Has anyone ever tried to build their own controllers?

Looking at the back of my computer I have 2 gameports... At work we use them as remotes with pots and buttons hooked up to them.

Each one of these game ports can support 4 individual axis inputs, so I started thinking...

Get some 100k faders (like the kind you would find in an audio board, if they make 100k ones) and build a little control box with 4 faders in it.

You could have Elevator Trim, Mixture, Prop pitch and something else (I have a throttle already).

THen I started thinking hey, use BOTH gameports at once and build the ULTIMATE engine management controller. You could have 8 buttons for doing various engine related things, and 8 little faders, you could have a mixture and prop pitch fader, 4 throttle controls for a 4 engine ship, 4 buttons for starting each engine seperatly, and 4 more to fire extinguishers on each engine. As well two more faders to do say, elevator trim and rudder trim, or something. Or you could use the buttons for toggling various engines and only have one set of engine controls, and then a bunch of trim settings for elevator, rudder, and airelons...

Drool....

The possibilites are endless..

All in a simple wooden base..

I'm so building one...

Course, after writing this 50 people are going to say "Everyone is doing that" and "Use the search function ******" or something.

Maybe use a multiturn pot to make a more realistic trim control... hmmm....

There have been posts here in the past about home-built controllers. Someone was even updating a thread he started that discussed what stage he was at in construction.

Unfortunatley I haven't seen it in a while, but someone may jump in and provide some links.

What problems did you run into?
