View Full Version : Funniest thing you've seen or done in IL-2...

Hi folks. "Nugget" of sorts here. Had IL-2 FB many years ago but my computer at the time couldn't keep up. Bought a new machine recently and decided to dust off the old disk and Logitech Wingman joystick. Went online to look for a patch and saw a MAJOR patch, aka: 1946. Bought it and I'm back in the skies. Well, part of the time. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So, just to make this post more meaningful than your run-of-the-mill "Heeeyyyy, good to be here again, can I be your friend?" introduction, let's share some of the funnier things you've seen or done in IL-2.

I'll start...

Going from IL2 FB to 1946, one of the first things I wanted to try was carrier takeoff and landings. Learning to do so with the Corsair was, well, "challenging." I finally have it mastered most of the time, but the training had its share of comedy.

1. Time and time again, I can't land on the carrier without rolling into the ocean during slow-flight or exploding when I hit the deck. After 40 failed attempts, I go online and find some good guides for carrier landing. Still, I can't get the bird down and the stall speed is much higher than it should be. When the torque isn't rolling into the drink, I'm still a fireball on the deck. After a lot of cussing and frustration it hits me... the mission was starting me with a couple of sizable bombs instead of the default. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif That'll do it.

2. Now that I'm bomb-free, I come in for what is sure to be a great carrier landing. Come in JUST a bit too low and clip the gear off the plane, slide down the runway on the Corsair's belly and bent wings, clip the right wing on the tower... and finally come to a stop. But, for once, I am STILL ALIVE and UNINJURED with the plane balanced on the right edge of the deck. Hit the bail out command because the plane is on fire.

Dude opens the canopy, and ... the pilot immediately jumps off the wrong side of the plane and falls from the carrier deck to his death in Davey Jones locker. LMAO.

That's enough from me. I'd love to hear yours.

Again, very helpful forum. The only problem is, this forum has me completely convinced I need an upgrade in controls. Well, the real problem is, how in the heck can I convince my wife the cash for a new joystick and pedals is money well spent? Or how in the world can I hide such conspicuous hardware from my wife. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Any chance I can convince her the pedals are a new foot rest? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Speaking of which, for a guy on "a budget," here's your other basic nugget solicitation:

I welcome recommendations of what hardware to buy and in what order of importance. I'm not going to be able to do it all at once. Might have to go the refurbished route.

This was my first ever attempt at a carrier trap, stationary carrier no less. I have to confess thou' it was the day after PF hit the shops and T.O. and landing were much easier in the unpatched v3.0

I've not really got much better, not enough practise.

Welcome back, btw. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

shortly after I got my hands on the Pe-2 addon, me and a couple of buddies of mine decide to join up and play one of the co-op missions that came with Pe-2. I hopped into a Pe-2 and one of my buds decided to be the gunner. well, we take off, join up with our escorts, and not long after get attacked by a group of BF-109's being led by a human player, who decides that my plane looks like the best target. I dive down while my rear gunner tries to hit him, and as I'm flying just above treetop level I keep my eyes peeled behind me and each time the 109 fires a burst I either push or pull on the stick to dodge the fire. well, eventually he gets an engine burning, and in my panic I decide that now would be a good time to make a belly landing (at 360 Km/h no less). in my attempt I break one wing, which sends the plane into a cartwheel, breaking off the other wing and rear fuselage while spinning for about five seconds straight before turning into a huge pile of flaming reckage on the ground. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Had a similar crash-landing-on-deck-bail-out experience, but my wrecked Seafire ended up in the middle of the deck. So my pilot bailed out, ran and ran away... then took that dive... over the side! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

In an online fight it took me ages to get my SBD (loaded with 3 bombs) up to 3km, and steer it towards the enemy flagship.

I start a perfect dive, target in sight... getting bigger and bigger... press the button twice, bring her out of the dive at sealevel... beautifull, not one hit by AAA... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Waiting for the 'Enemy Ship destroyed' message... but it doesn't come...

Then it daunted on me... I had pressed the 'rockets' button... twice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif there I was at sealevel again... still loaded with 3 bombs http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

MSalama, I wonder if the pic I use in my Sig is better or worse than yours http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I think you have more holes but I have lost both ailerons

Haha! I see I am not the only one who loves playing with 'how many holes can this Il-2 take?'.

One of my most often played QMBs is having a flight of IL2s attack a German airbase with AAA set to 'on'.

I will keep flying the aircraft round and round, deliberately trying to collect holes. Virtually all the time, I have holes all over the place (I love those see thru gaps in the wings) except for 1 single unblemished area (e.g. rudder) and I would want to get that part holed as well, but the attempt always ends up with the elevator lines getting cut or some other damage that stops me flying home.

The only time I got one sufficiently damaged to satisfy me (MASSIVE holes all round, one aileron missing, rudder shot off, elevator fabric burnt off, engine smoking, wingtip missing/burnt), I nursed the crate back to home base BUT the damn landing gear couldn't deploy and I had to crash it, spoiling the fun. I so wanted to land it and try taking off again.

Making a rare visit to UK-DED3 the other day, I took an IL for the first time in ages - and the first time I had my hydralics shot away, so the gear wouldn't deploy, as you said.

I then found out, after however many years with this game series, (and I used to fly the Il2 a lot) that you can lower the gear manually - which was nice. Considering I'd bagged 2 110's on that run.

I only found that out when I bought 1946. Back in the FB days, I never noticed that part. Even now, what key it is eludes me. Its one of those rarely used commands which I have to hit 'ESC' to check.

Is it just me or is the Il2 very prone to having the rudder and elevator controls cut by rear hits? I always get a nice collection of burns and holes on the plane but can't get it back to base due to cut elevators.

Aye, luckily, I had it mapped to the arrow keys from flying Ratas and Wildcats, just thought I'd try it on the off-chance.

IMO, yes. It seemed to go that way about the time of 3.0 or 4.01, can't remenber which. That was when I more or less stopped flying it so much online, it ceased to be fun, losing your elevators so easily.

I copied this from an old thread. It was probably my finest moment ever in this game:

I used to have a track of this, but I lost it in a reinstallation. You guys would have loved to have seen it.

Anyway, I was in a Corsair, trying to landing on a carrier. I made my typical poor approach, and as I crossed over the stern stalling my port wing was dropping dangerously low. The wing hit the deck and broke off right where it joins to the fuselage; the resultant reaction caused me to roll to starboard, where the starboard wing hit the deck and broke off the same way. At almost exactly the same time, the tailhook by some fluke had managed to catch the wire; after the port-starboard impact what was left of my poor bird bounced up off the deck, still tethered by the tailhook to the wire. The wire stretched taut; my wingless Corsair hung a good 10'-12' feet off the deck in midair for what seemed like an eternity... but was probably only a second and a half. Then, shockingly, the fuselage--stressed to a degree never envisioned by the designers-- snapped in two right behind the cockpit, the rear half catapulted backwards by the tension on the wire; the front half dropping like a stone and skidding to a halt right in front of the conning tower, where it then exploded in a huge fireball.

Good times.

The image of my flat-packed I-153 raised a few laughs among my team-mates
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v458/brando6BL/ouch.jpg

The funniest thing I have ever seen though, happened in a cross-country race that I flew in years ago. On one leg we were assigned to land on a road in a Japanese town and one of the team had to taxi into a temple, requiring a wing-fold, and read the coordinates of the next waypoint in the race, which were written in lights on the wall.

We all did our task. Perfect landings, and Pedro & I taxied into side roads and turned so that we were ready to roll back. Our companion (who shall remain nameless) did his part to perfection as well and gained the clue before rolling back onto the makeshift runway.

"Cool" we cried and sat waiting to see him take off so that we could roll back onto the road and fly off. There were no external views, and our view was obscured by buildings, so we sat watching the gap ahead of us as he locked his tail-wheel and wound up his engine.
Shortly afterwards we heard him say that he couldn't get any lift, even at 140 kts, and then we saw his F4U flash by - wings neatly folded!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif We were all laughing helplessly as he crashed & burned and even the prospect of re-flying the leg (as per the match rules) didn't dent our happiness.

I had a WTF?!? one:

Stalingrad campaign, in a Bf-109 attacking a bunch of IL-2's. I go into one, dewinging it, fly straight towards the next, smoking he's engine, ran through third one, and rammed the last one (the leader of the lead flight) while shooting at it...now, everybody would think that he lost a wing, but noooo...I was still there, UNHARMED http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif after dewinging that IL-2. After reviewing the track, the thing which made the issue even more interesting is that I hit it wing-to-wing...

Funniest thing I've seen or done?

Probably one of my early online kills. I was chugging along in my Warhawk, just waiting for some Spitnoob to jump down on me. Lo and behold, a speck comes zipping down, and the poor Spitfire pilot knocks a bunch of important equipment off my plane. However, as he pulls up, I jerk back on the stick and start firing at his plane. Right as I crash into the ground, his plane goes spiraling downwards and impacts. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Nothing more embarassing than getting shot down by a dying P-40.

One of the funniest things that I've ever witnessed in this sim was when I was flying online once in Hyperlobby. My brother and I had been in the same dogfight room for about an hour.He was flying his bomber and I was flying my usual mount at the time,a Bf-109G6AS.
There was a HUGE furball raging right over our airfield, planes being shot down left and right, flak going off, just intense.Right as I start my engine to taxi out and get the heck off of the ground(sitting duck),I see one of my team mates get strafed or bombed. His aircraft is obviously damaged and he decides to bail out while on the ground.I'm rolling down the runway, speed increasing, and then you know what happens? The pilot who bailed out on the ground runs toward the runway that I'm on and dives right in front of my approaching plane. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif At this point I could do nothing but watch in horror(then LMAO)as my 109 rolls right over the pilot, killing him.I lost points for killing a team mate, but I laughed so hard I just about wet myself. My brother saw it happen too and we still talk about it occasionally(it happened 2 years ago).BTW,my plane was undamaged.
I wish so bad that I would have recorded that.

TB-3 wars in the early days would have about 15 of us laughing so hard we couldn't stop. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

We would actually try NOT to shoot the other aircraft's crew, but would see how much damage we could inflict on each other's aircraft. Many was the time we would all run out of ammo and take our flaming, smoking wrecks home. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Those TB-3's can flatout absorb MG fire.

The funniest thing I recall happened a long while ago. I was flying a TB-3, and was rammed by a Bf-109 tearing half of my right wing off. The plane went into a terrible spin, but my plane was falling so slowly it touched down safely on the ground without breaking the gear!

I got hit once with a 5000 pounder. I had set up a QMB with me in a ME-109E and I was attacking 4 Pe-8s armed with 5000 pounders. I gave the lead bomber a quick squirt or my cannons and guns from head on and slightly above. I decided to try and dive below the Pe-8 but he dropped his load just as I was passing, I didn't even have time to react.
On the plus side, the blast brought down the rest of the bombers.
Another jape once again involved bombers and bombs, but this time it was me doing the bombing.
I had read about how late was German pilots had tried to bring down bombers by dropping bombs onto them. I thought I would give it a go but I knew that it would be a kamikaze mission because the bomb would go off as soon as it hit the B-17.
I tried several times to hit the B-17 (I made sure that it was empty and couldn't fire on me) but I wasn't having much luck. The last attempt I made looked like a miss again so I turned and ws about to RTB, about 10 seconds later I got 2 kills. It turned out that my bomb timer was set to 10 seconds, and that the bombs landed IN the B-17. The bomb landed just aft of the top turret but didn't fall through, it just sat there for 10 seconds before exploding.

I too have played "how many holes" but with a B-25, it is always fun to try and make it back to base on one engine, one missing vertical stab and more holes than I could be arsed counting.

Recently I got the best kill I have ever made while "flying" a Bf-110G-2 with 2 Mk-108's and 2 MG-151/20's.
During taxi and take-off and while landing I always fly full-pit (On-line, off-line I always fly full-pit). I had decided to do a strafing run, so I spawn in my 110 and power-up both engines and set my flaps to take-off. I have spawned on the far pad from the runway, so begin my taxi and turn onto that long taxiway that leads down to the runway. I am trundling along and beginning to slow as I close on the parallel taxiway before the runway.

Suddenly a P-47D comes screaming at me from ahead!
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
OMG! Oh, Poo! Oh excrement! I just knew I was about to catch a 500 lbs bomb right between my eyes!
He dips below my nose as I squib first right, then left in a probably futile attempt to avoid the bomb I just knew was whistling right at my hapless 110.
Then I squib back onto the taxiway just as he pops-up again right in-front of me.
Of course, I pulled the trigger immediately. The first thing I see is muzzle blast from my kannonen that completely obscures the P-47.
Then I see a massive explosion and my view follows a flaming mass of P-47 parts spinning past over my Bf-110!
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif
He never saw that coming http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif!
Neither did the very disappointed FW-190 that was chasing him that I had not seen.

The P-47 had no bombs, it turns out, he was trying to escape that FW.

And, the worst thing is:
I was not recording! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif Very good and intereting reads in here. Seemed like some really excellent adventures everyone has been flying ...and crashing.
I am very new to this game and I´m still quite green at flying all sorts of planes, but I am having LOADS of fun and great times.

One interesting flight I made a while back was on a Me-262 on a mission to stop some B-17´s. After shooting down a good number of them (7 to be exact - guess I got lucky) I noticed that my left jet-engine was on-fire and had numerous large holes in my wings and fuselage.
The first thing that came to my mind was to shut down all engines before I caught fire and blew up. So I did, at about 3000+ height above the clouds.
It all went very well, and I managed to glide the plane down for a good solid 5 to 7 minutes.
It was raining below the clouds so I guess the "water/rain" cooled off my engine fire.
On the glide down I passed some of my earlier victims also coming down in front of me riding down on their parachutes. They didn´t seem to happy either.
It seemed like an eternaty gliding down and I slowly lowered my flaps for a smooth landing out on some grassy field... then lowered my wheels for a good landing... suddenly all tires were quickly ripped right off the fuselage because I was coming in too fast and too high. I managed to level the plane good and made a GREAT landing without blowing up. I Quickly popped oof the hood-canopy and made a safe getaway from the plane. Seconds later the ac just blew up with me hugging the ground and very safe.
That was a pretty amazing landing. I have tried the same landing circumstances about 4 other times after my engines got shot-up and I have never survived the belly-landings. Never again, Only that one first time I did it.I also have it recorded on film from the game. It makes a cool movie to see sometimes.

I was dogfighting with a fellow squaddie when he decided to go into a high speed run on the deck. I was following close, he was in a MiG-9, I was in a He-162D. well. i remember one of my first carrier landings.

a typical thing but it just had me laughing out loud.

i was comming in on Illustrius in my Seafire.
i put down hook and gear. i was well high. i know that now but i didnt know by then.
i touch down right where my hook catches a wire but was i was coming down maybe 40 decrees or so my plane Bounced up high again with the wire still hanging on.
then i was still in the air for a short while..
and BAM i Smashed into the deck in a big fireball.

that was funny.

One time on a fairly quiet HL server, myself and another flyer had loaded up in A-20Gs and set off in formation to go bomb an ammo factory. The only other player had (wisely) loaded Blue and came hunting us in a FW-190.

As we approached the target - still a couple of miles out, the FW bounced us. My wingman was very quickly reduced to flaming wreckage by the 190's firepower. I decided I would press on to the nearing target, and desperately threw my plane into a shallow dive to get maximum speed.
The dive was such that I passed over my target at about 200m altitude, and dropped bombs.

Then the world blew up. The factory (being an ordnance factory) went up in a glorious muchroom cloud explosion. My plane was smashed to pieces. The FW flew through the towering black cloud of smoke & debris, and LOL'd at me in chat.

That was the mission that taught me to use Bomb Delay. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

My wingman emerges victorious.

And celebrates by bailing out and running himself over with his tail wheel.

But wait, theres more! In his celebration of victory he forgets to turn off the engine or set the parking brake.

Not the funniest, but typical. I was evading a Claude trying to draw a bead on my tail by swinging left to right in my I-16 down in the daisies. I swung right and swung left with flaps and tightened it up. KERBLAM. The Claude chose that moment to overshoot me to the left and we intersected perfectly. Well, he said ruefully, if I'd had 6 DOF, I could have checked my six properly!

One of the first online war missions I'd played and I was quite proud of myself for having shot down 2 190 Antons in a bomber escort mission with a P-39N1. My plane had taken some hits, was short of gas so, with my AI wingman in tow I headed for a friendly base that was close to the lines.

When I landed a little hard, broke a strut and the plane skidded halfway off the main runway. As it stopped I heard the air raid sirens going and saw a couple of low flying planes approaching fast. I didn't see the AA firing and figured this base might not have any guns so I panicked and bailed out of my plane before it was strafed.

My pilot jumped out and ran across the runway just in time to be run over by my AI wingman who was coming in for a landing. The approaching "enemy" planes turned out to be 2 other AI planes coming home. My wingman's plane didn't even so much as blow a tire running me down.

Killed by the AI again.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Aye, luckily, I had it mapped to the arrow keys from flying Ratas and Wildcats, just thought I'd try it on the off-chance.

Is it just me or is the Il2 very prone to having the rudder and elevator controls cut by rear hits? I always get a nice collection of burns and holes on the plane but can't get it back to base due to cut elevators.

IMO, yes. It seemed to go that way about the time of 3.0 or 4.01, can't remenber which. That was when I more or less stopped flying it so much online, it ceased to be fun, losing your elevators so easily. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>What's the problem with no elevators?? Not bragging but with much practice I got so I could not only RTB, but land without them in most planes. Although it ain't easy. Think that's a big deal?? Twice I have chased down and shot down enemy planes after having lost my elevator. Once in a early P-47 and once in a Hurricane equipped with Russian guns.
