I have found I do the best with the incremental panning from the cockpit view. This allows me to track enemy aircraft easily. However, sometimes the view flips to an angle i don't want and I lose sight.

If the panning were smooth like in CFS games I think would be better. Is this possible to change or make optional?

Use the mouse, that's pretty smooth.

I discovered a toggle switch in the controls recently myself (obviously everyone else knew and forgot to tell me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif). I think its F9 or something, anyways, it makes the hat on your joystick pan and lock rather than snap from view to view (which was very annoying).

And there is the mouse which is as smooth as you get.

You can use the mouse, or

FB View Plus
NewView
or
Joy2Key

to get smooth view panning happening.

i use the mouse and its great but i wonder if it would be hard to implement mouse smoothing in the game.

I use the mouse and newview in the POV hat. SOmetimes I need to take my hand of the mouse but this way I can still track the bad guy. Mouse is preferred unless I need a lot of throttle work. This setup (Mouse and hat) gives most flexibility IMO.

I tried the mouse and I currently use F9 for incremental views...but what I'm getting at is to have smooth panning like the mouse view but via the hat switch.

I have tried the free newview software mentioned above to get a smooth pov hat pan and it works reasonably well although at times it disconnects and I have to switch from external back to cockpit view to recover.
