The crew and I are gonna hang out near the docks at Brest on the 4th. You know... shoot off a few starfire shells, hang out on deck... maybe cook up that slab of ribs we've been savin. We've even got a band lined up if anyone cares to join us.

Aside from this coming holiday, is there any practical use in the game for a sub to shoot off a starfire shell?

Is there a mission or something that we have to try to locate someone, or if we get damaged do you ever fire one of these things in distress?

When
engaging with the deck gun at night I shoot one in the air now and then to help the gun crew. I've also used them to attack at short range when out of other ammo. They also seem to lay down a blanket of brightness when I'm trying to outrun somebody at night.

Now that they've been fixed/changed so they ignite around 1800m away instead of right next to your boat, they can be useful early in the war to help identify lone merchants (lets you read the flag at night) - it's already May 1941 for me now though and most of the merchants I meet these days are either armed or escorted or both, so they don't do me much good now http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

At least I'll get some use out of them when/if I have to start a new career - it's too bad they couldn't just make them ignite at whatever range you fire them, but at least they fixed the worst part about them so they can at least be a little useful now

I lobbed one on a merchant ship to see what it would do and it sat there for a while then rolled off into the water, nothing was set on fire. I assume trade off all but maybe 10 and have them replaced with more HE or AP ammo. I dont need so many of those things.

Star shells are great. I use them at night. What I do is fire about four off in five second increments. Each is fired about five degrees to the right or left each depending on the heading of my target. My target will always be illuminated as if moves on its heading. This helps the deck gun boys do the job. Once I ran out of all my shells and had a ship on its knees. I used the star shells in attempt to sink the ship. It worked, I aimed for the water line. The only thing about star shells...it is great advertisment that I'm here! DOH!

Should be able to shoot them right next to a plane, blinding the pilot, and causing him to crash... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Sorry to break it to you stink but starshells do damage ships, just not very much. The same power as the 37mm, maybe alittle more. I've sank a C3 with them after I ran out of HE and AP.

And Starshells alone finish off coastal vessels quickly.

Yep, its true. I had a small merchant limping away, five star shells took it down.

I dunno, I sent a few into a coastal merchant after I ran out of regular shells and nothing, it just sailed away burning and never sunk. Ill give it another try though, maybe just get really close to it and start off with the star shells and count how many it takes. Did your ships catch fire from using them or were they already burning? Also could they have succumbed to their original wounds before the star shells and it be merely a coincidence? You guys got me curious now.

Wow never knew you could swap ammo, makes sense though cause you can swap torps. Duh! I guess I'll dump some starshells for more HE or AP next patrol. But yea I use them for nighttime deckgun firing when its too dark on lone merchant ships gun or no gun or lob them onto ships when I'm out of eveything else. They do come in handy in a pinch; I've even made my own constellations with them http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The merchant was darn beat up by the time I used the star shells. Again, I aimed for the waterline. Perhaps it was on the way down and just looked like star shells did the job. I don't think so because it expoded when I hit the waterline. And after the 5th shot it said unit destroyed. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't believe there is a menu in the in port screen to do this but if you are maning the cannon, you can select what is loaded.

no you cant swap shells, I just stated that I wish I could, sorry for the confusion. Ill look more into this star shell thing, next coastal merchant I run into, Im going to get all deck gun on it and show it my star shells, Ill count how many it takes to set it on fire and or destroy it, just in case it really works, if so then Ill post that info here.

I believe if you so wish it you can change the deck gun loadout in the config files for each sub type. Even give yourself ridiculous amounts of ammo.

I dont tweak files, my game is original out of the box with the 1.3 patch only. There is no honor in fixing things so the tables are in your favor, but if its your thing, by all means enjoy!

As long as you don't go above the total number of shells stock I just see it as enhancing the game for something that was missing.

Of course in reality U-boat commanders didn't get to pick their torpedo loadouts either. Anyway when the game was released someone did a mod a short time after that traded some starshells for more HE shells. I believe it was an editied config for the subs but I'm not sure.

I just assume play it how UBI meant it to be, granted it has some bugs but all games do, I have read alot of complaints about the latest patch and decided I didnt want to be a statistic along with everyone else who DL the newest one. Ill wait for the next one so Im positive everything has been smoothed out, why jump from one set of bugs to another? I dont use one single mod on my game, I play on fairly high realism of 77% and I take the hunting very seriously. The bugs in 1.3 dont really bother me, it actually makes my realism settings more along the lines of 85% or higher and I have grown to work around them. Its easy enough to sink some of the ships, but getting in and out of convoys and certain ports is a tad bit more difficult, and Ive always been into the commando tactics. My days of scoring mass tonnage are over, now Im all about improving my tactics for when I get the XXI, Ill need it by then in 44'. When I do get that shiney new tub, then Ill go for max tonnage in that beast, but until that year arrives for me, its all about stealth and death from afar, no mods no tweaks added.
