View Full Version : Enhanced RAF voice pack

This is the original voice pack as found in Extreme_One et al's RAF campaign and in the new BoE patch from Just Flight.

I've just taken the original files and re-processed them to give them a more authentic "Radio" sound.

Please note that this isn't endorsed by anyone involved in the making of the original speech pack. This is just something I did for my own pleasure that I'm happy to share with the community.

Download the zip file and extract the files. Copy the GB folder into your IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\samples\Speech folder (back up the one that's in there).

While creative I find the distortion effects added to be migrane inducers because the AI tends to 'speak' non stop and it just leads to a bunch of noise.

Hello Huxley_S,

Great enhancement, even though I had already re-processed the original sound files and put them through filters this one did the job well. I would have appreciated at least a heads up but your good work made up for it. Thanks for posting and keeping the README file to give proper credit to the voice pack.

Kindest regards,

Nikolai (NTESLA/THX-1138)

Hmmm....

Ntesla - I was worried that this might upset the people involved. That wasn't the intention.

If anyone involved is upset by this then naturally the link will be removed right away.

I totally understand that I am standing on the shoulders of giants here... all I've done is reprocess the files you guys created.

I've tried to do a proper job of it... and do your work credit. I personnally want to claim no credit for this.

I've been using this for several months, but installing the BoE patch overwrote it and remined me that some other dudes might like it.

That's all.

Hello Huxley,

Maybe I misworded, I praise what you did to my RAF sound pack I just wanted to get heads up before you posted the link to make sure that the work makes right, which in your case it definitely does! You can leave link up, I do not have a problem since it is a great enhancement to it. I tried it our all this morning and was pleased with it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hey dude... sorry for the lack of heads up. Common courtesy eluded me there for a minute. Anyway, glad you like it. If some other players do then so much the better.

Thanks,

I just went through the files and discovered that there were some imperfections in some of the files. Some of the audio had the ends clipped slightly and a few files were missing.

I've gone through the whole thing again and fixed the problems.

If you like the sound of this voice pack then you should download it again from my site to make sure you've got the latest fixes. Sorry for the inconvenience folks. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a go!

cool!

It might pay to keep this bumped for a while as the BoE patch has arrived and maybe some of the BoE users will appreciate this.

Just FYI this is about the 4th GB voice pack I've tried (2 by NTESLA - this one and another which was an edit of NTESLAs - I can't remember who did it though)

Oh yeah, another thing I've just remembered.

One of the other things I did when I worked on this was to normalise the volume of the RAF voices to the same volume as the USAF voices and change the eq so that they matched as closely as possible.

Anyone playing the new RAF campaigns in BoE will like this because there are a lot of missions where both RAF and US flights are in the air at the same time.

Don't take this as a criticism, it's just my personal observation - I found the RAF voice pack to sound "fake". Like it was a lot of americans using fake accents (and some not even that).

Then definitely you have a misunderstanding on what commonwealth stands for. In the voice pack that I made people from the following countries contributed, the majority are genuine radio men :

- Canada
- Ireland
- South Africa
- Australia
- New Zealand
- England

Maybe you were doctrined by Hollywood's take on how these people should sound like. Just like many non-Americans think that all of us speak with a Southerner accent.

Doesn't bother me (although my contribution was about 1% what NTesla put in!). From my perspective it's for the community to do whatever they want to get the best experience from it.

Reading more about the Polish contribition to the Battle of Britain it is a shame that we couldn't get more voice actors. But then the number of allowable voice actors are limited, so if I remember correctly that is why it got trimmed to be being a commonwealth voice pack rather than one covering all who served with the RAF. Hopefully when BoB comes out those voices (Poles, Czechs, French, etc) can be added.

"Like it was a lot of americans using fake accents"

It all sounds pretty natural to me in terms of accent. I certainly used my normal accent (Midlands, modified a bit by 15+ years living in Yorkshire).

Now the Archers... that rural "Borchester" accent sounds a bit over-egged... and I say that as someone who comes from rural Warwickshire stock on one side of the family!

Accents sounded pretty authentic to me (and I`m English), also the lack of the `upper class` English accent (was that what you expected?) made it seem more authentic. The closest `American` I tend to hear seems to be the South African voice. My only quibbles is that the voices don`t sound quite urgent enough, maybe a little too reserved. But there are some great bits I like such as:

"Your one, I think." I like it cos he`s not sure, as might be the case.

"Where the HELL are you fighter blokes?" I swapped this with another bomber call voice which didn`t sound as urgent. It`s great, makes you want to rush back to the threatened bombers.

"Come on, you jokers, i got one on my tail!" A little more fear in the voice would`ve been even better.

I also like the Scottish accent, although it sounds a little too laid back. Oh yea and the Brit scream doesn`t work, it seems too long and just not quite right. The American, "I`m on fire - YAAARGHH!" is perfect.

I notice no Scots are in the list. Are you sure? Doesn`t sound Irish and I`ve got an Irish friend... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Ah well, they`re not paid voice-actors so good stuff all round.

Anyway, this version of Huxley`s doesn`t really make that much difference to me... Someone said it was migraine inducing, but I don`t find that the case at all. Just more hissy, which is probably more realistic.

Hi,

Even if I hadn't been a contributer to the voice pack, I firmly believe that NTESLA did a fantastic job. In no way does it sound fake.

Just because there are no, 'Cor blimey, Guv'nor, I 'ad me collar felt by the peelers, din' I?' or 'Whizzer show! That sausage eater's kite really took a bashing from Ginger's crate', in there doesn't mean it isn't authentic.

In fact, the specification we received from NTESLA was for us to use our own, normal, voices without any put on accents. And I think that's precisely what you've got.

It's an interesting subject, actually, because last time I was in the States, I watched some TV commercials that I'd also seen in the UK a few days before. I think the one that sticks in my head is the 'make up artist from the Titantic' (Revlon?) one where, in the UK, the British make up person had a normal accent whereas the American version had a ridiculous, middle-class, middle English accent dubbed over it. Conversely, we get the dubbed Sunny Delight ads where some snot nosed pukebag is heard to be happily dubbed into some non-determinable English accent whilst consuming vast amounts of the stuff on his quest to turn himself orange..or yellow...or lime green.

Cheers,
Norris

Yep.. no cabbage crates over the briny in the voice pack. The parlance to be used was carefully screened. E.g. no 'winchester' for running out of ammo as this wasn't apparently current at the time of the Battle of Britain.

I can't say much for my voice acting - maybe I lacked the correct urgency. Recording 150 little snippets does take it out of you, though!

Perhaps next time we should see if Martin Jarvis is available to do a posh voice?

Actually in terms of advert dubbing it is odd that they dub Andie McDowell from her normal voice into something more bland. It's not like Andie McDowell is hard to understand in the first place or something! Bizzare...

Yeah.. it's top notch. It's realistic alright! Listening to some BoB vets on TV lately there are very few Terry Thomas or Mary Poppins type accents... well none actually... they all talk like you guys... like normal people.

I've just taken the next step with me enhancement... just didn't sound radio-like enough for me. When I hear a radio transmission I want it to be all muffled and hard to understand. That's what it's really like... you have to train your ear to it. In a dogfight it just sounds like total mayhem... that's the idea! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

"few Terry Thomas or Mary Poppins type accents..."

I would certainly hope there were no Mary Poppins accents! More to the point no "How's yer father, Mary Poppins, supercalifragimesserschmitt" **** Van Dyck! An accent only eclipsed (noun du jour) by Sean Connery's Russian ("Yesh") or Egyptian ("Yesh") or Irish ("Yesh") accents!

Ah no, sorry extreme_one you misunderstand me. I was talking there about the enhancement in general.

I had to do a second version because I realised I'd removed all the "Stay With Your Leader" stuff which some people might want plus there were quite a few files that didn't sound quite right.

I'm happy with the way it sounds now so I won't be changing it anymore, so no 3rd version.
