Let me know yours if you ever try it out!

I want to but programming is done through C# and I only know C++. There are a lot of good tutorials though so I might try it out a bit after a couple days of relaxing from writting finals (just wrote my last one today). And if I do get around to trying it, I'll let ya know what its like http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hello

Since my dream job is to be a creative director, and I'm pretty sure that Patrice Desilets said in a video interview that he majored in Cinema.

So my first question is: Is cinema a good major for college to get into video games?

I've heard that other video game developers have majored in Cinema and then moved to video games.

My second question is what kind of grades to you need to major in cinema?

And if it's not too much trouble, and if you don't know the answers yourself, I was wondering if you could ask Mr. Desilets... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Hey princeofyo!

Yes, Pat graduated from a Major in cinema.
I'd say that yes, Major in cinema is good to get in the game industry. It's teaches you about some of the most important aspect of the creative director's role of visually telling a story and keeping your audiences attention with details and technics. We also have a scriptwriter that was coming from the cinema (If I'm not wrong).

In Canada, you do 5 years of high school (US is 6 years and then hop to the university) and 2 years of college. Then you go to the university for 3 years for your major.
(Guys correct me if I'm wrong, about the US)

Cheers!

To practice with, I recommend you use Endorphin. Its pretty easy to use (thanks in part to the video tutorials provided) and is supported by some pretty big game studios such as SOE, Lucas Arts, and Volatile (the makers of Saints Row). The only draw back to the free version is that you cannot export files without purchasing the full version. Here's a link to the Endorphin LE download section:

And here are the tutorial vids:

MESSAGE TO RHYS:

Hey everyone, I asked this before but it was never addressed to my satisfaction, I'm 14 and I live in Australia, I just started learning C++ (as in 1 week ago) I want to start doing character models in XSI. At the moment I can write advanced html (yes its outdated) and I can do advanced picture/video editing. I want to know what I should do if I want to become a member of a dev team later in my life. What to work towards and other things you may think of,

Thanx in advance, Rhys
_____________________________________

Again, maybe like Assassin1994, you should take a look at the first few pages of the original thread where I've answered similar questions.

And one that looked like this one. First found the field that drives you the most and stick to it. You talk about programming in C++, interested into learning character modeling and doing video editing and web html programming. These are different point of interrested that doesn't really connect together, or you'll never get hire anywhere for a little of this and a little of that. Choose one and become the best in it!

You want to program? Build stuff at home, do tutorials and go to school in that field. Before you get to your 20s you'll be real good and probably be working in the field or any other programming job.

You want to model in-game or cinematics character? Study the human anatomy. Check traditional artist and study their paintings. Practice and practice by doing tutorial and stuff. Draw...

You want to be a webdesigner? heu... well... be a webdesigner http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I don't know, maybe build your own site, other friend site. Practice! Go into webdesign school. etc...

You goal is to be part of a dev team, but there are dev team in tons of domain... If your goal is to become member of a dev team in the game industry, I'd stick to your first two picks. There is no webdesigner in our dev team! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

JN, thx for the reply and the links and i guess i just worded my question wrong. :P When i said "storyboard" i guess i ment a game design doc. I looked at the links and i have all the components. I have written out, story, characters, vehicles, weapons, features, and a lot more. So what should i do now? I was thinking of making a flash game about my idea. Is that worthwhile?

You're welcome! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, a few years ago (like 10 years) you could build your idea and bring it to a developper hopping that he would produce your game. When your design was real cool, they would! Now... it doesn't happend that often, like...never!

There still some hope though! Have a look at contest like this one: Too much imagination (http://www.toomuchimagination.ca/).

Where you can send you game design ideas and receive price for. There are probably other contest like this one that might help you get your idea on the market.

Maybe building a flash version would be a great idea!

Good luck!

i have a few questions but there are a few things before i start though:first im sorry if there are some questions to specif to AC in any way and i understand you cant answer certain questions. second reading 14 pages is kinda daunting so im sorry if my questions have been asked before.

my 1st question is: what knid of jobs are there in the gaming community.well....the ones involved in creating the game and what do they do exactly and if you know of any sites that might explain a little about them and what they do it would be greatly appreciated if u could put some links up.and if there any free programs that could let me do a few things such as creating a chracter or something could u post them as well.

2nd question: is there really a set time in which the game has to be done or is it when everything is good to go.

3rd question:what are all the games ubi. Montreal has made?

4th question: if everyting gos as planned how many AC are planned?

and last but not least what is your favorite games? and why

HI Essinians,

I understand that this might not be the answer you expected, but you might found very interresting the reading of these 14 pages. Most of your questions were answered previously. Since you are mostly interrested in these subjects, the reading should not be a pain in the a$$. The second page provide you with some answers and links. From the "what kind of jobs" to the "what are the steps in creating a videogames".

There are more than 30 games created by Ubi Montreal. I've found a few here: Ubi Games (http://www.jeuxvideopc.com/jeux/developpeur-746-ubisoft-montreal/)

All of them on the wiki: Ubisoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubisoft)

My favorite games now are: Vegas, SChttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifA, Gears of Wars, Wii games.

Mario is my favorite of all time, along with Zelda, R6 series, etc...

Cheers!

Portable is around 6mths.
Consoles games dev is around 1 1/2 to 3 years.
Next-gen games (Not taking about X360 or PS3, but when in a transitory period around each 4 years): can take up to 4 years.

I reckon I've been mod the longest - going on two years or something now. But mods aren't employed by Ubi, so if you're looking for the person who works for Ubi who's been posting here the longest it's either UbiRazz or JN - Razz being a (former) Community Manager and JN being a Dev.

i was curious because in the E3 live demo the targets william monferrat, after saladin released him from captivity (1188) he lived in Tyre with his sons until he died in the summer of 1191 (late summer ties in with Acre falling to the crusaders on july 12th 1191 [were told acre is in crusader hands during the game]) but no mention of the city of tyre has been made

Hi there !

First of all, let me introduce myself: I'm actually working with JN006 on Assassin's Creed as a level designer.

ifiwerearichman, you've got a pretty interesting question here that alot of people might also be asking themself. You have to know that a level designer might get involve into many different steps during the production of a game. It also depends on wich project you are working on because as the team gets bigger, the more specific your job will be.

As an exemple, here on AC i'm scripting alot in the engine. The LD team is also pretty big so that's why the tasks are split into micro teams. That means that some of my teammates are doing some conception, like planning what's going to happen during the game based on the script, some others are affected to the city life playing with the different ingredients to make the game full of life and interactions and some others are more into game structure of the whole game. Some are also playing good part of the game design job by prototyping stuff & by developping game systems.

Most of the time, as a level designer, you have something like 20% of your work that is related to conception: planning a level, designing the environement, balancing difficulty curves, planning the rythm & emotions that we wanna create in multiple situations by using a specific layout and all the ingredients that the player can interact with. After that, 80% of your job is to physically integrate in the engine what was planned on paper. A level designer is also doing some 3D stuff, but it's more something like basic geometry that the LA (like JN006) will eventually give a "magic touch" to once the work is done. If there's no real camera specialist on the project, then you are also the one who's responsible of the integration of it into the level by making shure that all the views are helping the player to understand the environement & the action. At the same time, then you can testify if the initial intention can be felt by playing the level. You are also involved alot into debug phase cauz many bugs doesn't only comes from the progs =S.

As you can see, our job involve alot of creativity, as you are the one who's responsible to make the game fun with what you have in your hands to create different gameplay situations but it's also a good mix of technical skills.

To sum things up, I shall say that this job title gets you into multiple tasks and depending of the company for who you are working for and also the size of the project, it might be a totaly new experience and that's what is cool about it. You always learn from your everyday work & every single game that you start working on makes your job very diversified as you have to play with many different aspects of the game.

I hope I answered well to your questions. Don't hesitate to ask more about it =)

the good news is no spending 3 days just riding from masyaf to jerusalem

i was curious because in the E3 live demo the targets william monferrat, after saladin released him from captivity (1188) he lived in Tyre with his sons until he died in the summer of 1191 (late summer ties in with Acre falling to the crusaders on july 12th 1191 [were told acre is in crusader hands during the game]) but no mention of the city of tyre has been made </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I have to remind you of Jade's diary, where she says that "this game is BASED on historical facts"..."maybe not killed by the Assassins, but, they could have been"

Guess that's an example of it, then! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

how do you come up with a character like altair?
i dont mean altair himself but in general how you come up with a char like that?

JN006
02-12-2007, 08:24 PM
it's the art director's responsability to give you the guideline to follow. What he wants and how he imagine's him. All of that also follow a certain art direction given by the project itself. Concept art are then built to get the idea of the character. Once a concept is approuved, sometimes, a modelsheet (Front, side, rear view) is drawn for the modeler to get the exact details required in his modeling. The modeler can sometime be the persons that draw the idea of the character and get it approuved as well.

Lets say its a combination of the above!

I'll only answer the last question cauz it's the one that I find the most interesting =p

I've never read anything about Jade like her bio or stuff like that and the only thing I know about it is that she speaks very well in french, even if she has a noticeable accent. =p

But more seriously, she's a very nice person and she knows what her job is: she really proves it everyday. She is working very hard and the only reason why she is the actual producer of a game like AC is because of her potential, her talents and knowledge. Two thumbs up for jade !

I'll leave the other answers to JN ^_^

1-Ubi QC is a new studio that recently openned. There are around 150 persons working there and are mostly working on portable version of our games. The studio's mandat might change, as more people get hire. For now, they're working on DS and PSP games.

2-I'm not sure as to when or if we'll see a demo of Assassins Creed! I cannot really answer this one, and it's probably the reason why Pretorien just ran away from answering it, even if he's very good at answering the third one! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

3- (BIS) I unfortunatly cannot answer directly this question. You have to understand that Pretorien, Mr. Miagi and I are under a NDA.

Stay tuned 'cause new stuff regarding AC is coming out soon! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif SHUT!

4- It's not the first time I talk about Jade. She a very talented co-worker and she's carrying the whole project, with a few others, on their shoulders. She got where she is now for one reason: Talent! I already posted one of Jade's bio, you might find interresting reading it. HERE! (http://www.elecplay.com/index.php?template=ep)

And we Quebequers!!(NEW WORD)have to be really proud about Ubi montreal to be making big projects like that.. montreal is becoming such a important city in gaming and that means more jobs for our talents here !! yeah right on what's better than playing a game that's made by quebequers!!

No matter how long Ac will take to born I'll have it for sure in my collection.. it's seems like it's the game that's missing in my collection since I've beat down rainbow six vegas !!

Hey Lpcrispo!

I like both. I'd say that mix of both is the key and might be the key for awhile! Not everything can be mocaped so theres job for the animator, but it's true to say that more animator are cleaning mocap sessions instead of creating keyframes content. Sure, there will need keyframe stuff for a while, on props for instance, but it's also cool for an animator to animate the characters!

I think that we have it, since we have a huge bank of softwares that we can install. Whether it's used in production, I can't tell...

Yes, there is place for people in communication in company like ubisoft. Public relations, customer relations (games for a TV show, movie, etc.), some artist recruiter may have these type of diploma. You can eventually become assistant producer, producer, project manager, etc...

I'd say that this type of diploma can open door for you in the industry.

I've spent the last hour reading through all 16 of these pages so that I don't repost something and sound like an idiot. So my question simply is:

How do you become a game tester.

Is there some kind of degree you can have? Or do you have to have experiance with coding and design and what not so when you encounter a bug you can write up a way to fix it?

I should probably have some more questions but their most likely going to be about programming, and I'll ask those later.

Kind of a stupid question (and one that the devs here might not be able to answer) but on average, how many lines of codes are there for a decent AAA game. I ask this because I just finished developing my very own Blackjack game (text based only though) and upon reflection, was quite suprised how many lines of codes it took after extensivly refining it.

Yes, there is a website (http://jobs.ubisoft.ca/en/) where you can check the jobs and submit you resume.

You can always come the Ubisoft MTL office and leave you stuff at the reception. It will be forwarded to the HR department where they'll study your posting.

It true for tester as well, but that the website doesn't show the avalaible openings. Bring your resume to Ubi MTL office and they'll help you out!

Cheers and best of luck

I answered the how-to in my previous post.
Regarding degrees or coding experience, I'd say no. YOu need to be pasionnate by videogames and play a lot! For what I know about it. We have a database where the bugs you find get forwarded to the proper artist/programmer/etc.. who will fix it according the importance of the bug.

Some tester are part of the dev team and they are the one I interact with the most often. I build something and I want to make sure that this works well, I ship him my house/landmark/etc... and he'll crash on it, so it becomes bullproof after his remarks. Big Kudos to our devteam tester!

Games like Gears of War and Assassin's Creed (among others) have gone to great lenghts to create (or recreate) a specific architectural style for their worlds. Do you have anyone on staff who was educated as an architect? Or any architects used as consultants? It seems like with the amount of 3d modelling work that many architects do there might be some opportunities for work in the video game industry. Does this happen, or did it happen with AC? If you can't answer about AC specifically, what about at Ubi in general?

(Curious because I'm a graduating architecture student with a specific interest in Medieval Architecture, and architecture in the game looks incredibly convincing)

Level artist does have some basic architecture knowledge, in example, in regards to architectural styles. (What's gothic, what's arabic, what's roman and in which city these specific types should be found). Since these models will never be built in real life, we are not asked to be as precise as an architect in regards to our models. We have to respect the architectural style of the building from ground up, can sometime mix them a little (when a district in an arabic city is occupated by jewish peoples for example, the architecture is affected even though the city is mainly arabic). I have not meet any architect during the production phase. We have been doing a lot of research, that's for sure! Websites, Googled it, rent books at the librairy, the project bought books, other origins dev team members have also helped, everything we could find to inspire ourselves. Historian have helped clarifing ideas and vision but no architect have been helping us in the build of our cities.

There is place in the gaming industry for architect that knows how to model great in-games pieces. Then, they might not be considered more an architect than a 3D artist. A lot of the architect are now using 3D soft, but in this industry, there is nothing that guaranted you, you're going to build only houses! You might be asked to build props/objects. What you also need to understand is that this job ask you a great techy knowledge. All the in-games constraint are not always easy to follow, and is also breaking the creativity at some points. (Engine specs, optimization and real-time processing, amount of tris and textures allowed, Collision on which the player interact with, etc, etc...)

I went to school with an architect, which has now made the transition towards game.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
JN006

no i think he work hard on 3DS max to become better and better each time he use 3DS max. Like Pascal Blanche ( he work on AC ) he do a lot of stuff with 3Ds max ( and maya , Z brush ... )

Question : Will the game use the Sixaxis with the PS3 ??

I also work on personal contract that are not related to games, so yes, I do work at home! I love what I do so it's not a pain in the a$$ for me to work a little at home. Sometime I'm a little sick of it though!

For your information Pascal Blanché does not work on AC, he's on another project.

And it true that sometime when I look at a building or anything else, I ask myself how I would do this in 3D... I know... I a little crazy!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

You see no crossbow ? Wow, on the main non-gameplay trailer he uses it on the first guy to kill and then stabs the crossbow into the next guy, jumps in the air and stabs him with the hidden blade.

What I meant was that the crossbow was visible on his back in the CG trailers but not in the in-game footage.

Dude, not to sound like a jerk or anything, but this isn't really a good time to ask JN about when to expect new stuff on AC since Tlepolemus7 started to make racist remarks against french people, and JN being fluent in French, obviously didn't take it so kindly. Personnaly, I think that it's a huge mistake for the mods not to ban him but that would be hypocritical of me since I was out of line myself after discovering that the AC related GC lecture was cancelled. Infact, I hope JN holds true to his statement and doesn't return ti'll after AC is released cause he's just an easy target for people to get angry at (myself included) for any negative press on the game, unless if he wants to make a new account to conceal his identity. For shame to all of us, for shame http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif.

Hmm, well JN specialized in 3D modelling, Mr. Miagi on the other hand is a programmer for Ubi Montreal though I don't think he's been very active on the forums lately. Its too bad though cause I'm taking computer science classes myself.

I'm studying at the University of Saskatchewan and am taking Computer Science II or CMPT 115.3, along with my math and english class. So far for this class, we've done references, memory allocation, lists, stacks, queues, trees (mostly binary), and will be doing advanced sorting and intro to object oriented programming in the remaining weeks of the term. Feel free to post what comp sci. classes your taking and what uni you go to if you want. Toodles.

I am from Pakistan(reason for my english too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif) so I didn't even know where University of Saskatchewan is. I had to Google it to find out where it is. When I saw Canada, ubi soft Montreal came into my mind http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

I study in National University also know as FAST probably heard about it but I doubt that. I am currently doing my BS in computer science and I am in my sixth semester. Hey I have studied all the topics you mentioned in my previous semester and OOP (object oriented programming) is one of my favorite areas so I would probably be able to help you. Ask anything you want to know.

Ya my university doesn't have a strong cirriculum for Computer Science, our University is better known for those that intend to study Political Science and Agricultre instead. So if you're in your 6th semester, then I take it you're finishing your 3rd year if I'm not mistaken. I'm curious to know what you've done in your previous semesters since this is only my second (perhaps studying different programming languges prior to the one you are studying now? I've only been programming with C/C++ up to now). But ya, there's only 1 month left for the semester so I may require your expertise some time soon http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Well, ciao for now.

wa_neo

You are right I am finishing my 3rd year. I thought at first that your
University is computer science based but now I understand that its a not.

You asked me about what I have studied it seemed like you wanted to know what tools I have done example java etc. Well my friend the thing is that in my university no tool is taught explicitly teachers only teach the fundamentals of that course and you have to learn the tool for example c++ by yourself sometimes lab sessions are conducted to teach those tools but basically focus is on the concepts.

So in different courses I learned different tools to see the practical implementation of the course. Okay lets see languages that I know are C, C++, Assembly, Java and little bit of C# but my experties are in C++. In each course one learns a new tool to implement the concepts learned(example in databases course I learned oracle and mysql) What I want to say they aren't important if you know the concepts you can learn any tool within weeks if you know what basic things.

Do ask me anything I would like to help you or anybody, thats if i can .

I'm just curious if you've done any work with API's (preferably Open GL) cause I'm dying to start making a game engine. If so then perhaps you can post some of your works and some sample tutorials (though we may have to PM for that). Also, what IDE do you use? Thx in advance.

wa_neo
03-09-2007, 11:29 AM
API's is application programmer's interface and now a days if you are programming anything, just think you are using api's they are simply built in function calls to interact with the platform. So definitely I have worked on my api's for example in java you can't built a single useful application with out using api's.
But from you question seemed you were talking about api's for graphics I have worked a little on DirectX, but I have never got a chance to work on OpenGl but both of them more or less are same for a beginner I mean the concepts of cameras, map, Scene is in both of them. So if you learn one you learn the other one too I won't say you become expert in both of them because the more you work on them the more you start to differentiate b/w them.

Hmmm game engine wow thats a nice thing. But my friend I would not recommend you to start building a game engine cuz frankly its too much hard work and very little fun. Start building little games I am saying this cuz I think you are on a very beginners level. I remember the first day i learned about cin and cout http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I started planing for developing games.

First start building little games example car race , chess , tetris I made car race and chess (double player only) in my first semester they were in text mode and if a dumber like me can built them any one can its so much fun you I just enjoyed then entire experience. After that I could not give time to game's programming that much because of the university and kind of my other projects stopped there although I used to read stuff on games programming now and then.

About the gamesengine there are alot of freely available game engiens available go to devmaster.net (my fav is crystal space) and you will find alot of them I advice use one of them and build a small game of your own (thats a very tough thing I couldn't do that because of the time constraint. Maybe you can.

So get the overall programming concepts know how games work and then start from building small games you can build them within a week and in future use already built in game engines .

About the tutorials google it you will find a ton of them but the best one for you would be .

Hey by the way maybe I have been mistakkend one can also call a game engine the infinite loop of the game .(I thought you meant a full fledge game engine ) if thats what you are talking about then go to cooding4fun (google it) and go to Game's Programming in DirectX its a series and will take you one step ahead at a time.

Finaly about the ide's I have used alot of them. for C++ the best one to me is VC6 for java netbeans5.5 (for C# definately Visual Studio 2005) are my fav. There are reasons why I like those. But the post is getting pretty long so I would stop here do argue with me on anything I admire that and don't think eveything I say is correct have your own opinion, I can only share my experience.

Secondly, I live in Florida, and in hopes of doing some sort of internship over the summer, i contacted Nival studions, (the most pronounced studio in Florida,) and they didn't reply. Wooo, been a while since people posted here so hopefully the dev's are still around. Anywho, I've started to experiment XNA and so far its goin pretty good (got a model to show up plus move/rotate using input). What I want to do next is to include a camera that can rotate around my main model through user input but the whole concept of rotation in 3-space seems rather complicated. Perhaps someone here have any advice or know where I can find some tutorials on how to accomplish this? Thanks in avance http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif.

i don't know if the devs are answering any more questions, but i was wondering what physics engine you guys were using? you guys have two or three games in the PhysX list, so did you use that engine for Assassin's Creed? also, on the topic of Ageia, what do you think of their idea to add a third processor, the PPU? are you planning on adding support for it on your PC games or do you think it is just another fad?

I'd like to know what sort of research went into the Future/Sci-Fi part of the game. Not that I mind fake-science, it's just other people do, and cancer doesn't work like Warren Vidic says it does.

I'd also like to know what kind of casting process brought in their voice actors and the development of the characters like Marik, Robert, Warren himself. What was key to catching and creating all these characters?

How'd they assemble the story? And what do they have to say to those who were disapointed that what they thought was a historical Assasinating game turned out to have heavy sci-fi elements?

I'd like the record set straight on if the reason Altair is the only Assassin we see who is missing a finger is that he's the only Master assassin in the clan or if it's just a design flaw that the NPC designers overlooked.

After watching the AC2 walk through I just want to know if the PC version will have better textures and better physics, especially the textures, they were woeful in that vid on Xbox (especially at the end when he puts the manhole cover back).
