3400+ AMD Athalon 64
2.40GHz
1.5GB RAM
AGP slot

Narrowed it down to either the Radeon X1600 pro or the Radeon X800GTO. Both seem to have similar stats and are in the $160-180 price range and have great reviews at Newegg. I'll be upgrading to a 480w PS at the same time.

Anybody wanna help me with some input or maybe another choice?

Mainly playing Pacific Fighters and LOMAC.

Thanks so much. Tony.

I run a HIS X850XT AGP and its excellent

but maybe a bit outside your price range

have you looked at toms hardware VGA charts ??

That is very tempting, but yes, a bit out of my price range. May be worth it though; I bought a Radeon 9550 thinking that would be sufficient... all it did was fuel my new addiction! Havn't had it for a month yet, and I already need more. Maybe getting THAT card would just pasify me in one fell swoop, instead of going through that again so soon.

Still VERY open to suggestions.

PS: yeah I've looked over those charts briefly. May have to go back and check 'em out again.

Whichever you get - make sure you choose a type with the Arctic Cooler-type heatsink/fan and ducting to the exterior of the case. I have a similar HIS x850xtPE and it's a good way to go. The cooler takes away hot air that would otherwise rise up and get blown across CPU heatsink. It don't sound like much - but it lowers case temps a few degrees *C and that is always useful - plus of course, it does a pretty good job of cooling the graphics card http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Depending on where you live, the AGP versions are getting harder to find. The UK seems pretty dry but I spotted the 850xt on NewEgg at $260+US. On order: due in on the 12th of this month.

Do you guys think the Radeon X850XT might be too much card for my system?

IMHO the X850 will be fine in your system, you could even go for a more powerful card. I run an EAX800XTX and a Athlon 64 3200+ with 2gb Ram, and can run FB/PF with perfect detail and 4x AF/4x AA. Go for whatever you can afford.

I have the X800xtpe 256, 3GhzHT800fsb, 1.5Gb ram.
My own opinion is if your system will run the 850 or higher and you can afford it, go for it...if like me this is the PCs final upgrade, not including breakdowns...then its worth it...anything , including and above the X800xtpe will not disappoint, however, its annoying knowing you've just coughed up all that money when you could have squeezed a little bit more out of it.

Well I just orderd the Radeon X850xt AGP for $239 at Newegg. Also grabbed a 450w PS to replace the stock 250w that came with the comp. So, going from the Radeon 9550 to this one should be a DRAMATIC improvement... better be for that much scratch. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You are really going to like the new card. Expect a 15-20 FPS increase in the BD track, along with dialing up the eye candy without a FPS hit. Went from a 9800 Pro to the card you just ordered, and am very very happy. You may want to check Coastie's webpage to get an idea of the settings the card can handle.

6800GS or X800 Pro/GTO, probably the best bargains right now at around $80-100

Both card much much faster than your 9550 and plenty enough for FB/PF on perfect with your system.

I think you're off on your pricing... maybe that cheap for PCI-E, but considerably more for the AGP versions.

-all irrelevant anyway, the card's on the way.

When you get the new card, uninstall the drivers and reboot, letting windows install the svga driver. Shutdown, switch cards, and reboot. Install drivers. Your system won't like a change of cards without uninstalling the drivers first.

Also, for anyone interested, here is the last issue of video cards supporting AGP.

OK got the X850XT in and it's working nicely. I can run in Open GL on perfect settings but it gets a bit notchy at times when lots of stuff is going on. This is unacceptable to me, so perfect settings are out I guess. Flight has got to be close to seemless for me or it just bugs me. BUT, I can run in DirectX on super high rez and it looks really good and seems to run faster on DX than OpenGL. Don't know why. Really nice card... I was expecting a bit more performance, but it's very good. The fan on the card is louder than I'd like, but not unbearable. I'm happy with my graphics/performance now, finally and can concentrate on honing my pilot skills. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That's all, just thought I'd update.

You should be able to tweak some settings to get better perfect mode performance. There are some guides around on what some of them are.

DirectX runs faster because it can't do most of what OpenGL is doing so its less graphically intensive. OpenGL is by far the better choice.
