I have been trying to see how high I can get in certain aircraft. Usually, the test subjects included the obvious choices: Ta152, Fw190D, P51, P47, etc. This time, however, I thought I'd try something different. the MiG-3U. I knew that the MiG-3 was designed for high altitude, but I would've never guessed that it would go THIS HIGH. At this altitude, without any boost, if I may add, it cleanly outperforms any other aircraft I have tried. The Ta152 is a slug at 12-13k compared to the MiG-3U.

What other planes have you all dragged up to Nosebleed City? Any unusual aircraft? Please share any and all stories!

The atmospheric modeling is all the same above 10,000 meters if you weren't aware of it. Some aircraft have their altimeters stop when reaching 10,000 meters or 30,000 feet. No point in even programming them beyond that.

Could've fooled me. The Mustang can get to 11k, but it won't get to 12k so easily. There is a BIG difference between 10,000m and 13,000m to me.

If you want stories:
In a DF online, I became sick of the fighting, so I simply decided to climb as high as possible before the scenario ended in my I-153P. I belive that I made it up to about 9000 metres, but at that point, it was nearly impossible to retain altitute, much less climb, but I was able to get the biplane up that high...

LOL nice! Wonder if the I-153 had oxygen installed...

its nice to see some planes can get that high. The P47 is supposed to get 42,000 ft and hit 420 mph. (in the Game)I got it (P47D10)up to 44,000ft, before it started sucking air. I dropped it to 42,000ft. and was able to maintain a 600kmph speed. Pretty good, really. I read accounts from pilots that the usually the P47 would cruise around 27,000 to 32,000 ft. and the highest DF would be around 34,000 and at that altitude the 109s would be falling for thicker air (split S down and the P47 would chase them....very rare to fight that high though. (from what ive read) thats in RL.

Me-262 service ceiling is supposed to be 11 K

good luck getting it there . . . .

altimeter works fine it seems at 44,000ft. really couldnt climb past 44,000 ft.. this was in the Crimea map. But I wonder.. i would be a shame it atmospheric modeling stopped at 30,000 ft (which I doubt with the 3.04 patch) because a lot of flying tactics occured above 30,000ft. really....not in DF servers but in RL.

The modeling dosen't stop, per se, but it stops getting calculated in the same way as 10,000m and below and gets some sort of linear, generic treatment. That's why you can climb above 11k, but maybe not 12k.

it only takes me about 8 minutes to get to 10 k in a late war fighter

depending on the map set-up , i constantly have fights at 8K & higher

its a total different style & i lub it

Where's robban, our resident test guru?
I demand he run altitude tests on all flyable a/c on IL2 immediately! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

btw, robban, thanks for the topspeed SL info - where did that thread get too as I wanted to consult it again?
