Ran two more patrols with the U-597 out of Bergen. On Patrol2, encountered a QP convoy out of Murmansk. It had only 5 merchants but 4 escorts. I was able to sink only a C2 and a T3 out of two separate attacks.

I decided to start patrol3 out of Narvik. Spent about 10 days wandering around aimlessly just south of Jan Mayen island and decided to head west toward the Denmark Strait. Finally got a convoy report - very similar to convoy I encountered the first patrol in that it was large, heavily escorted, and going 12 knots. This time I got a better position and sank one T3 and damaged a second so that it had to drop out. I withdrew and bagged it later.

As I see it, the one problem with going after the Murmansk convoys is the loss of renown from not going to the patrol zone. On the other hand, I expect that if one does it right, it should be possible to run a series of patrols out of Narvik and rack up a very good score. It requires patience and planning.

The correct approach is to run patterns south of Jan Mayen Island until a convoy approaches. Head out and contact the convoy, sending a report to BdU. Try sending a report every 2 or 3 hours until you reach the ambush area which is at closest approach to the Norwegian coast - south of Jan Mayen. The idea is to draw the "friendly TF" that seems to meander around in the vicinity of Narvik (it popped up on the first 2 of my patrols) and/or air support. With the help of air attack and the TF, there should be lots of cripples to harvest. I daresay 100K is quite possible - and there should be some great screenshots, particularly if the friendly TF gets engaged.

That sounds very interesting, Paul. Keep us posted on how this new tactic/strategem works.

Er... how do you do that? I didn't realise any Flottille in SH3 operated from Narvik.

At the end of Patrol2, I went to Narvik and docked there.

Whenever you dock at other than your home port, you will be resupplied but you will only have access to the crew screen. You won't be able to purchase upgrades nor will you be able to switch the torpedo loadout. You are also not assigned a PZ out of a non-home port. In my case, I wasn't planning on going to a PZ.

The nice thing about Narvik is that is very close to the PQ-QP convoy route. You can reach that route quickly and then proceed west along it to Jan Mayen island. Once you pick up a PQ convoy, shadow it east to vicinity of Bj¸rn¸ya island.

I may actually start this career over again because I'm nearing the end of 1942 and haven't been able to properly set things up.

Thanks for that! I'll try it the next time I play.
