I've heard about IL-2, but know nothing about it. What are the online requirements? Do you need a disc, or is it a "hard drive" download? How does it compare to other online flight simulations like Aces High and Warbirds?

Thanks in advance!

Its a full retail game with a singleplayer and multiplayer component. It is not a pay to play thing like Warbirds online is.

I suggest you go here to get some idea of what its like: http://www.il2sturmovik.com/

With the present patch for Il2 Forgotten Battles: Ace Expansion pack were now at something close to 150 flyable aircraft from the Eastern and Western Front. That includes a small number of bombers, a larger number of fighter-bombers, and a massive quantity of fighters.

Forgotten Battles in general is regarded as the most authentic flight modeling (to the point where there are many arguments here on the forums about how precise they should be http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) and the best looking WWII sim there is. So its plenty of brain and brawn.

Here's a couple of nice pictures I took (on my computer) from the Ace Expansion pack.

Its great...everyone here will likely recommend it. I'd say go for it...but make sure you get the Forgotten Battles Gold Edition so you are uptodate.

I think IL2 is a great sim. It is very well rounded: it has an active community, there are many planes to fly and each one flys differently, the sound is LOUD, like being right there, engines roar, the cockpits are beautiful...it is just plain fun.

Nothing comes close.
I don't even think about trying other computer entertainments.

Although this is the place to come for most of youtr answers this thread (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11702) at Sim Outhouse says it all. I listed some links to other info there towards the bottom.

It is hands down the best WW2 sim on the market. Nothing and I do mean absolutely NOTHING even comes close. The above thread gives you an idea about specs too.

I half-heartedly bought it IL2 as a part of game shop deal. 1 year later I am ww2 flight sim fanatic.

Well before IL2 the only flight sim I played was B17II Flying Fortress, it was great for its time. Then I played the demo and was so excited about the graphics and the "flight-feeling" and bought the game just as it came out. Played it some time and forgot a while about it. Then came IL2 Forgotten Battles which was just amazing, I also bought it right at the first day it came out! And since this year I am playing IL2 the most time, sometimes a 3D Egoshooter or a nice strategy game like Silent Storm, but well most of the time IL2. And I'm around these forums nearly evry day! I just love that game (my grilfriend doesn't like that too much but thats another story http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )!!!
And the community is just great, many well informed people around here!

I wasn't even into flight sims - now I have to force myself to go to bed sometimes - listen to what everyone here says - this is the best - plain and simple.

I tried M$CFS3 and it just doesn't compare to IL2. The one single thing I find that Il2 has over M$CFS is the feeling of being part of the environment, with CFS I felt detached from everything else which was a big turn off.

Hi Dubow and welcome.

Do not buy IL2:FB. I will tell you why:

1 - You will begin playing and threaten to quit after 30 minutes because you can't take off and if you do you just get shot down.

2 - After several days you will take off ok, but still get shot down.

3 - One day you will get your first kill after 37 attempts, and you'll be so happy you will kiss the dog.

4 - Soon you'll be some kind of an ace and become insufferable around the house.

5 - You are cocky and ready for online play now. Begin over at step 2.

6 - Now you are playing so much, your grass is tall and the wife threatens to leave.

7 - You won't care.

Now move along and don't buy this sim. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Quite simply, this is the closest to real flight that you will experience on a PC simulation.

Interested in FB ? Try the Il-2 demo. then consider that there were a couple of major updates to IL-2 after that demo came out. Then FB. And a big patch for that. Then the Aces pack, and a patch for that.

If the demo is at all to your liking, then AEP is gonna blow your doors off.

Things to try in the demo:
1. Ground attack missions with the IL-2. There are two anti-shipping missions in the demo, one taking place in a thunderstorm. They're both fun, but rain, fog, clouds, lightning, flak, enemy fighters... all too much for one mission !
2. Quick Mission Builder. Airstart dogfights with your choice of planes. The QMB is fun, but relatively simplistic. There's a 3rd-party Uber-QMB that adds pretty much every option available to a Quick setup, that works with Aces now. QMB is still a good way to get a bunch of planes in the air quickly.
3. Online. I can't imagine that there are a *lot* of Demo servers available, but you can get a taste for life online. I oughta install the dmeo just so I can do recruiting.

IL-2 has the graphics and the number of planes you can fly. It is gorgeous! Also, and more importantly, it has a future in this sim market. But it does takes a good machine to run it all.

It has a high learning curve in terms of getting it configured to your machine. The interface in the other two sims you mentioned is much simpler...and gets you up and fighting online in a flash. Learning the trim system here (which is very quirky and not documented) took me weeks to get on top of. But you'll find the community here very helpful....so if you are patient...IL-2 will reward you.

As for Flight Model, it is quite good...though I'd still give warbirds the nod here especially in the stall regime. But there are no game stoppers here at IL-2, and realize too all flight models have their limits.

Definately recommend the gold pack. Best way to get in. I got mine for under $30.

Worr, out

First of all, thank you for all the info on IL-2. I started my sim career with AW which I played for two years. After a two year hiatus, I started playing Aces High and have been playing that since October of 2002. For those that don't know anything about AH, they're upgrading to AH2 which is supposedly starting tomorrow(well, we all know about promised release dates). The requirements for AH2 are pretty high(P4, 1.5 gig and good vid card), the vid card of which I have to upgrade to even play the new version. I don't know if my current card will play IL-2(it's an Intel(R)82865G that's integrated into my motherboard), so I still might have to upgrade. Anyone tell me if my vid card will handle IL-2?

Integrated video is not good. The Intel integrated video is meant for office solutions and is provided with limited 3D acceleration support. Essentially its a cheap way to get video onto a computer when the need is not there to have something more substantial.

You are into gamming and/or simming and you do need to have something more powerful to play todays games. So you may be able to play FB with that card...but not very well.

Even a cheap FX5200 for $60 is an upgrade...

Believe me,if you don`t want to spend a whole bag o`cash then don`t buy this game.Every sequel brings new hardware requirements which are always relatively high but along come unbelievable detail, features and realism.Once you get good hardware the game runs smoothly without problems though(unlike LOMAC,CFS3).

For some little movies showing online action, visit the movies section of my site....since I'm average (at best) it shows a little of everything, from skip bombing to dogfights....

It's a grand hobby, but like all hobbies requires time and a little bit of money...
