Okay, I need some help.

What ways do you find useful to check your six o'clock when flying on "full switch" servers. Preferably some way that doesn't cause me to loose drastic amounts of speed in the process.

Thanks

1 word: "wingman" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

without wingman, gentle slide slipping the plane for dead astern and high 6 checks

for low 6... hmmm. .. maybe a gentle barell roll, but you will lose speed with this... alternatively have enough speed, and you don't have to worry about your low 6

edit: if you are in a coop mission/server, IIRC you can also ask your AI wingman to check your 6, with the 'Cover me' command (Tab-1-1), he will tell you, if there is a bandit around you

this feature is very neat, I don't agree with all the AI-bashing http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There is no better way to check your six than to fly with a wingman and have him check it (while you check his, you should be flying more or less side by side and between 200-500m apart)

Track IR! Then kick the rudder and do a few quick turns to the left and right. Mix it up and dive then climb a tad. If you're really paranoid do a real quick 180 and then another to put you back on course. Never fly straight for more than 30 seconds (and that's a little too long maybe).

Or...fly the SBD (it won the war y'know... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif)

Do a crazy Ivan and fly in a circle. Or as suggested, kick some rudder to give you some more view to the rear. Sometimes I roll the plan over and make a loop. If someone is there when you look up, start the split-s!

Why do you only have on hour clock? Mine has 12 hours graded on it.

Kick your rudder left and right and look at the opposite way you're sliding. (e.g., apply left rudder, look at your 5 O'clock [Rear Right])
The absolute best way though, is to buddy up with a friend and coordinate. Also, don't keep focused on your panel/gunsight. Head on a swivel is essential to SA, which means TrackIR (if you have the money) or Freelook (if you have a webcam, and nigh limitless patience) is a big must, like a good joystick.

Wait for BOB and realistic head movement (6 DOF)---you can't check six in this game without resorting to ridiculous expedients. I wag my tail, dip my wings, and pray.

Thanks all for the replies. Certainly flying with a wingman is beneficial for a multitude of reasons. I appreciate all the suggestions.

Man knows what he's talking about.
I was on his tail and gaining when he politely asked his wingman to cover his... tail. Suffice is to say in less than a minute my riddled Jug was plummeting to Earth.

You attacked a plane that had a wingman?

No, he didn't know it was there. My way is to ask the AI to attack the enemy amd he breaks away, but then I drag the enemy and ask the AI to cover me again. Drag and bag - with AI. It works sometimes very well.

Mirror truly your best bet, or resort to the Yak-3 which has the best rear vis in the game.

I first attacked rnzoli's FW-190 then I lost visual on him in hard manouver... then I regain it. But that wasn't his FW-190 but his wingman. I quickly catched him and started to pump some lead he was fuel leaking all over the place. Then - blue tracer and black screen.

I was unaware of the second FW-190 since we have isolated ourselves from mass furball.

so when do you come again for taking your well-deserved revenge on me? Don't know, I'm not much in online virtual skies lately (working on my P-38 skin mostly). But you have created dam fine server. I would dare to say that I had better fun on your server than on most others.
And I don't say that out of decency.

That P-51Ds vs. D0-335s map is awesome... Falken and me kicked some serious Pfeil @rse. Good fun http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Mirrors kill framerates faster than Samuel L. Jackson kills snakes (on a plane!).

Is barely surviving on a Dell (which, despite carrying parts from 2003/2004, only gets 50 FPS in BF1942 on lowest settings) with only a gig of RAM and an outdated FX5200 challenged enough for you? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

OOPS! Just realized that I made a mistake on my Check 6 tips.
When you slide your plane, look in the direction you're moving the rudder. So, if you apply left rudder, look towards your 8 O'Clock, or rear-left.

Enzo Ferrari used to tell his drivers "don't worry who's behind you."

Maybe that's why the old Ferrari race cars had crummy mirrors.

Not much help for the original post, but it was a tidbit of racing stuff.

After many, many, many hours of online play, I've found that looking behind me (in the virtual sense) is the best way of checking my 6.

Here's an AI question.

Sometimes when I am flying offline, and there is an AI enemy behind me, my wingman, who is behind the enemy fighter that is behind me, does Jack Scheisse!? WTF?

He informs me of the danger but doesn't make any effort to even shoot the bandit down. Sometimes, I get so pissed with my AI wingmen, I shoot them down myself. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
