When Allied ETO Squadrons did start using D-Day stripes????

Invasion stripes were painted on allied aircraft on the night of 5th June, and the early hours of the morning of the 6th June.

From 25 August 44, Squadrons had until 10 September 44 to remove them.

And although artists and decal manufacturers would have you believe that they were all nicely painted, perfectly spaced and finished, the fact is that many aircraft were crudely painted using large paint brushes.

Large paint brushes and brooms, right? Also, to save paint, I'm sure they diluted it with water, maybe too much in some instances leaving a dull paint color.

The stripes were painted on under a secret order that was issued right before the invasion started. There are stories of planes taking off to with paint so fresh that it hadn't fully dried yet.

As I understand it, the reason for the sudden addition of the stripes was to foil any enemy attempts to mingle with Allied formations using captured planes. I suppose it was also to help young, inexperienced AA gunners easily tell friends from foes.

Yeah its was 99% for the AA gunners and ground troops. For D-Day itself the Luftwaffe wouldn't have any sneaky schemes planned as for them it was supposed to be just another "ordinary" day on the Western Front.

Isn't there an IL-2 skin of a Bf109 with invasion stripes (I think it's called InvasionStripes). Anyone know the background to this ?

There were also Il2 Sturmovik skins with the psychedelic "Funky" paint schemes. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I've seen photos of captured 109Ks with invasion stripes in the last winter of the war. Perhaps it was suppose to represent one of these before we had the K Model in game?

Personally, I very much dislike any skins with the invasion stripes and tend to avoid them if at all possible. They were only supposed to be employed for less than 4 months making up only a small percentage of the time of the war yet they seem to be "standard" in many cases...and look awful IMO.

During the invasion of Sicily, Operation Husky, many allied C-47s were shot down and damaged by AAA fire from friendly ships below. Due to poor coordination and communication, the AAA gunners could not tell that they were downing allied transports. Some type of mark or design on friendly aircraft during operations such as Operation Overlord, was therefore needed to distinguish friendly planes. I remember reading this in "Combat Jump" by Ed Ruggero.
