While I think it's a good idea to associate with IL-2 on the packaging (from the creator of IL-2 Sturmovik or some such thing), it would be kinda strange to name it after a plane that will not be making an appearance in the game.

Guess they couldn't resist hitching a ride on the Il2 name, understandable though.

EDIT: Might it be the Russian name? Russian games frequently have different names in Russia then they do in the rest of the world. Or has it been confirmed that this is gonna be its one and only name?

From what Oleg says over at the 1C forum, the name is still being negotiated with the publisher (he's not said who this is yet). I'd say wait and see...

being suspicious by nature, my real concern is that the name change suggests a limited scope for the sim

You do realize that this will be only the first installment in a multi year run for the new sim?

I take it by your join date that you have no recollection of the original release of IL2 back in 2001. It was the same thing. Only Russian Front, limited plane set, expanded to other theaters over time.

The vast array of aircraft we enjoy in IL2/1946 took years to build up.

Nothing good happens overnight.

Hi Terry http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It's me, Chris. You did playtesting for me on WTCF. I had to get a new username and I hardly ever post here

Yes, of course I do know all that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. The sim's possible name change just makes me wonder. Sure, it took years to get that stuff, but that's also partially my concern too. Sims aren't money-makers compared to other games. My suspicious nature makes me wonder- if Ubi is the publisher, are they setting themselves up by preparing to cut things off at the first installment if they don't see enough revenue, despite Oleg's intentions. Plus, if Oleg wants to ditch them later, they have published the first installemnt and it can stand alone, precluding Oleg from possibly using another distributor and/or making him unable to get somebody to distribute add-ons for a game they don't have anything to do with. Seems like a corporate bastage move to me; then again, I tend to think corporations are Machiavellian and they plan carefully.

But I have a mind that is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives- and this name change makes me think. I am probably 100% wrong, but it does make me think

if Ubi doesn't have some scheme, I think that they are blindly making things difficult for the community, because the casual player will think Il2 Cliffs of Dover is an add-on to 1946 or even the original Il2. I think Oleg is right all around by re-naming it entirely

Howdy Chris.

I guess I wasted a few sentences there huh?

hehe.

I understand your train of thought, but can't say I totally agree. I guess I'm not as suspicious as you. Every good businessman has an exit strategy so you can't blame Oleg for covering his bases, if indeed that is what he is doing.

I am fairly hopeful about the new sim, whatever it is called, but the debacle of the RoF release has forever changed my approach to new product.

What did Mr. Reagan say? Trust but verify?

ScarsdaleJack

...but the sim is not an installment of IL2. The IL2, and the theater it was used in is not even in the initial release. Having the name "IL2" in it is simply a weak attempt at brand recognition.

Its a little silly to call a new thing by an old name if the old name is dis-associated with the new product. Things like this don't help sales; confusing your target group doesn't really make sense. Like this for example:

This is what I was thinking, that it's the title that might be used when the game is released in Russia.

Oleg personally doesn't want the new name and he's arguing with the publishers. Let's hope it ends well for the game.

Personally I like the "Storm of War" title for the new series. ie...SOW Battle of Britain.
SOW Mediterranean
SOW Battle for Moscow etc

Using "IL-2" just confuses people with the "IL-2" series and much worse the "IL-2 WOP" and "IL-2 BOP" sims from another developer.

Salute

Wrong idea to use 'IL-2'.

Gives the impression the new game is just a retread of an old code and system.

And it is not related to the subject of the game.

Oleg's original idea is correct. Name should be an entirely new title, with the series name being identified along with the specific location of the modelled battle, ie. "Battle of Britain".

"Battle of Britain" will sell itself better than "IL-2" anyway.

Um...what did you even just say? that's a real car, with a silly name planted over it. It's a Ford GT, not a GT40

The picture shows an analogy, and the intent was to confuse you with the strange name

Ford didn't call the new Ford GT a "GT40", even though it plainly was an effort to recapture the stunning good looks of the GT40 MKIV, which was a street legal car but never a production car

Ford also didn't call the car a Mustang, a successful production car they still make, although it shares a common purpose with Ford GT: rear wheel drive performance car.

Ford instead chose to call the new car by a new name. Ford didn't try to confuse the holy bejabbers out of people by muddling the identity of the automobile. Ford used a new name for the new car: Ford GT

Do you get the analogy yet? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif In a similar way, while the new sim from Oleg Maddox may share history with an older product, it is not that older product, even though the subject matter is similar in many ways. The new sim does basically what the old one does, but it is demonstrably not the same in concept or execution of the original Il2, which is no longer made , nor does it share a common platform with Il2:1946, which is still being worked on as a product in development

The strange name on a familiar product that plainly was not what the caption described it as sure confused you, right?

Now imagine you want to buy a Ford GT, but it had the name I gave it in the brochure even though you knew it wasn't a Mustang at all http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Weird, right? Confusing. Names are powerful, and typically the human reaction is to expect the name to describe the thing it represents accurately

I'd like to say how really good it's been seeing a developer stick to a series and get back value for the development that went in. Few flight sim makers seemed to do that with Micro$oft and Dynamix being notable exceptions and for a while in 1999-2000 there were even articles published on return for investment in flight sims being bad at the same time as a number of software houses quit making flight sims.
A good flight sim engine is very expensive to produce. Publishers want immediate returns but they should wait before counting let alone closing down shop after one or two sims. European Air War could have gone another 2 or 3 with fairly short development time each if it wasn't for Microprose/HASBRO taking the short view, just for example. And what Sierrra did to the RB2 and RB3 development.. I'd rather not say.

New name for BoB SoW:

Well if recoil for gunners are still not modelled, i guess it could be named, "BOB, the return of the jedi".

No seriously, keep our beloved community spirit and you've got: "whiners rampage" in the place of the former Oleg Maddox room of the ******ed.

Model the bob map smaller to what it was ,so that the german fighter can keep fighting for a longer time above England, and you'll have:

"Wolfenstein's Luftwaffles strike back".
