I am quite good with LockOn, but I am bit bored with missiles and BVR dogfight.

Which editions of IL2 should I buy in order to be compatible with the most of IL2 crowd?

The Nuggets Guide is great, but to simply answer your question, get Il2-46. It is the latest version and includes all previous versions on one disk.
If you look around you can probably get a copy for around $10.00 US.

You can download the game from ubisoft for $10:

Once patched to at least 4.08m (though you will want to eventually patch to 4.09m) you can start playing and getting used to the controls etc.

For some fun and eduction I recommend downloading the Training Missions linked to by my signature. They are organized by difficulty and hence fit any player's skill level (with the exception of the top levels of player skill).

Good luck DROBNJAK1960.
