View Full Version : Devestator looks great, but...

as all 129 Devastators were built and originally painter with the SR-2B paint schemes(yellow wings, carrier tail colors, flying sections on cowlings), the interiors should be left natural aluminum and not interior green.

The Devastator web page suggests that the interior top surfaces may have been also painted in the overall blue color as the Vindicators were. See the last surviving 'Wind Indicator" here.

The appearance of the skin on the model leads me to believe it's an incomplete work. Looks like the finishing touches haven't been added.

12-03-2004, 05:19 PM
Are you implying that you would like to see the Devestator painted in pre-war colors?!!! The ones that fought in Coral Sea, and Midway were painted as is depicted in the screen shot. Where have you seen any shots of the interior?

12-03-2004, 05:43 PM
Everyone just back off.

12-03-2004, 05:51 PM
Looks awesome. Very nice, indeed.

Check out Pat Tillman's Devastator Squadrons of WWII (Osprey). More of a history of the type than a war chronology as there were only 129 of these and they were pulled after Midway.

Interiors are silver. The folded wing joints and doors were overpainted topside blue as they never had chromate/interior green applied.

I am not suggesting pre-war schemes. It is that these were pre war aircraft which were re-painted in blue over grey in 1941. So no interior or chromate green. External surfaces got shot with blue. See Vindicator link in open comments. Click on a couple of the shots you will see all of the topsides are overpainted in blue and it's aluminum below deck. Vindicator, like the TBD were pre-war repainted.

12-03-2004, 06:15 PM
Sorry but you are wrong. They had green insides once the Pre-War schemes were replaced. The interior color is not going to change because it is accurate.

I'm Intriqued by the set of door under nose section' http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/354.gif with those?

12-03-2004, 06:47 PM
For me it could be RED inside with a discrete writing "Za Stalinu" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif and it still would look GREAT for me! Very nice job! Thank you!

@ Ikemling:

"In combat, the bombardier lay prone just behind the engine, peering through a window in the bottom of the fuselage to release the torpedo or bomb."

Yeah yeah bring that baby on in flyable!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Torp planes are gonna bust a new hole in this sims @rse!!!

12-03-2004, 07:57 PM
Beautiful work Burnin...any chance of her ending up as a flyable?

12-03-2004, 08:01 PM
**** Infopop!!!

"server not found" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

OK, again.

What's that "bomb bay" for. Seems not to be a bomb bay, but I dunno what it's for.

BTW, nice loadout http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

12 100lb
2 250lb
1 500lb

or something like that... Ground pounder, 8 attack runs http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif
Still dreaming of such loadouts for my trusty 110...

12-03-2004, 08:16 PM
See the attached link.

12-03-2004, 08:53 PM
@ Burner:

What is happ'nin with the aft stab's on the torp? Seems like they get clipped when they get near the under fuselage.Should there be mini-doors there to accomodate the stab's?The bombs too to some degree.

12-03-2004, 09:49 PM
There is a cutout/recess just like in the real bird to accomodate the fins.

12-03-2004, 10:58 PM
I must say I don't really care if it's painted perfectly accurately or not. It isn't going to be flyable anyway. Or is it?? Still I ain't gonna sweat a tiny thing like the color of paint it has.
Who cares.................just don't paint it pink or chartruese. Then I might care.

12-03-2004, 11:00 PM
operation petticoat comes to mind!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

the model looks descent quality so far but my one gripe is the engine texture which looks pretty harsh.

Maybe you can have a larger 512kx512k engine texture off of the void.

the japanese models all look amazing in the dev update.

My question is do these plane on being flyable i noticed they are ai only. isnt it a major waste of time adding more ai only? To me i think it would be more helpful to the game to start making in game ai flyable.I guess its part of the process but theres so many in game ai only with fantastic models that have been so since fb came out.

with Fighters as AI only you are propably right (an offline only player is perhaps other opinion as he wants more different foes).
but BOmbers/attackplanes as AI planes are always welcome ! for offline AND online historical COOP missions . to attack the "correct" plane in a fighters is an important point in historical meanings.

The Devastator looks great, but...

wait a minute...

THAT DEVASTATOR LOOKS GREAT! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Awesome work, lad. And the colors are totally correct. That's the way a Coral Sea/Midway TBD must look. With green inners, of course.

We want the others. We need this. Even if it's only AI, it has to be there.

Thank you! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

mmmmm nice - ever thought of modelling a Firefly :-)

12-04-2004, 06:51 AM
That's a beautiful model, Burnin. Very much looking forward to having it in the game. Thanks for your work.

12-04-2004, 06:57 AM
ALL my US pacific planes cockpits are painted with exactly that tone of interior green, i use HUMBROL for the job.
Your DEVASTATOR looks flyable to me or am i.... and congratulations on a another fabulous piece of art.

Found a nice site with some very good photos:

So that's an aim door...

12-04-2004, 09:47 AM
Burnin,the model is fantastic!

However, several noted naval aviation wonks point out that interiors, below the upper decking, remained painted Aluminum color. Even the TBD site we all have pointed to. See the annotated instructions for the Monogram kit on that page.

Here's why:

1. All 129 Devastators were built pre-war to be in the aluminum/yellow wing configuration. This was long before the naval specification of interior green.

2. These were probably painted twice after that: First, neutrality gray, then medium blue.

3. Paint jobs likely took place at a Naval Air Station. There are photos of the Blue Devastators from USS Yorktown along side Big Y's gray dauntlesses. So, they were painting many aircraft at once.

4. The devastator's interior is full of wires, equipment and swiches. Why go through the time and expense masking and painting the interior green when there is already a protective coating of paint applied.

5. Barrett Tillman's Osprey book: "TBD Devastator Units of the US Navy' has color photos of blue Devastators on the deck. The inner wing folds were painted blue (not green), previously they were aluminum. Landing gears and wheel hubs are gray, I would assume inside of gear bays and doors were either grey or left aluminum.

6. Check out photo linked in previous post, and below. It is a Tighar photo of plane found in a lagoon in the Marshall Islands. The lower cockpit well is silver and you can see the blue top sides. The greenish panel is sea life on the lower black panel. Compare with factory photo to right.

7. The Pensacola restoration of the Vindicator is painted in the manner I am suggesting. These are both 'Yellow Wing' planes that were on hand in '42.

8. I have not seen anything conclusive stating that the Navy went to the trouble to repaint the interiors on prewar aircraft.

Why did I make a fuss on this regarding an otherwise beautiful model?

I think it would be ultimate compliment to the game and the modelers if a Barrett Tillman or museum personal in NAS Pensacola played the game, flew the TBD and said, "Wow, they even remembered to keep the inners aluminum."

12-04-2004, 10:27 AM
I'm glad you guys like the Deva. If you don't like the cockpit color you can change it once it is in the game. The textures are all changeable just like on any other aircraft in game. And I made it especially easy to re-paint the cockpit if you so choose.

12-04-2004, 10:53 AM
Thanks for your work Burnin. It is a beautiful model of a historically important aircraft.

Can't wait to see her in game.

12-04-2004, 11:17 AM
@ Burnin:

would it be possible fer a mini walk around in video??

12-04-2004, 11:40 AM

Oooohhh nice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think the Devastator is an ugly plane but you've done wonders for it anyways. It looks VERY good and very professionally done! I may not like the way it looks but the job thats been done to make it part of this game is commendable.

Well done sir!

12-06-2004, 07:26 PM
an essential AI plane...

12-06-2004, 07:47 PM
Indeed, Coral Sea and Midway just aren't right without it.

Kudos, Burnin. Well done.
