View Full Version : How to rack up tank kills with HurriMkIID?

07-05-2008, 10:03 AM
I'm experienting with this plane, but somehow find killing tanks with it quite hard (like with stuka). I'm used to killing tanks with NS-37 equipped IL2, which do pierce PzIII and even PzIV without trouble, plus it carries 50 shells per cannon!

So, how do you do it most effectively in a Hurri? Steep approach angle? What convergence do you use? Do you fire only single shell from each cannon per pass? What kind of targets do you use HE shells for?

07-05-2008, 10:12 AM
HE shells are for use against soft skinned targets, trucks etc.

07-05-2008, 10:12 AM
I donĀ“t know how well those cannons can penetrate, but if you have HE rounds in them (I havent flown that bird in a very long time) you are best from using them to more soft targets, armored cars, trains and such.

I personally shoot as many shells that I can shoot effectivly. Some times just one, sometimes more. Suite it to your own taste and shooting skills.

I bet they are, but truck can easily be destroyed even with a light MG. What kind of common target in this sim you use 40mm HE for?

Well if there is many shells try attacking for example a car column. One well placed shot should put many cars to scrapyard. If I remember correclty those 40mm cannons were not that big success.

I've not tried the Hurri 2D, but the Me110 with BK37mm HE is very capable of killing even the largest tanks.

Come in at 45 degrees or above and hit the top.

try this with the urri.

BTW you WILL die a lot practising, so be prepared http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

First off you have to see the tanks and that Ive not been able to do well. Any mods to make ground objects larger?

WHen practising leave externals enabled, then press F7 when in the general area.

That will et you get the some practice at least.

Hehe, I found something HE shells equipped hurri excells at, like his german counterpart: killing bombers! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

I've found the best way is to come in almost on the deck, perpendicular to the side of the tank, and fire when under 250 meters to target . That usually does the trick for me.

07-05-2008, 12:46 PM
I recommend you hack it again and increase AP capabilities of the round. Should help a lot.

Don't forget that the Hurri MkIID was only effective in the early part of the desert war...before the Germans started to up-armour their tanks...after which it became less effective and rockets started to become more useful against tanks...it could never knock out a Tiger
In game I find it cannot deal with later models of MkIV or even MKIII
Obviously a high attack against the relatively weak upper armour is good...but it is easy to become a lawn dart
So now I prefer to attack the rear or side of a tank from just above the ground level...and fire several rounds as close as possible before pulling up and over the tank..
This also has a certain advantage...in the desert the ground is not always flat and so your approach and retreat from the target can be masked by sand dunes...which also help reduce the chance of being hit by those sniper tank gunners http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You can`t kill tanks with a hurricane IId. Get some bombs and Hurri-bomber them.

07-05-2008, 08:42 PM
You CAN get the PzKfw II and early III models and the Czeck made 38....and if you're very lucky an early model Mk.IV

what the hell is a hurri mk2d?

A Hurricane equipped with a 40mm Anti Tank Gun

07-06-2008, 03:09 AM
Never seen that in game before!

07-06-2008, 03:13 AM
That's because its in the 'unofficial' game!

07-06-2008, 03:17 AM
The cannon armed Hurricanes in the game only have 20mm cannon.

Guess again.

So these hacks allow one to glue 40mm cannons on planes? Is that right? or is it just a cosmetic thing? Just a skin?

07-06-2008, 04:11 AM
I didn`t know we were talking about the modded version. Got mixed up with the standard Hurricane IIb!

The confusion begins already.

07-06-2008, 04:45 AM
No its a whole new plane, with its own slot.

Ok, I've done some testing, target was in all cases the earliest version of PzKfwIII and ammo was AP. Results are kinda... weird. Actually, by my observation, chances of destroying a tank do not depend on the angle (both azimuth and inclination). I am attaching some scrshots - I was using arcade=1 which enables you to see where you hit by white dots. Where these are not visible enough, I marked them with yellow circle.

1. Attacking a tank into rear quater from a ~40deg dive:

First attack:

Second attack:

(note 2 hits into the top of the turret!)

Third attack:

7 direct hits.

Fourth attack:

Fifth attack:

Sixth attack (1 shot, 2 hits):

2. Attacking a tank head on horisontally:

First attack

Second attack

Third attack

Fourth attack

3. Attacking a tank from 6 o'clock horisontally:

First attack (needed 3 shots, scored 5 hits):

Second attack (took only 1 shot, 2 hits):

Third attack (2 shots, 4 hits):
http://shrani.si/f/11/La/2yasUTmL/26.jpg http://shrani.si/f/2W/a0/1lW0cpw9/27.jpg

Fourth attack (1 shot, 2 hits):

4. Attacking side of the tank horisontally:

First pass:

Second attack (3 shots, 6 hits):

Third attack (3 shots, 6 hits):

Fourth attack (3 shots, 6 hits):

In short: This type of tank doesn't seem to be any easier to destroy from specific angles (i.e. high rear)... actually, as weird as it seems, I got the best results attacking it horisontally head on! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Still, this was just a quick test, and many many more testing should be done before considering this "head on" method of attacking PzKpfwIII seriously.

(excuse me for crappy graphics, it's all my ancient radeon is able to spit out at high fps)

Very interesting findings TT.

The BK37mm HE depends on you hitting the very top of the tank, this way anything up to a T34 is destroyed with one shot, and anything bigger in 1 or 2.

Kinda wierd that the 40mm tank buster AP is weaker. It needs tweaking.

07-07-2008, 12:38 PM
I've been out of the loop for a while...where do you find all this stuff?

07-07-2008, 12:45 PM
Google allaircraftarcade mate http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ta! Will do. Will have to make a separate install. I'd love a go in the MkIID...

I actually don't think it's a cannon issue. Look how easily it pierced frontal armor on PzKfWIII in a horisontal attack (that's, of course, where tanks should have thickest armor), but failed to pierce thru the ceiling. Looks like a tank DM issue to me.

I'll do some more testing on Sturm guns.

no need for a separate install mate, theres a switcher available somewhere. I use it for flying modded offline and vanilla online with one install.

I did some testing of a Hurri IID with AP ammunition on a Sturmgeschutz III assault gun / tank destroyer:

I performed 4 kind of attacks versus StugIII:

horisontally head on (convergence 120m)

horisontally from rear (convergence 120m)

horisontally to the side (convergence 120m)

dive attack from rear quarter at an inclination angle ~40-45 degrees (convergence 250m) [/list]

In order to get statistically acceptable numbers I repeated each kind of attack 36 times (3xfull magazine). I always fired only one shot and made sure that both shells hit.

In the first three tests I set convergence to 120m and came as close to the tank as possible before firing. Convergence in the last test (dive attack) was 250m.

1. Horisontal head on attack: All 36 StugIII guns survived the attack. Kill probability ~ 0%

2. Horisontal rear side attack: 21 tanks were destroyed, 15 survived the attack. Kill probability ~ 60%

3. Horisontal side attack: 19 tanks were destroyed, 17 survived the attack. Kill probability ~ 50%

4. Shallow dive attack: 14 tanks were destroyed, 22 survived the attack. Kill probability ~ 40%

Interestingly, horisontal attack into rear side of the tank seems to be more effective than shallow dive attack.

Attaching some scrshots from the test:

looking at the data used in game for tanks....it appears that Oleg's team probably just copied armour thickness tables to give the relative strengths on front/top/back/sides....

sometimes this gives unrealistic results as it doesn't really allow for slope/quality of armour plate etc.

The data for each type of tank is easily adjusted to experiment with and find a balance which the player feels is more realistic.....in the privacy of his own computer
