View Full Version : OT: Looking for a new Videocard

S! everyone, I'm shopping for a new video card, Im not looking to spend a fortune ($200 or below). I wanted a new videocard that I will be able to play games like PF, Fear, and COD, all on high settings. (I want to be able to get the water on perfect in PF) Right now I have a Radeon 9600PRO, so I assume anything would be better. I was looking at the new Radeon X1000 series or cards, especially the X1300 PRO. It has 256mb of video ram, and I read some reviews and it seems pretty good for the price. My friend has a Radeon 9800 XT, I want a video card that can out-perform his. Any help would be appreacated, thx in advance.

FEAR's a killer

I play FB on Perfect with my PC now, since I got more RAM and a Nvidia 6600, but FEAR will become a slide show unless I use conservative settings

FEAR is a great shooter by the way, pity it's so short. The AI is fantastic

If you want to outdo the 9800xt for $200 your going to have a tough time. For a budget, I'd say the Nvidia 6800 is a lot of bang for the buck. For about $300 you could have a 7800 and best your friend.

Don't know a lot about the x1xxx series though.

Yeah I dont know that much about the X1000 series either. I just read some more reviews and I think Im gonna stray away from it, I just wanted a card that could use Shader Model 3.0. Right now Im looking at the Radeon X700, this one seems to be much better. Any thoughts?

It might help to know what type of expansion slot you have on your motherboard. Is it PCI, PCIe, or AGP. A lot of the newer video cards are only available in PCIe.

hey chwy niblet....

do you have AGP or PCIe slot on ur mobo?

Also...you should look at refurbished cards...most of those were returns or for some little reason would not work in a machine...i doubt most are defective...probably cheaper to get one of those!

hey come fly with us sometime bud!

Chuck_Older, is correct in that the 6600 is about the best NVidia card you will be able to get for leass than $200. I am running the NVidia 6200 and it works fine but I wish I would have bought the 6600 instead. As far as other brands of video cards go I dont have any thoughts since I have never owned anything but NVidia (since 3DFX is no more).
Others on this forum should be able to give you pretty good advice for the other brands of video cards out there.

Good Luck!

Sorry guys I should have told you what slots are avilable in my mobo. I've got an AGP slot, sadly no PCIe. I've never strayed from ATI as far as GPUs are conserned. I'd be willing to try the NVidia 6600. So it seems like that the two cards im norrowed down to are the NVidia 6600GT and the Radeon X700PRO.

Any Ideas?

best card for cost versus price is 7800 GT 289 bucks

I would choose the 6600 over the X700 any day.
Since your stuck with an AGP slot and the
6800 series cards in AGP are hard to get
you no longer have much choice. No one is making
high end video cards for AGP.
If you can find one a 6800GT or 6800ULTRA will
really wake that rig up.

I'd stretch to a X800 GPU based card if you can. The X700's are not that good.

I don't know how much they are in the states but in the UK the X800GTO cards are cheap and pretty good cards.
