View Full Version : Check your career after death.

Lots of you may already know about this, and if you do you are in trouble for not telling me earlier!!

When the game came out i used to complain about the fact that when dead all you got was the "Dead" screen and you couldnt find anything out about your career. I often asked here "mods! Please atleast let us wonder round the office after we are dead!" well all i got was a stony silence.

Today when i just got back from work i was messing about looking at the saves from my last career when i died, and i tried to load the dead save up for a laugh. It said "Your dead" but loaded to the career description page, then when i exited this i was in the office http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif So i could look round at the top tonnage kings, check out the patrols i had done, look at my medals ect. I could even go to the uboat screen.

Then being really curious i clicked on the map and it said "not enough crew" hmm i thought, went to the crew locker (how do they fit all those men in that tiny cabinet?) and started dragging them into my destroyed sub. Well i filled it and then could go on patrol http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Next i quit out to see what happened and it treated me like i was back alive again, but the thing was at the end of the patrol my uboat was empty of crew again, so i had to fill it for the next one. This "invincible sub" isnt much use i know because of the crew vanishing, just interesting i thought.

But the main point of my post was, you can go look round the office when dead, and check all the info.

Hope thats of interest to someone! Food time! *Runs off for his pasta*

VERY nice to know, indeed! I was actually wondering that myself. I was curious to go look into the late Helmut Schiller's file to check a few things but didn't want to mess with the fact that he was lost at sea.

Thanks Dom! Now if only I could get him to show up in the Aces list. Can I?

You can look at the aces list, it shows the list how it was when he died though, and with him listed at the bottom (much as it did in game)

I was hoping it would show the final scores for everyone but not so lucky http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif But its better then nothing!

I suppose I could take his stats and manually add him to the list, if I knew where this list was. I'll give it a look. It might become customary for me when I lose a Captain, which I don't anticipate being a regular occurance.

Ahh i get ya. You mean for your captain to be in the top scorers list forever!

yeah a cool idea. You can do this if you have the knowledge.

The file is in the data/cfg folder

UboatAces.cfg But you would either have to add them in the first month with their full value, then they will always be there with the top score. Or enter them in the last month of the war with the top score, but they would not appear unless you completed the war.

Otherwise it means going through and entering the tonnages when you got them which may be a lot of effort if you lasted a lot of months!

I dont really understand messing with teh .cfg files so cant help you with the details of that aces file. But it looks pretty straightforward apart from the NBval thingy in there. Whatever that is...

Yes indeedy - very cool - thanks for the idea!

I just finished adding about 8 patrols worth of my first and most successful Kaleun's career sinking stats into the file you mentioned (data\cfg\UboatAces.cfg) and sure enough, he now shows up on the in-game U-boat Aces list with the proper tonnage totalled up to the relevant date (loaded up my other career's final patrol to check it out) - SO COOL !! Now that I know it works I'll have to finish putting the rest of his sinkings on the list http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Turns out that the "NBval thingy" is just the number of ships sunk by that Kaleun, and this whole process/mod is very easy (though somewhat time consuming for a very successful Kaleun) to do. You just add your Kaleun(s) at the end of the existing list in that file, using the same format used for the other Kaleuns already on the list - just be sure to give your guy(s) the next "ITEM" number larger than the previous last guy on the list, and also increment the number at the very beginning of the file (i.e., the number in the first 2 lines that read "[INIT] Nb=32" in the stock file) by the number of extra Kaleuns you add to the list. Thus, the "Nb=" value in the second line of the file would increase to "33" if you add one Kaleun to the list, etc.

Fortunately, as long as you keep a backup copy of your changed file you should only have to do these data entries into the file once, and your personal Kaleuns should show up in the U-boat Aces hall of fame list for every other career you play http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Very cool way to preserve the memory of your favorite/most successful Kaleuns - thanks again for the idea.

Good luck, and good hunting!

[edit - BTW - you can find the details (dates, tonnages) of your sinkings in the My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\careers\[name of your kaleun]\log_0-n.cfg files]

The access to careers after they are completed is only half-implemented. It's either an unfinished feature or a fortuitous bug. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The best way to get career info post-career is by using SH3 Commander. Not only will it give you all the career stats, but it will auto-generate a unique pre-career history, and for those who survive the war a post-career history too.

SH3 Commander is available here: (http://www.beerymod.com/SH3Cmdr2.7z).

Here's a screenshot of the personnel file of one of my commanders:

All of this info is randomly auto-generated. No writing fictitious career histories - SH3 Commander does it all for you. The post-career histories are based on the real life histories of the top U-boat commanders. In fact, all the extra info that is generated, from birthplaces, to photos, to post-career info, is all based on real commanders, so you always get a realistic life story for your commander.

I still haven't gotten around to messing with SH3 Commander, though it does look like it does some pretty neat stuff. Maybe I'll give it a whirl since I'm just now firing up RUB1.44 as well for a new career.

Does it give you any nice, automated way to put your Kaleun's results into the in-game Aces list, or is something like the manual way described above the only way to make that happen?

Sweet! I got it working! And I'm not even on the bottom of the list (although I'm second to last). It definitely helps to update it after each patrol. Just don't activate it at the top until another patrol is started.

OR, you could get the SH3 Commander, which does indeed look very nice. It has a lot of extras as well. Nicely done!

If you click on the tonnage score at the bottom of the personnel file it takes you to the list of aces at the time your commander retired. If your commander scores high enough, he takes his place in the list in order of tonnage. It's not an 'in-game' list, but it's the next best thing. See below:

That looks pretty cool, and I definitely think I'll have to give SH3 Commander a try while I'm starting this latest career.

However, I really like being able to put your previous Kaleuns on the in-game Aces list as well - it's kind of like playing against the "ghost car" of your best lap in some racing games - every time you get back to port you get to see how your current Kaleun is faring not only against the real Kaleuns but also against your best previous careers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here - the way I figured this would work is that you would only put the sinking data for your dead/retired Kaleuns (and probably only your pretty good ones at that) into the Aces list file - that only gets done once, after those Kaleuns are no longer active, so there shouldn't have to be any updating after patrols or anything like that (as you go through new careers/patrols with new Kaleuns, the game should use that data to put those dead/retired guys at the right place on the list with the right tonnage each time without you having to do anything else).

Cool Beery, does this commander thing mess with any other aspects of the game? The description didnt really say, and how do you install it#? When i downloaded it the filetype was strange. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

What I meant was that it's easier for me to add new sunken ships to the list after a patrol on an ongoing basis, rather than taking up 15 minutes to go down the entire list after a career is over. It's just a personal preference. Then, when the career is over, if I think the Captain is worthy, I include him by adding another number to the code at the top:

[INIT]
Nb=33
