View Full Version : Any older games that you still play?

Stalkervision's post on Panzer Elite got me thinking about games I've never played including many of the older titles. Do you have any older games that you still play or recommend playing? Feel free to post screenshots if you have them. I've passed over most of the FPS games including the Half Life series. This week I picked up Aliens vs. Predator 2 and I've been having an absolute blast with it. As a fan of the whole Aliens series I can't believe I missed this one. It plays very smoothly and is quite different from what I'm used to. It also supports multiplayer though I've not tried it yet. You can choose to be a Marine,Alien or Predator and each character has it's own mission. The graphics are very nice and the sounds are a taken directly from the movies. The Alien and Predator modes have been the most fun for me. As an Alien you can climb upside down on the ceilings and can see very good in the dark. As a Predator you have a variety of weapons including the ability to cloak. The Marine character is the most difficult and also the most nerve racking character. It seems like my flashlight always goes dead at the worst possible moment. Any way I'll share a few screen shots.

Alien mode:

I still like a blast of Ghost Recon (OGR). You can pick it up very cheap. I paid 8 for the Gold Pack, thats Ghost Recon + Island Thunder + Desert Siege, from Play.com. The disc also includes the two patches you need. Still the best infantry type shooter available.

Edit: that's DVD btw.

I run through the COD2 single player every six months or so, mostly for the Eighth Army/N. Africa missions.

Close Combat: A bridge Too far

I love the multilayer, you could play a game with someone for hours spanned over weeks, you'd just save the game on the host and resume whenever. Very chess like in this regard, also you could spend time thinking about your next move.

No rushing, no resource hogging like other RTS game, you had what you allocated at the start of combat. You could win a bridge battle by having a few machine gun crews, even if the enemy had scores of infantry. The enemies only option was smokescreens and mortars, and the occasional air/artillery strike.

Haven't found a newer RTS like it unfortunately http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

I've just played through I-War 2 - Edge of Chaos again, I'd play the original I-war but it's a pig to run on modern machines and needs much faffing with glide wrappers and such.

Every so often I reload up Mechwarrior 4 - Mercenaries, Vengeance and Black Knight. It's a crying shame there are no new official Mechwarrior games in development.

I still play MW4 Mercenaries on occasion as well. Until very recently, I had Mechwarrior 3 on the HD as well. Yeah, they need a new Mechwarrior game. Badly.

I also load up Tron 2.0 on occasion. I love the look of the game, fairly unique, and the light cycle are fun (and tough!!).

I'm thinking about playing Baldur's Gate II again. I finished the game as a Fighter, Ranger, and Thief, time to give it a try as a Mage or Cleric.

I highly recommend Mechwarrior 3 as well. While the graphics aren't as nice, the gameplay is more in line with the Battletech universe.

Yup, MW4 was sadly dummed down compared to 3, I tried mw3 last year for old times sake, but it crashed every 5 minutes and was so frustrating getting it to run properly I gave up. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Proper shame because it was the last of the true Mechwarrior games really.

I still play "Clod da'Poachers"......

Basically, while out walking our property you sneak up close (30 yards) to the guys poaching you find, and taking up a a number of large dirt clods do your best to knock them out of the tree or to the ground taking as many shots required.

Head Shot = 10 points
Torso = 5
Limbs = 3
Make them drop their weapon = +5 bonus
Get them cursing at you = +2 bonus
Make them lie (didn't know the land was private) = +1 bonus
Make them tell the truth = +100 bonus (never happens)

Roughly get 5 a year...

I've often though about breaking out the B-17 Flying Fortress disks out again and installing it on my Win98 machine. But I don't know how to get the latter updates/patches anymore. I did not like to actually fly the planes in that sim ( because that experience sucked ) but I'd man the gunner positions and also the navigator and bombadier. It was great fun in it's day. And the physics for the BMG defensive guns was fairly realistic. It was a fun game!!

Only thing that bothered me was that to get a badly damaged bomber back to England you'd have to take over the controls yourself and fly it in real time from Germany to England for the mission to be successful. The AI could not fly a badly crippled plane for some reason, similar to this game in that respect. And you had to get your plane to base to continue the campaign as there was no "instant mission success" option. I spent up to three hours flying a stupid B-17 back to merry old England!!

Yup, I'm in the UK, the police came out, but the culprits had done a runner by the time they arrived, and even though the local coppers had an idea who it was they didn't follow it up. Normally the cops won't do squat for poachers unless it's salmon/seatrout netting (and we were warned if we saw gangs netting we should just ring the EA and police and keep well away as they are often armed and not afraid of seriously hurting you), but if you are threatened with assault they will eventually get off their backsides. I stopped Bailiffing because it was ruining my fishing, and having no proper response from the police or environment agency just made it feel like a waste of effort, moving the same folk on time and time again, we'd take photos of them and note times and such but to no avail...

I still fly B-17 II occasionally. Despite the outdated graphics and sounds it's still a fun game. I always liked giving my crews a few milk runs bombing the sub pens in western France before sending them off to hit the oil refineries and aircraft factories in Germany.

The time compression in that game could get frustrating too. Not as bad as in the original but still missions could take a ridiculously long time if you couldn't time skip. The crew management would get a little frustrating because they'd do dumb things.

And getting to fly the German planes that were intercepting the bombers was fun, but a little counterproductive to go shooting down your own bomber formation.

I have Close Combat II through V with a lot of the accompanying user made maps and mods, such as the France 1940 mod. I love how a command to advance through an open field with a hedgerow at the opposite end will result in a morale drop because you can be fairly certain that there is an AI squad in the hedge covering that approach. Also, you only see what your soldiers see according to their LOS. You will see an enemy squad busting their @ss to get between buildings, only to appear momentarily, and then disappear into the opposite building. In several scenarios, I have seen the sole remaining Tiger tank AI unit move into the middle of the town square and simply wait for me with a non-negotiating attitude. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Battlezone I. What I like about this game is that with the exception of the outside perimeter of the map, a player could traverse an otherwise impassable area if they found the correct path and approach. I took many players by surprise that way, with them saying, "How the he11 did you get up on that plateau behind my defenses?!" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

MechCommander I. The atmosphere of the game has a sense of urgency about the need for victory because what is salvaged suppy-wise will definitely and directly affect future missions.

Mechwarrior 4 and the accompanying expansion packs. Like others here, I don't care for the game as much as MechWarrior 3. I used to play MechWarrior I, but the 16 color graphics would be too cheesy for me now.

"Martian Dreams", which is a RPG DOS game. I play this with a DOS emulator. I have always liked the stories about a Victorian era Space 1889 journey to Mars, and this fills the bill perfectly.

Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds". This is a strategy game based on the H.G. Wells story that uses the soundtrack from the musical. What I like especially about the game is that it is is completely non linear in whatever strategy you decide to use. The game follows the book by using details such as the "Red Weed" that the martians spread. The longer a county stays under Martian control, the more difficult it is for the Humans to traverse the terrain that is covered to whatever degree by the weed.

Wing Commander:Prophesy. The cut scenes use well known professional actors like Mark Hamill as a high ranking commander, and Ginger Lynn as the chief mechanic. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The game video is definitely a lot better than the movie of the same name and has a great story line.

One of my favorite board games since I was a kid is "Clue". I still have the computer version installed, and will play it on occasion.

My wife's favorite movie is "Aliens", and she plays AVP2 all of the time on her computer. I'll hear her cursing like a sailor in a mix of Italian and English above the sound of Xenomorphs' screeches, pulse rifles, smart guns, and exploding grenades. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I remember that game. The RTS elements were a lot of fun, and I liked the story line. Activision came out with a lot of great games in the mid to late 90's. Mechwarrior 2 being the best of them.

One of these days I need to pick this one up again. I have the second one still, but it's no where near as good as the first, except in the graphics department.

When my wife and I first moved in together, I had just picked up Icewind Dale II. She was all over that. She would stay up really late (or early!) and pick over every detail. We had the computer in the bedroom, so occasionally I'd wake up to her swearing at the Trolls that just jumped her party. She loves mass carnage games as well, like Mercenaries for the Xbox. She's laughs like crazy while she's sniping everyone.

I still have the CD-Roms, I keep forgetting to put them on my new mp3 player. I realized the other day that I still have the MW2 soundtrack loaded onto my Xbox, I would have it going when I play racing games. Unfortunately, you can't have a custom soundtrack with Mechassault, or I would have done that in a heartbeat.

I've just got the Mekpak and the High Definition Pack (HDP) HDP does up the textures and is compatible wit the Mektek packs.

The downloads for the MekTek packs can be confusing, so to save people the hassle that I had searching out which ones to get, I'll try linking them to here with instructions, 1st u need MW4 Mercs :

Get the Microsoft pr1 Mercs patch MS Patch (http://download.microsoft.com/download/d/f/3/df312acc-d23b-4912-96fb-3073f7f2d11d/mercpr1.exe) and install

Then the Mektek pr1- 3.02a patch from here (http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?automodule=downloads&req=idx&cmd=viewdetail&f_id=298) and install

The Mektek 3.02b update here (http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?automodule=downloads&req=idx&cmd=viewdetail&f_id=304) and install

Then go to you Mercs game installation folder and look for a mekmatch.reg file. Double click it and let it install. (It lets you play online with the Mekpak)

Finally, get the HDP for Mekpak 3.02b pack from here (http://www.mechstorm.com/dsplus/mplus.php) (It's in the MW4 Mercenaries/High definition patch section) Install that and you should be good to go.

The Mekpaks have loads of new mechs you can normally only use online or in instant action, but by following the instructions from here (http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=74699) you can get a few of them in the single player campaign, it works, I tested it and swapped my Fleas for the Wasp chasis, it looks like it could give the old campaign a bit of variety http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

You guys know that Mech Commander 2 is a free download, now, right? So is the original Command and Conquer. (I have had problems with C&C crashing when units hit the edges of some maps, though...)

Mech Commander 2 Source Code (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6D790CDE-C3E5-46BE-B3A5-729581269A9C&displaylang=en) (From Microsoft, no less!)

Gamespot Announcement of C&C download (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6178034.html) It's available at most game sites that also host demos and patches like Gamershell, Filepanet, etc.

As for me, I still play a game or two of the V for Victory series by 360 Pacific.

P.s Good Luck with the Mech Mashing Jagdgeschwader2....and remember...

A speck of dirt on your mechs windscreen Probably means the grunts in the mfb have been slacking off again. And the little smear on your goggles is probably the left over goo of that bloody strider c1 laser boat you trod on last sortie http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

I got Mechwarrior 4 Mercs up and running last night with all the add ons. It's a whole new game. After I get acclimated again with piloting a Mech, I'll be sure to seek out some fellow mechwarriors for some online action. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Glad to hear it. Good luck finding an online game not populated only with Bots.

The MekPak 4 is being kept under tight wraps as to what is in it, but there have been hints that there are some radical game play changes, and graphic upgrades.

No one can say when it will be out. Any question on it at MekTek gets answered with a "S00N, n00b"

That's a bummer. Well, I guess I'll have some searching to do.

Awesome! Sounds like there won't be much left of the original game after that.

If Microsoft would just pass on the license to a company that cares (like MekTek?) we might have a kick *** Mechwarrior 5 game.

I found my original copies of Mechwarrior 2 and Ghost Bears Legacy in the attic at my parents house a few days ago.. Didn't bring 'em home because of XP's problem with running older games. <sigh>

Though I do have an outlet for my vintage gaming pleasure..

Abandonia (http://www.abandonia.com/)

Started playing Ultima 7 again (never finished it as I did the ones before it) thanks to that site and DosBox.

Also wish I could get Panzer Commander to run on XP, though I may try it through the DosBox program to see if maybe it'll not lock up the second I enter a mission... <sigh>

ahhh a Mechwarrior 5 now that I would buy but I think Microsoft is clinging to the license to pump out console versions.

Any one ever play Heavy Gear ?

Always wanted to give that a try but it appears to be as rare as rocking horse doodoo these days ?

I had the first one, but not the sequel. I don't think the first one would work with XP, since it uses the same engine as MW2 Mercenaries, but maybe the second?

Yeah I came into the whole mech thing during MW3 so I didn't see much of MW2 and Heavy gear though most of my squad mates had come from that era though. Still I will trawl around and see what I can find on ebay.

Oh if your doing the MW4 thang you may wanna pick up the clan and inner sphere packs as well as I belive this gives you some more mechs to play with.

I just loaded up MW4 Mercs on my humble laptop and the bloody thing worked ?!?

It seems like only yesterday that I had a machine that could only just barely handle it.

I am gona have to do some trawling around on Mek tek as that Assualt tech has come on a bit since the last time I checked it out.

Oh on the topic of other Games I play

Hind85 is another one that I occasionaly fire up

Any one else miss vector graphics lol

www.the-underdogs.info (http://www.the-underdogs.info) has tons of old games to download for free, used to DL a few a while ago, havent in a while. Hasn't updated since 2006 but still has tons of old gems on there. like the Close Combat series.

I used to play War in Russia from Matrix games, now that's oldschool, almost the 80s. addicting game with none of that extra drivel.
