Go find "Aircraft Power Pack" by Shockwave; it should be at most software stores like Best Buy, EB Games and Gamestop.

It is an expansion for three Microsoft simulations:

- Combat Flight Simulator 3: if you want to shoot guns and drop bombs; some piloting skill is required.

- Flight Simulator 2004 (aka FS9) and/or FSX: If you want to move the levers and switches in the cockpit, talk to air traffic control, use real life procedures, fly anywhere in the world, etc.

Aircraft Power Pack has two Shockwave expansions on one DVD-ROM: "FirePower" for CFS-3 and "Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets" for FS9/FSX.

FirePower came out not long after CFS-3 and sort of 'saved' CFS-3 in many peoples' eyes. It has a large (if somewhat unfocused) collection of flyables for CFS-3, and most of them far exceed the stock Microsoft planes in quality. Offhand, I recall these planes being in FirePower: B-17F, B-17G, B-24, B-29, Lancaster, Arado 234, Me410, Ta-183, He162 ... There were more but the heavy bombers really were the main draw. You can see sample videos at Shockwave's homesite that feature the 'enhanced battlefield environment' -- in other words, bigger explosions, more smoke, longer lasting fires, realistic damage models for vehicles.

Shockwave then recycled some of the best models and repackaged them for FS9 to launch their Wings of Power line. The debut product "Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets" featured the B-17F, B-17G, B-24J, B-29, Lancaster, Arado, He162, Ta183, and Ta152, and maybe one or two others I've forgotten. The main difference between the FS and CFS-3 versions were that in FS you couldn't go to other stations except the pilot/copilot seats (so no gun views) in the bombers, and you couldn't drop bombs. On the other hand, you can move levers and push buttons in the virtual cockpits, which you can't do in CFS-3 planes.

"Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets" became an instant classic, and I think that Shockwave discovered that the FS market is where the real money is. The original "Heavy Bombers and Jets" became a rarity for a while and was fetching $70 or more on amazon.com. Meanwhile, Shockwave produced several more planes that could only be purchased through their online downloads store.

Shockwave released another CD-ROM last summer for FS9/FSX titled "Wings of Power II: World War II Fighters Special Edition." It featured the Spitfire I and Me109E (from their Battle of Britain sim), the P-51D and P-47D (updated from the online store), and a Japanese A6M, presumably a model completed for the Flying Tigers game they're developing.

More recently, the Aircraft Power Pack was released to include "FirePower" and "Wings of Power: Heavy Bombers and Jets" in one box. As a bonus, Shockwave reworked their original P-51D model for FS9 to make it flyable in CFS-3. They also included the reworked Mustang model from the "WWII Fighters Special Edition" CD-ROM as an unadvertised bonus.

The bonus P-51D for CFS-3 has some bugs, like no landing brakes for example, but it is fun to fly and fight in. Get APP and you'll not only get more enjoyment out of CFS-3, but you can always pick up FS9 or FSX later and try flying the 'heavies' around the globe.

I think most people here mainly fly Il-2. From what I know, CFS3 is quite time-consuming to 'make good', while Il-2 works great straight from the box. I don't know how good CFS3 is when it's at it's best, because I (and probably most of the people here) don't have the time to get CFS3 to anywhere close to its full potential, and we think Il-2 is so good that it's not worth the countless hours to make CFS3 match up to it.

We have the B-25J flyable (and the -C, -G and -H as AI-only). It's got a lot of similarity to the B-24, in that it's a multi-engined level bomber with many .50" gun turrets and positions, and a Norden bombsight (or some approximation of one), and it's characteristically an American aircraft of the same era as the B-24. And it tends to kill various crewmembers if you're not careful while landing wheels-up. On the other hand it's not all-electric, and it has a gunsight and 4 fixed forward-firing .50s.

There is an AI B-24 by the way. It can be flown from the external view with a certain amount of jiggery-pokery but only on dogfight maps, and the flight model isn't as detailed as the flyable aircraft.

FYI. for those that didn't know. IRL the bomb bay doors on a B-24C-109 Open @ 97 pounds pressure. Anyone know why?

1st one to guess wins .....Nothing!

A wild guess... In case you drop the bombs without opening the bay first considering the smallest general purpose bomb used was 100 lbs...

No really big heavies... But we have the Betty, Heinkel, Junkers 88, TB-3, and B-25. There's a Wellington hack for the Betty too. (Comes stock, maybe only for 1946 though, can't remember)

IL-2 is more of a tactical fighter simulation, and a darn good one at that. But sometimes I get a hankering to fly a Flying Fortress or Liberator, or a Lancaster...
