View Full Version : DX10 stuttering!! why?

03-20-2009, 04:57 PM
Not sure if this is happening to a lot of people or not, but when running HAWX on DX10 I get ridiculous amounts of stuttering going on even though my average fps stays above 70.

In-game video test runs perfectly smooth also. Stuttering occurs when new units appear on screen, when explosions happen on screen, and particularly when I fire my machine gun.

I get no issues at all in DX9. But the game looks soooo much better in DX10 it would be a pity to play it that way...

Toning down the levels of detail make absolutely no difference at all. I can turn up every possible graphic option all the way up in DX9 and get butter-smooth gameplay. I have tried playing the game on minimum gfx settings in DX10 and I STILL get stutters...

My PC specs are as follows:

Intel Quad-core Q9450 2.6Ghz. OC@ 3.6Ghz
EVGA nforce 790i Ultra motherboard
EVGA Nvidia GTX 280 GFX card
4 Gigs 1600Mhz Corsair RAM
500G Western Digital HD
Creative X-Fi Titanium Pro sound card
Running on Vista 64 SP1

I've read somewhere that this issue is happening on nvidia cards only....
Anyone can help me out? plzzzzz

(I am removing a couple paragraphs written in a moment of frustration which was pretty much me venting about how upset I was. After having cooled down a bit, I realize it simply wasn't very constructive nor helpful. Although I still think Ubisoft deserves some critisism, I think they get more than their share in other threads posted in these forums. Thanks for your understanding.)

I had the same thing, try and start a game and when it "stutters" press ctrl+alt+del then it will most likely bring up the taskmanager, close it and re-enter the game then it should work.

03-20-2009, 08:49 PM
Hmmmm just tried the above suggestion and sadly it doesn't resolve the problem =(

03-20-2009, 09:07 PM
try the new nvidia beta drivers, they were made for hawx.

03-20-2009, 09:33 PM
Thanks for the tip on the beta driver. Unfortunately the result remains the same.

I looked up the driver and it seems to only address the SLI profile bug.

Was still worth a shot to try. didn't work tho =(

03-20-2009, 10:12 PM
I get the same issue on my system, but i thought it was just dx11 issues in win7. I'm using the win7 beta drivers but i may have to try those vista ones made for hawx.

Core i7 920 @ 3.6ghz
12gb DDR3 1333mhz
GTX 260 OC'd 700/1500/2200mhz

Windows 7 x64 b7000

03-21-2009, 02:56 AM
Yes this particular issue seems to be recurring with nvidia GFX cards it seems. I've looked up the other posts with this similar 'stuttering' issue in DX10 and all those affected seem to be using a 200 series Nvidia card. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

03-21-2009, 10:23 AM
Well not rly i got a 9800GT card and i get the same stuttering thing plus the dump file thingie in the campaign at random moments, weird part is it worked fine in dx10 once without a problem played about 14 or more missions in a row, then upon exiting the game and starting it again im having stuttering now and dump file problems, the dx9 version works good tho, but i kinda refuse to play this game at nowhere near its max potential

03-21-2009, 02:34 PM
I stand corrected then. Frankly, I am somewhat relieved that people are showing up with the same problems as me.

The more of us that have this issue, the more likely we will see a patch or driver to fix the stuttering. I just pray its sooner than later.

I supposed I should be grateful to not be affected by the dump file error. at least not yet...

If your are reading this and you experience the same stuttering in DX10 please leave a comment.

i get some slow downs but now the full version seem to be a little better then the demo. which isnt saying to much for ub i since they are not that great at pc games as of late.

but i do not understand why this game in DX10 is not even 1/2 as good as far cry 2 is in DX10 mode. i wonder what gives and who fell asleep at the wheel on this project??

come on fix the game, even though this will be on deaf hears. since i am a veteran of ubi forums, back from the raven shield days.

but this is just another beta that went to the customer once again. i wonder who long will it be before they drop this game and move on to the next soon to be drop game by them?

now that would be a poll to remember!!

yep i get the same. only joined up to post this. just got a new 260 and was wondering if it was faulty.

Please someone pull your finger out on this one.

Thanks so much for responding in this thread GKane. Knowing that the problem has been acknowledged by Ubisoft staff means a lot. And I sincerely appreciate it.

03-23-2009, 05:22 PM
I just tried the 182.46 Beta driver from Nvidia. Doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

03-24-2009, 04:52 AM
Hello guys,

I've played the game and I've stumbled on the tearing and stuttering problem too.

What i've did is to disable the vsync option and that worked ok for my system.

The game runs smooth now.

Hope this helps.

03-24-2009, 06:29 PM
I admit the amount of stuttering is reduced with VSYNC off. However the stuttering is still very noticable. Additionally, I see an increased amount of graphic glitches on screen that shouldn't be happening and a good amount of tearing.

03-25-2009, 01:33 PM
i tried the new betas and still have a bad stuttering issue.

03-25-2009, 02:00 PM
reinstalled them and i get no stutter now.
interestingly my default view went back to 3rd person from cockpit also - couldnt say for sure if its the beta drivers that fixed it.

03-25-2009, 02:22 PM
went back into it to play - stuttering again, reboot - no stuttering. :/

03-25-2009, 03:05 PM

Mine also has issues with DX10. It will play DX9 as normal with FPS over 120 on high.

It occasionally freezes for anywhere up to a second and it also stutters and will crash out. FPS on DX10 is still good average 65.

Specs are

Intel 8400 not oc
MSI P35 NEO-FR-2 mobo
XFX 260 GTX Black Edition(182.06 driver)
4GB Ballistix 8500

Getting Extreme Stuttering before i can even access my profile. As soon as i press enter at the "Press Enter to Begin" screen. Then it is stutters/lags to the point where i think it takes about 5-9 minutes before it changes from the Press Enter screen to a black screen (as if going to the profiles page. Even if i press Ctrl+alt+del, it takes about 7 minutes to even see the task manager option. It eventually freezes completely and forced to turn off/reset my computer manually.

Now, sometimes i am able to get all the way to load a game up, just have to wait a minute after Press Enter screen, and it loads up. (Suttering and laggy menu, but none the less it starts up) but once the game loads up, i get stuck on the Loading screen, i hear the sound as if the game was playing, but video is still frozen on loading/waiting screen.

Graphical Distortions occur aswell as stuttering, usually occur together.
By graphical distortions imean some water splashes, explosions and smoke break into white lines, kind of like a pencil sketch of the object. Ghosting occurs of the distorted objects

It might help but we shouldn't have to and no AA at all looks worse than using DX9. My computer may not be grand but some listed here are top notch and should be able to handle everything this game can throw at it.

Look at NaSHoOo's PC, he should be running everything at max and still have power to spare.

I am getting the same problem, and I know i have a beast of a machine that can handle anything i throw at it. I am running the dx 9 version and have every thing max including AA8 and still get 100+ fps. I've been having the same problems and the black screen too. I've sent DXdiag, the dump file and a system file. After a week I got an email telling me it sounds like a compatibility issue with 64bit Vista. This is a 32 bit game. They advised me to reinstall my video driver and update my DX10 files from the gane DVD. I have the downloaded version that I ordered from Ubisoft. Guess what's not in the download? DX10 files. I'm still waiting for an answer to that situation.

I too have this rpoblem with ATI 1Gig 3870 X2 card over clocked

03-31-2009, 07:53 PM
I have terrible stuttering in DX10 mode as well. Occurs with both the 182.08 and the new betas 182.46.

FRAPs reports famerates of 50-100fps, but to actaully look at the game it's all jerky and stuttering. DX9 mode runs fine though.

im too..horrible stuttering in dx 10
in dx 9 the stuttering are less, but still there.

any driver and evga patch do not solves the problem.
i wait for the next ubi-patch.

By the way, maybe it's worth noting that, at least for me, the in-game benchmark seems perfectly smooth in DX10. Also the short cutscenes during missions are fine as well.

The DX10 stuttering problem only manifests during actual gameplay.

182.50 (WHQL) out now for nvidia cards. Fingers-crossed.

04-02-2009, 05:43 PM
the new driver smooth things out?

04-02-2009, 07:53 PM
Tried out the latest beta's, an improvement for sure, but not completely fixed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

04-02-2009, 10:02 PM
Right on d/l'n them now. Here's to hopin... bout tired of this glitchyness.

O and I tried 182.50 that didn't help at all... in fact made it slightly worse.

04-03-2009, 01:10 AM
As a note for others here... that beta driver helps ALOT. forgot the version it's the most recent one... released apr 02... still got issues but faaaar better than before.

04-03-2009, 01:16 AM
I concur, it is an improvement without a doubt.

Assuming Nvidia are aware of the problem, id say it looks like considering this improvement, that its the HAWX engine that needs fixing to solve it utterly.

I got the same stuttering problem in DX10 with HAWX. I've been testing it with in built benchmark tool, with everything maxed in DX10, with res. 1280x1024 noAA, and the results were 63FPS average, 150FPS maximum. But when I want to play the game, in some missions the game horribly stutters. It appears to be only in some missions, but it is really frustrating, in DX9, there's no problem with everything maxed 1600x1200 and 4xAA ( average fps 70 ).

My configuration :

Intel Core2 Duo E6600 ( 3,11Ghz, 1380Mhz FSB )
Gigabyte GA-945P DS3 ( rev.2.0 - Bios F6E )
4GB DDR 2 700Mhz (4x1GB modules - dual channel)
Gigabyte Nvidia 8800GT Extreme 512MB GDDR3 (1836/1715/700) - no OC ( FW 182.50 WHQL )
Onboard audio Realtek HD ( newest drivers )

Corsair 650W PSU
Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64

Thx for any suggestions.

I notice you guys running the intel cpu are haveing this problem? Im running amd and no shuttering at all. Are you guys running SLI? There was a performance issue with the SLI drivers, There was a fix for it on SLI ZONE sight a wile ago. They have a dienostic area in there of things to try to solve the problem.

04-09-2009, 02:10 PM
Any idea if they working on a patch for this issue?

04-15-2009, 02:28 AM
as stated earlier in the thread (read the thread)

yes, the developers are aware and investigating the issue and hoping to fix it in the next patch release.

I've seen issues with DX10 stuttering with the Tablet PC service. If you use a tablet, try disabling this service in Windows.

05-01-2009, 08:40 AM
I don't know if you call this stutter, but I am getting 2/AVG 2 FPS! on DX10, DX9 runs smooth on max detail. Runing on low settings and (800X600)in DX10 makes no difference. Get a black screen on game load. Takes 3 time as long to load a mission compared to DX9 (I don't know if thats normal for my spec)

Hawx 1.01 - Downloaded version
Vista 32-bit SP2 (SP2 made no diff)

AHA!!! I run an HP TouchSmart IQ506. Basically, the entire computer is a 22" touchscreen monitor. My DX10 was unusable so I wrote it off to the onboard GPU (NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS). 4 gigs of RAM on Vista64 should be more than enough, but it's the GPU that takes the big hits, right?

I hardly ever use the touchscreen features anyway. You end up with gorilla arms trying to poke and prod a vertical surface, LMAO!

I get stuttering to the game in Dx10 is totally unplayable though Dx9 is totally fine. My specs are:

Hawx version 1.01 (Downloaded Version)
Asus P6T motherboard
Core I7 920(Air cooled and not overclocked)
12 GB Ram DDR3
Evga Geforce GTX 260 (air cooled and not overclocked)
Nvidia driver: 185.81
Auzentech 7.1 Forte
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 X64

AMD Phenom II 940 Black (not overclocked)
BFGTech 9600GT OC (Factory OC)
Nvidia Driver 182.50
Vista Home Premium X64 w/SP1

The demo ran smooth as butter, and the Game was fine on release. About a week or 2 after release, the game stutters any time there is jamming or I switch to or from off mode or cockpit view, and generally performs terribly. Not sure if this is the same problem or not as I am getting some graphical artifacting as well. I'm pretty sure my video card is fine as I have no issues in any other game.

well i now have a EVGA GTX 285 SC with or with out it over clock and the gfx setting set to max i can play this with no problem and no stuttering in DX10 mode.

i am using the 185.81 driver right now as well. and i have all ways set via nvidia control panel vsynce to off and Texture filtering to high performance and single gpu display.

since i stop running sli a few yrs ago when i got the 8800gtx and now this 285. which is a great card BTW.

but now i have a new problem which i am not alone on. and i wonder if anyone else has seen it before. has anyone else has had a windows pop up for USB device failed error box come up while playing this yet?

if so i wonder why it does this since it stay there till you either stop playing the game and click ok on it or just alt+tab to it so you can close it out while still playing it yet with out closing out your game.

or should i start a new thread on this ?

Vista Home Premium 64bit

Any other info you need about my system and I'll be happy to oblige.

I have the same issue. Not just 60 fps + stuttering, but literally 2 fps in DX1o mode no matter the settings. I am running 64-bit vista SP2. DirectX 9 mode works fine. I purchased the game from Direct2Drive as a digital download.

My specs are
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Mobo
Q9650 - 4GB Ram
ATI 4890 Video card Running Catalyst 9.5 drivers. I had a 2900XT on catalyst 9.3 drivers and experienced the same issue. I replaced it with the 4890 and still have the same result.

Are the devs looking at the 70fps + stuttering issue and the 2fps unplayable issue as separate issues or as one?

There are 1 or 2 other people in this thread with the 2FPS issue and few more in the main bug report thread.

EDIT: The problem has been resolved. It was presenting when I entered the game in dx10 mode and used the "test settings" demo in the video settings. As soon as I entered a mission, the graphics were fine. After running a mission in dx10, the test demo works flawlessly now as well.

I get the same issue. GTX295 190.62 drivers

2 FPS in DX 10 mode regardless of the settings or resolution while DX9 is flawless with 8 x aa 2560x1600 Max settings

Try this go to the Start menu, and choose Run (Start Search if you're using Windows Vista). Delete anything on the Open line that you'll find there, and type in the word MSCONFIG. Click on OK, and that will bring up a program called the System Configuration Utility.

Look down the list of startup items (not the tab labeled Startup), and choose Selective Startup (if it is not already selected). If you don't see this, make sure you've clicked on General, near the top of the window. Once you've chosen Selective Startup, uncheck 'Load Startup Items', and leave 'Process System.INI file' and 'Process Win.INI file' checked. Once you're done here, click OK, and let it reboot your computer.

Your Windows environment may look different and you may get an error relating to your sound device not working (ignore this for now). Try running the game again. If the game loads and seems to be working, the problem is most likely related to one or more programs you have scheduled to load with Windows. You can then revert the settings back the way they were, and in a trial and error fashion, disable some programs using the startup tab (in the msconfig utility) to try to find the culprit.

If this doesn't do the trick, if any of you are using a tablet this could possible cause this performance issue. Try disabling the tabletinput services. Also, try disabling the antialiasing and anosotropic settings in the Nvidia Control Panel or Catalyst Control Center for ATI users.

i had this issue of only getting 2fps and turning off voice commands fixed my issues, make sure after you turn it off you hit enter to accept changes instead of escape or it doesn't work, try running in xp sp2 compatibility mode, also for some odd reason voice commands resets itself to "active" every time i restart the game, just a heads up although it might not for you

specs are
msi k9n2 sli platinum
amd phenom x4 @ 3hz
nvidia gtx 275 (drivers: 191.03 beta)
4gb ocz reaper @800mhz
wd velociraptor 300gb
xfi titanium fatal1ty pro

Confirmed! Turning off voice command caused the performance to jump from 2fps to 30fps in the Test Performance area.

Test Settings that now get 30fps are:
8x AA, 1920x1080, 60Hz, Vsync and full screen on.
Everything in advanced tab set to High or On.

In DirectX 10 tab
Shadows High, Sun shafts High, Ambient occlusion (SSAO) set to Very High. My system doesn't support DX 10.1 so that is currently off.

the 260 nvidia card is a dx_9 card its a jobbercard it will do dx_10 but its not the best.. its an apps card not a gamer card...it will have to skip a lot of frames to work.. the 8600 series is the same

I starting replaying HAWX 1 - in order to evaluate whether I might want to buy HAWX 2 since it's on sale on Steam - and I was very disappointed to find the DX10 stuttering issue is still there.

I know the developers never released patch for it, but I thought it might have been fixed in a newer driver; no such luck.

I'm running the game on a GTX 570 now, and FRAPS never reports the framerate dropping below 60fps (if I run without vsync, the true framerate is 150+fps) - yet the movement will randomly become all juddery and jerky. It really does make DX10 mode alomst unplayable. DX9 mode is smooth as it's always been.

It's extremely disappointing that the developers said they were going to fix this and never did. Not sure if I should get HAWX 2 because of this.
