I saw this screen shot during a recent install.
How do you get your I-16 to mount-up like this?
That would be a good co-op idea.
You could have three pilots and some gunners all on the same team. Very cool.

It's possible in the FMB. I don't remember the exact process, but it's pretty simple. Set up a TB-3 SPB and I-16 SPB with a couple waypoints each. Then by clicking "set" and positioning the green target indicator, the I-16s will be set to spawn with the TB-3.

It's also possible in an online dogfight. The players select their respective aircraft, and the I-16s simply taxi under the Tb-3's wings, press "Attach/Detach Aircraft" and raise their gear.

Use Attach/Detach Aircraft command - find in Controls > Aircraft controls.

You need bind a key to this command.

So, park your i16 next to TB-3 and use this command.

Yeah no need to use FMB. Just taxi up to the aircraft and hit detach/attach aircraft if you're in the right position you will attach.

We tried doing it in mid air, but no dice.

In FMB set them up the way you'd set planes to take off of a carrier--have the I-16 waypoint target set to the TB bomber. They have to be the SPB versions of the I-16 and TB by the way.

You can have the Tupolev bomber drop the I-16's automatically which is useful if you have a flight of I-16's, but it's a bit tricky, what I've done in the past is give the bombers an attack ground waypoint with the target set on an enemy vehicle like a truck or car or whatever, the bombers will release the I-16's over that vehicle usually.

It's fun messing around with the SPB planes whether you have them as enemies attacking your base or if you're flying as one.

I will be messing around with that then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Well you do need the FMB if you want to make use of this for single player missions. It's quite possible... it looks very cool as well!

M2morris, check out the Ubizoo coops thread on this page or where it is stickied at the top of the Off-Topic forum.

We fly this scenerio quite often. Usually with unlimited ammo and three bombers and six fighters. With twenty guys online this is hilarious.

Join us on a Saturday and you can try it yourself. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Sounds like a plan. Soon as I work out the bugs I'll check it out.

From the readme:

--------------------------
Using the SPB

The SPB consists of the TB-3 mothership and a pair of attached I-16s. There are special versions of these, TB-3 4M-34R SPB and I-16type24 SPB.
When building a mission, you can attach the I-16 to the mothership the same way you attach gliders to planes – set up a flight of I-16s with one waypoint, and set the waypoint’s target to the TB-3 (go to the Waypoint tab of the Object window with your I-16 selected, hit the Set button and click on the TB-3). The I-16 will be attached to the TB-3 in the beginning of the mission. You cannot build missions where I-16s start detached from the TB-3 and attach afterwards.
AI flying these I-16s will automatically detach when the TB-3 approaches a GATTACK waypoint. The I-16s then will attack the site and return to escort the TB-3 back. You may use the “Aircraft Attach/Detach” button when flying these planes to detach from the TB-3, or drop the I-16s if you’re flying the TB-3.
In dogfight mode, you may attach your I-16 to the TB-3 mothership while on the airfield. To do so, taxi the plane to the attachment port under the TB-3’s wing, and press the “Aircraft Attach/Detach” button. Your plane will be attached to the mothership and your landing gear will be raised automatically.
Note that while attached to a TB-3, I-16s drain the mothership’s fuel reserve, and if their engines are left at low RPM their fuel tanks will slowly refill to 100%.

According to historical sources there were many different versions of the SPB link-up. We only model one of them which was used in 1942 and later.

In a dogfight mode, when you are taxiing in your I-16 towards the attach point under the wing of TB-3, the top of your propeller might seem as if it's gonna struck the trailing edge of the TB-3 wing. It doesn't happen, your prop slips right through with no damage.

Probably needless to say - both the TB-3 mothership and the I-16 must be a (SPB) version.

Soviets were experimenting with parasite fighter setup quite a lot. In one version a mothership was carrying 5 parasite fighters (!), three atop and two below the machine, with fighters being of 3 different types:

http://www.aviation-history.com/zveno/zveno6-1.jpg

Interestingly - fighters were obliged to have their engines running on military power during flight so they helped the mothership. In order not to drain their fuel, they had fuel lines which allowed them to refill the fuel tanks with the fuel from the mothership.

They were also experimenting with hooking back up to the mothership, but they only tried to do it on one attach point - under the fuselage:

http://aeroweb.lucia.it/rap/RAFAQ/rafaq_zveno5.jpg

Funny history crumb is that when they were experimenting with Zveno-2 (it consisted of Tupolev TB-3 mothership and three Polikarpov I-5 fighters, which were all mounted above the mother plane), the procedure of mounting the centerline fighter atop the fuselage was so clumsy, that at one point they simply left the fighter there, fixed it permanently and removed the wings and the tail, so the fighter served only the purpose of being a 5th engine. The pilot was still needed to operate the engine.

Interestingly, entire Zveno project, despite it's inherently dangerous nature, took a toll of only one fatality - it happened when one of the parasite I-Z fighters made a mistake during the takeoff procedure and hit the bomber wing while failing to separate. During emergency landing of the mothership with the parasite fighters still attached the unfortunate pilot of this fighter was killed, but the mother ship landed succsessfuly.

You know, I wonder at that. It *seems* dangerous, yes, but how many people have actually died in all of the parasite fighter/aircraft docking/etc projects over the years? The one you mention is actually the only death I've heard about related to any of these projects...

These were operational for some time with some success:

Here's a simple little mission you can copy and paste into a .mis file if you are having problems setting it up.
