View Full Version : hey whats wrong with the I-16

i tried it again in PF and the cannons seems stronger then 4 20 mm or something, i outturn every plane, killing 4 spits without a problem, its crazy, i take planes with 2 20mm and 2 30mm and have more problem to bring other planes down, its **** uber plane now...

Surely you noticed the negative `g` it`s the one thing that puts most people off.

The Soviet 20mm cannon was the most powerful of any aircraft in frontline service with any nation on the eve of WWII: It had a high rate of fire and was very reliable with punch. Some were purchased by the Chinese to fight the Japanese with good results.

None were used against Spitfires, so why are you fighting them?

Maybe you should come off easy engine management and fly against 4 Veteran to Ace 109s and see how easy you find it then.

11-10-2004, 01:21 PM
i killed all planes with full realism, even a b29 is not a problem, 109 is a joke. stall is no problem with good hands, and engine is no problem...

Well with your success rate mate I would get your butt online and start unleashing a can of woop azz on some human pilots http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

> i outturn every plane

This is one of the tighter-turners in the game; a full 2 seconds faster at turning than a lot of the bigger, faster fighters. For most fighters, if you find them low and slow you can get on their six quite easily.

However, top speeds are nearly 100kmph slower than other fighters, and ceiling is lower. Most fighters, if they aren't drawn into a turn-fight with you, will kick your pants everytime by employing BnZ-like tactics and extending away quickly to a safe height. I think the AI is probably too easily led into a turn fight?

It's a great plane for protecting ground targets from straffing, but I find not so strong when patrolling a sector or doing other duties. The current PF 'porked flight modelling at low speed' might have given it an even greater advantage at low speeds? I'm sure if this is the case it will be changed in the patch.

The 20mm ShVAKs are the same as in several other planes, so they should be modelled the same I think. But maybe with the lower speed and tighter turn, your convergence-point and 'leading' was working better for you?

I don't know if DGen is used to create the 'quick mission builder' missions, but if it is, you need to put:
into your conf.ini file to get the best out of the AI. Wouldn't hurt anyway. Maybe also try fighting AI Brewsters (B-239), which are in a similar 'class'. Zeros can turn really well too, so you could try them as opponents.

I have a pair of green suede topsiders, and when I put them on my feet...I am invisible. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif...thatsright...in-visible.

Let's see:

Uber cannons. I think this is the only thing that is wrong with the I-16. otherwise, It is really good modelled. It IS maneuveable, it should be. It
looks great in a Revi http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif , burns nicely(ok, that is undermodelled, wasn't it made of WOOD, CLOTH, PAINT and VARNISH?)Considering my youth years, this is stuff that burns. And before you tell me, I know the game engine does not allow for such DM.

I'm just sayin' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ...

Love it.

the I-16 is a no brainer plane in early war its not even fun to fight in it.

try to fight it in an Emil on equal terms
the only time you can kill an I-16 is when they dont see you.

im amazed how good that little ugly green laser thing is ,well with anti grav and kryptonite Energy anything is possible http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

11-11-2004, 12:59 AM
hehe http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif I~16 is BACK

Yes I~16 could beat Email at sea level where the Old Timer Noobs fly Emails to get socially acceptable screenshots.

11-11-2004, 08:31 AM
This is one of the reasons why the AI planes should be coded and forced to fly at their top speed in the combat zone. So not every single aircraft will slow down to try and turn into their enemy.

That way the 109 canuse its speed against the turn fighters.

See these threads........

well im not a fan over I-16 but testing it again its **** uber plane, when i tried it in forgotten battle i hade a lot of problem killing plane with andless showers of bullets, now, BAM, hurricane IIc cant even bring planes down with so fiew bullets. it is slow, but speed is for people who run away...

hey whats wrong with the I-16

1. That crappy manual landing gear that tires my arm out every time I fly it. I mean 42 cranks? come on. How about hydraulics already?

2. That stupid gravity-fed carburetor. I can't even get a slight redout in this crate.

3. An open cockpit...in Russia? Hello!!!

Those would be my top three.

Well, I`ve seen nothing so far except a general kind of hatred for the I-16. No evidence it`s overpowered, just supposition that the gun too strong. I seem to have been the only guy who`s so far quoted any historical evidence on this (my first quote was from Janes WWII aircraft).

So just for those of who can`t abide the I16 meet a couple of fiends of mine...

They`re laughing at the aggro they`re gonna bring to ya butts!

I-16 lives!

You should not forget that I-16 was built without an order form the VVS. They had already "upgraded" to I-15(I-153 older brother, without the retractible gear and the gull wing), So Polikarpov decided to go in his own way... The I-16 was designed in the 30s. Ever wondered why the cannon armed I-16(how many did you say were produced? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif) was type 24?
To get a more clear view, what is the latest Version of F-16? Block 60 or block 70 sumthin'?

about 1.
Widcat anyone? I always thought it would be more difficult to retract the gear while balancing on the edge of stall, about 3000 ft of shark infested water below you and an 800 ft warship behind hoping you will ditch so she can ram ya...

You know, I necer figured it out, how did they manage to do that on a radial engine?... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

and number 3:
The I-16 type 29 was supposed to have a hot waterr heating system, but due to the still open cockpit its effect was limited. also, the higher probability that sparkles from the coals could cause fire stopped the modification from reaching production. During the war, a special front modificaton of the I-16(gch- from the russian letters of "hot tea") allowed the pilot some heating. a tea-urn was installed under the pilot seat, making it possible for the pilot to warm himself both internally and externally. Usually the letters "gch" would be omitted in the designation."

The I-16 and Hurricane IIc are good furball cherry picking planes when you catch guys with their pants down, low and slow. Doesn't take much more than a tap or two of the trigger and they're taking a dirt nap.

Beyond that, online, they aren't real solid performers.

About 7000 and that is for the whole I-16 production http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

your poem is silly

I wonder if you are able to create a better one?
AFAIK, I never wanted your opinion about it. So with all due respect to your flying skills...

if you are the girls in the picture its surley a fine poem http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif anyway, i think i have to take some things back, I-16 is not that uber, it was the spits that sucked

Haven't tried the Rata (I-16) out yet in PF theatre, but I always enjoyed flying her in my Russian offline campaigns. Online she can be very good, especially if the server sticks to early war stuff.

But in all fairness, she's no uber plane. Her strength is turn rate and toughness, which are balanced by her lack of speed and rear visibility problems. BnZ tactics and aiming at the cockpit or engine (not fuselage) brings her down easy enough.

I love flying her with rockets to help compensate for the lack of speed. Great plane!

Speaking of early Russian planes and PF, here's a pic I posted over at my squad's forum about the TB. She's got magically wings! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif (I believe this problem has already been posted; just another variation of the detection issue).

And yes she easily takes off from a carrier. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

11-12-2004, 01:46 PM
Can you do that with the SPB version?

I get a kick out of how people compare the I-16s to other "early war" 1940/41 planes, and tell us how it comes up short.

The I-16 is more of a Spanish Civil War plane; thats when it was state of the art. It gets compared to Bf 109Es, but if only we could compare it to earlier 109s instead.

11-12-2004, 03:55 PM
i thought it got way worse in pf, like max dive speed of 360mph, and all controls stiffen up
i want my rata back

11-12-2004, 05:14 PM
I~16 and Ki~43 could be interesting match

11-12-2004, 06:46 PM
what did you say about type 24 cannons ? as far as i know, real type 24 (or atleast 99 % of them) had 4x SHKAS as standard armament, not 2x shkas/2x Shvak we have in the game.. the cannon variant type 24 saw no mass production, it was tested on few type24s as fieldmods, but it was kinda rare... the next version type 24 brought the Shvaks as standard armament..
