View Full Version : Is this game playable after mid-1943?

Well the happy times are over for sure!

No matter what I do I am detected by those elite Americans. They can be 5000 meters away and they start pinging even when I am at a dead stop/silent running. The only way I can get even remotely close to a convoy is when the weather is heavy storms and heavy winds.

Now of course this is all very realistic. I am sure none of us here would want to be anywhere near a U-Boat after mid-1943. The Allies had the U-Boat men coming and going. But this is a game, remember! In fact it is the fisrt game I have owned where victory is out of the question. Survival is the only objective in this game and in real life for that matter. But, as you can imagine, this doesn't make for a fun afternoon of gaming!

So, how do you all do it after 1943? And I am playing at 100% realism so please only reply if you are as well. Oh heck, reply anyway. I just would really like to hear the 100% realism folks for sure.

August 1943 here with 100% realism for the entire war. I really haven't had *that* much trouble. Yes, my boat has been battered to hell whereas in the past I'd be long gone before the DCs started dropping, but it hasn't gotten to the point of impossibility yet. I play Dead is Dead as well. I've found that it is pointless trying to attack a convoy unless you're ahead of it because of that wonderful Allied radar. I'll typically plot the convoy's path extensively if I manage to head it off, sit myself in it's path, and go down to 100m. When the lead ships are a few hundred meters away (according to my calculations; obviously we're blind down there) I rig for silent and head to 13m. Pick out a fat juicy tanker or two, launch all fish, and then crash dive to about 200m. I typically maintain my position underneath the convoy since (a) I like to attack again when my tubes are reloaded, and (b) it makes the DDs job much more difficult when they're having to weave around friendly ships during their attack runs.

Other than that, there's not much you can do. It's getting quite difficult, but it's not impossible.

Hey Nukem_Hicks
Good luck with the rest of the war.

Yes, late war success went to the few. So the days of coming back to port with 10-15 sunk are now the thing of the past. Getting home 1943 at all became a darn near impossible. The allies became smart and the U-boats became the hunted. Good luck commrade, you'll need it.

By 1943 the odds of a U-boat returning to base was about 70%. The odds of returning undamaged was 20%

Until you can pick up the 10cm radar band... you're in for a nasty ride (if the game is modelling historically)

Thanks to the Allied radar detectors, running your own radar is like radioing your location to the Allied ASW forces...pure suicide.

When things got harder I changed my tactics a little. Before 1943 I would attack a convoy on it's sides and would try and get in the middle of it before I dove deep. That stoped working so now I always attack ahead of the convoy and head right at them going slow and silent at 25m. then when the lead escorts are right on top of me I head to periscope depth and start launching torps just under the keel then as soon as all fish have left the boat I dive deep and continue on the same path. I usually get at least three ships that way. When you get better radar detection and the XXI things start looking up. The XXI is a DD killer. I have been on 4 patrols with it and it is a huge improvement over my IXC. The thing is so fast submerged that you smoke the enemy before they even know your there and can slip away before they can find you just to line up another attack. Since getting the XXI I don't run or dive from DD's. I now line em up and knock em down if possible.

I just finished a patrol where I ran into my first carrier escorted by 5 dd's. I sunk the carrier first and the picked off all the dd's one at a time. Took like 3 hours real time but I got every one of them. Of coarse I took some damage and had to return to base but man was I having fun. By far my favorite patrol yet. I took plenty of video and screen shots so I can relive the moment for years to come. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The DDs dont bother me too much. It's the aircraft from '43 onward that make playing sometimes seem like a chore. I know it's realistic but it really gets annoying.

I totally agree. It can be a little frustrating to say the least.

Having done a complete redo of the RND and SCR mis files I can tell you one reason the DDS are so good. Everyone from 1944-45 is an elite unit, everyone!!! I changed that to only half being elite with the rest veterans. Simply put, all allied DDs were not super crews and I feel that is incorrect. I also changed all the poor RN crews at the beginning because most DDs were decently trained. The game uses 1 2 3 4 to rate the crews and all at the start are 1 then all become 2 etc. I mixed it up based on what I understand from reading on this.
But, as I keep making these intense mod changes I have to start over so I have never seen 1943. This time I hope to make the run through. But, I am 92% as I still like the screen shots.
With much stronger early escorts and more of them from the first convoys it is also necessary to drop in the front door as they will keep you down from the side while the convoy slips away.
There are no "Girly Man" destroyers in my SH3!!!
I added a number of armed trawlers that are 1 at the beginning but those are always in addition to the other destroyers.
I also believe dead is dead and this extra crew rating on early DDs increases that chance a whole bunch.
I do like hearing about 1943 on as I will be there ate some point and like to have a clue from those that have done it.

Yikes! Guess I better enjoy myself. I have had a 100% real going since release day and have had nothing more than damaged flak guns.

It's late 42 now, guess the fun is over.....

Well, you could go through the 1700 plus in each of the RND and SCR.mis files and reduce the 4s to 3 in half. I really believe it would be 20% elite, 30 % veteran and 50% decent. But, I do want the last to be close to impossible.
I intend on being a U-Boat Girly Kapitan come 1944.
If I can get that far I will not be a hero as the war will be lost. I might transfer to Norway and stay up in the cold country till the Fat man sings.
That is if I survive as the 2 and few 3s nearly got me on a Dec 39 patrol. Worst DC I have ever got and survived.
