On the night before enemy forces invaded our country, concurrent testing was concluded by the Scientific Research Institute of VVS and LEE NKAP in testing the effectiveness of elongated automatic slats on the MiG-3 namely " 3373. On the experimental flight testing centre No.1 lead engineer L.A. Balian, pilots Balynin and Uliahin, deputy military representative A.N. Nahmanovich (from the flight centre), Lieutenant Colonel P.M. Stefanovskiy, Senior Lieutenant A.G. Kubyshkin (from the Scientific Research Institute of VVS), pilots U.K. Stankevich and P.M. Polnyshenko (from LEE) evaluated the wing slats in various conditions.

Positive results were expected. They noted that the fighter ceased to stall without warning, the fighter also proved easier to control while executing aerobatic maneuvers (the plane was very forgiving to mistakes made by the pilot). The MiG-3 was easily leveled prior landing; in other words, it gave more control and did not have a tendency to roll over to the side when the pilot pulled on the control stick.

The results noted: Automatic slats, length 2004 mm, on the serial MiG-3 considerably eliminated stalls and increased controllability when speed was lost. Before a stall, the aircraft would warn the pilot by rocking, and when a stall was imminent, the aircraft dipped its nose and banked to the right. The installation of the slats considerably simplified piloting and made it possible to control the aircraft with a loss of speed.

From empirical tests it was seen that fighters with €œsmooth€ wings, critical speed leveled off at 190 km/h but when the slats were added the speed dropped to 155-160 km/h. In certain conditions, for example when turning, the MiG-3 completely stopped stalling. Its behaviour tended to give more warnings than with 1573 mm slats, which were already beginning to be discontinued on serial production fighters.

During the period from the 13th to the 14th of June, two fighters were tested, namely " 3650 and 3656, additionaly equipped with two below-wing BK machine guns and slats. The testing was done by a €œstandard€ brigade under the command of engineer L.A. Balian (OKO). The majority of test flights were done by test pilots A.I. Zhukov, V.N. Savkin, V.T. Sahranov, noting that thanks to the slats, piloting the plane was a lot easier. However, increasing taken-off weight by 100 kg, for example, negatively affected some very important characteristics of the plane. Having said that, empirical tests showed that below-wing machine guns reduced the maximum land speed by 35 km/h, and on the highest altitude of 7800 m €" by 20 km/h. Completely removing the canopy cover reduced speed by 36 km/h. Take off and landing characteristics were not fully tested but pilots noted that taking off on an over-weight plane became sluggish and slow.

With comparison to the MiG-3 " 2109, which tended to stall early, planes fitted with slats fell [stalled] faster and with more energy but came out quickly and easily. On the MiG-3 " 3650 no difference was seen between stalls towards the left or right, an unpleasent heating of the controls was absent, which was seen earlier.

Zhukov fully spoke out his personal opinion: €œThe slats did not improve manoeverabilty and probably even worsened it.€. At the same time he noted that with the said plane, range increased substantially, and the probability of stalls while diving from large angles of attack was reduced. By Zhukov€s instruction, the MiG was to be built in series with three synchronous high caliber machine guns for intermediate pilots. For more advanced pilots, an option was to be equipped with five Berezina machine guns; SHKAS on MiG-3s, in his opinion, was not needed.
