I would give prop dogfights a chance. 10 minutes later I bought the game, and I'm glad I did./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif First plane I flew,,, the Fw 190A-4 on a wintermap! Saw an article in a gaming magazine waaaaaay before Il2 was released. I knew then I had to have it......it was quite a wait, but it gave me time to buy a decent PC, internet connection and a graphics card with some poke. Il2/FB is my first consideration when upgrading anything - does that make me a sad git?

I had given up on prop sims after the truely awful CFS2.

I had no intention of EVER trying another flight sim, thanks to the boys at Microsoft. Then I was walking down the isle at Wal Mart looking for a FPS and saw an IL2 on the cover of the box...

That was January 30 after the release...a date which will live in infamy in my girlfriends mind!!!!

Don't recall...Wait it could've been gamespot or one of the other gaming review sites that I frequent.

I just happened to see it in a store, and thought "wow, an eastern fron't simulator, that's different." I was leary at first, being affraid that it wouldn't be as good as Jane's WWII Fighters, but I bought it anyway. After one week of play I gave Jane's away to my now brother-in-law, and I've been flying in the East ever since.

Like ZG77 ran into Oleg on another sim forum and we got 'talkin' and when he found his Dad and I were the same age, he invited me to beta test the original IL2...jumped at the chance and haven't looked back since..just keep enjoying whatever he puts out more each time. Missed out on the beta of FB dammit.:-) Its been some darn learning curve!!!....Jag

Was waiting for IL2 for some time. Seen people chat'n bout it on CFS2 back in the day. Was tired of all the reworked air files (MOD'S) the people were fly'n. IL2 got here left CFS2 and never look't back.

Thanx Oleg. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Read about it in PC Zone a long time ago. Tried the demo (the first one) and played that for a few weeks (took some time to learn how to take off in the P39 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ). Bought IL2 as soon as it came out in the UK, although I've been visiting these boards since before then. Such devotion. S!

The Eastern front was new and different, so it was a no-brainer.

I haven't looked back.

i was always interested in flight sims and got all excited when i found a demo on a gaming mag cd. unfortunately my pc wasnt up to the task at that time.
so i forgot about the demo and months later after a decent upgrade i stumble across FB which was not yet released at that time but it reminded me that the demo had been sitting idle therefor almost a year.
what good can a year old demo be thought. you might imagine my suprise. so i played the demo and got fb on release.

I'd been palying X-wing for a long long time (abnd still do as a CO of a squadron) and had become something of an expert pilot.....

But then I thought to myself... what would happen if I had to deal with atmosphere and gravity....

So off to EB did I walk, sussed out the rather limited range of flight sims they had, and come to the conclusion that with a decent price, and in the WW2 era (I'd only ever flown modern sims upto this point) I might pick it up and have a go.. and if it was't that good then I could go back for a modern sim (due to the low price of IL2 at the time)

As it turned out I kind of got hooked (ie: 4 hours a night after work... and a good portion of the weekend if I'm not out racing go-karts) and went back for FB a few weeks later....

Was always a WWII aviation buff and a big fan of the game "Lufftwaffe Commander" by SSI (the music in IL_2 is EXACTLY the same as LC music). I seen someone over at race sim central post about a demo of IL-2 and tried it.

Got it the first day it hit the store shelves.....

I just decided one day that I wanted a new PC game. Went to the store and read the boxes on allot of games. Especially flight sims. Never had a flight sim game before. Of course I had a big selection jet sims, but then I saw a WW2 sim game. Just figured it would be easier to fly a prop plane vs a jet powered plane. Had a choice between what Microsoft had to offer and then there was IL-2. Then it boiled down to price and IL-2 was $20 less. This time, cheaper was better! Lol Since then I've played CFS 2 & 3. IL-2 does it for me.

They have a close out bin- Original IL2 3.99
WHAT A DEAL! bought it!

Wow.. this thread really puts things into perspective... I was 10 days into the sim... LOL.... I thought I paid more than $29 for it though.. LMAO.. I think I'll put my trust in the post on page one rather than my memory.... It seems so long ago... It is wild looking at some of the posts talking about "new" objects.. and "improved" grass.... LMAO.

This thread helps us to see how farwe have come.

I've always loved aircraft as far back as I can remember. I guess thats why I fly one for a living and have flown every flight sim I can get my hands on.

I came across IL2 in a store one day while Christmas shopping with my wife. She saw me reading the box intently and asked if I would like it for a Christmas present. I said yes and started to research this new sim on the internet. After all I learned about it, I was like a little kid on Christmas morning when I openned it! Played it all day and night when I first received it.

The best WWII Flight sim I have every played was IL2 and it has gotten even better with my new computer and FB+AEP+PF.

12-01-2005, 02:35 PM
Best 25 ever? Indeed.

3/4 long years ago......

12-01-2005, 06:59 PM
Man I can harldy remember.. I was a sim lover.. but I was one of those who bought most sims but didn't play them much. They just eded up in my bookshelf. EAW opened it up for me when I discovered that one could play against other people online. That was really what I was missing I guess.. REAL competition.

I think I saw the old IL2 in a shelf at the dealer's place.. bought it even though I had never heard of the plane... the rest is history.. FB followed up... and I am hooked....
