Since I'm not keeping the Cougar I got for Christmas I'm hooking up my X-52. I went to the Saitek site to d/l the Drivers and look What I found:

Well, I, uh, don't think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip-up, sir.

Nicer looking than their last efforts, looks a bit like the old X-36 with all the nice bits from the X-52. Not available in the UK yet, Still time to save up

Well lets see...tacky retro chrome buttons/ sliders replacing my nice matte silver ones, a choice of (oh wow http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ) red, amber, or (puke) olive green LED button lights, two springs instead of one to stiffen up the joystick when you can do this for free by inserting a plastic washer above the existing spring and errr, oh yes some dubious changes of no consequence to the flight simmer in the multi-function display. Do I want to relace my perfectly set up original X-52? Errrr No thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Saitek did mention they removed the firmware deadzone from the X52Pro. Thats a big difference. Hopefully the double spring effort improves the feel. The look of the stick has improved over the star wars look of the original.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Nope - that was sorted out anyway after the first run of sticks beyond a certain serial number.

The look of the stick has improved over the star wars look of the original.

You are kidding right ?? The new one with the chrome bright red/amber/puke green LEDs looks positively retro and way more like "star wars" fodder

someone someday is going to design a 1940's style J/stick and throttle quad. that also have some nicely concealed or otherwise camoflaged buttons, switches and knobs on them - and when that day comes...I will pounce like a tiger wickedfast and it will be rewardink...veryveryvery rewardink!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

That serial number thing was a rumour that I've never seen confirmed by Saitek. I have heard them say it has been removed in the Pro stick. Why would they say it has been removed now if it had been removed before?

Not kidding...the original stick was ugly IMHO...but I have no problem with you liking it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I like the look of the X 52 PRO. I think it is 'unobtrusive' in it's appearance. My computer and monitor are black so it would look right at home.

(not that gogamer needs a plug BUT the X 52 Pro is available online for $179.99)

For that money though it should be VERY close to CH's set up, and it SHOULD perform as well as the CHs. Whether it does is another matter to be proven with time.

I just bought a CH HOTAS for about $320.00. (stick/throttle/peddles)

Saitek's peddles are $150.00 and the $179.99 for the Pro makes it economically equivilent to the CH set up.

If I was confident that the stick would keep center accuracy over time I'd have bought an X 52 Pro. My X 45 was way to taut to be accurate for me. My Cyborg Evo Force feedback stick lost accuracy after a year. I did like how it felt at the beginning though.

Foos for thought.

Saitek is having problems with rudder twist in the X52. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif I would think very hard before I would go out and buy another one. I use to highly recommend them . Not anymore. Go look in their forums and you will see what I mean. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/agreepost.gif

Actually it wasn't a rumour, as I was the one who posted originally about the serial number. It was confirmed by Saitek's UK support, after I complained about my stick. I was told to get a stick with a serial number above S00245477 as this had the deadzone fixed and new firmware installed. The original threads (s) can be found here:

http://www.saitekforum.com/showthread.php?t=6740&highlight=deadzone

Now as for the Pro version, well I did get to try it out at the International Flight Sim show in Birmingham (where I did the Oleg interview), and I have to say, as an X-52 owner, I was very disappointed.

If you have one of the later X-52's with the fixed deadzone, and then use the washer on top of the spring, you will have IMO, a stick which is just as 'tight' as the new pro, if not tighter. Also, and this is just my opinion, the stick felt cheaper, and didn't look as well laid out as the original pro. It was a real disappointment, as I was in tending to upgrade to the Pro, but after a hands on evaluation, I decided to save myself ??50, and keep the original, as it feels and is laid out much better.

You pay your money, and take your choice.....but Oleg uses it for FB...and that's a good enough endorsment for me!

So in conclusion...Pro?...No!

Cheers, MP. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/typing.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes MP...I received one of the first X52's...and was involved in the Saitek forums at the time. I reread the links you posted and no where that I could see, did Richard mention any serial number. He did say that as the process develops the deadzone issue may improve.

I'm sorry to hear that the new X52PRO's double spring didn't improve the spring tension.
I doubt the X52 was Olegs choice as I remember <b style="color:black;background-color:#a0ffff">UBI[/b] requesting information here as to what joystick to buy for the show you attended in England.

Today I made a slight mod to my Saitek Aviator that may improve the performance of your X52, as it uses the same spring setup. You'll notice as you push the stick back and forth the spring cup hits against the stick base making a constant smooth hand pressure difficult. I placed a soft 5/16 neoprene rubber washer between the base of the stick and spring cup, this mod smoothed the action thru the whole axis, as well as adding more spring tension. You should be able to pick up some scrap neoprene rubber at any dive shop. Cut out a 2 1/2 or 3" circle and then cut out the center the diameter of the stick shaft. I was able to pull it down over the top of the Aviator, but because the X52 is much thicker you will have to cut it first to place under the spring cup and around the shaft. Some contact cement could be used to repair the neoprene washer, if need be.

Ah, Richard did send an email, which Neil showed to me, so the serial was definite.

Secondly Oleg and his X-52, in action, can be viewed in this video http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It really was his stick of choice, cheers, MP.

I'm not convinced by the space-age look of the X-52. Something more understated and functional, almost retro, would be fine. Something that is non slip on all surfaces, has indestructible sensors and user servicable parts, too.

If I had the space for a dedicated simulation PC it would be nice to get a long throw stick with some force feedback, a throttle quadrant with controls for prop, mixture, and throttle for at least two engines and starter buttons for each one, and then some sort of additional panel for all those other pesky buttons. Mind you, that means an expenditure of quite a few $$$$ so it is just as well I don't have the space!

I agree whole heartedly with you heywooood. Although I am more concerned with the action and feel of the new stick. It would be nice to have a 40's looking stick. I am interested in one thing though that no one seemed to bring up. I'd like more buttons!
