Hé guys & girls !

This week our AirForce exists for 90 years already!
What i like to know is how the Dutch airforce was performing in those disturbing days of May,1940 when they were attacked by the Germans and their Luftwaffe without any declaration of war.
I heard that the Luftwaffe lost 350 planes in just a few days while the dutch only had a handfull of planes from which there were no more than 25 fighter planes (Fokker D-XXI types) while most of them were destroyed on the ground!
If these figures are correct, it was quite an achievement by a handfull of men and women !
Has anyone more data on this ?

Thanks in advance..

ps I know that the Finns were using this Fokker also..and that R. Mutt is modelling one for FB !

my Greetings, Jos van Dijck

Salute to the dutch. however, the most lost planes were ju52 , many of them crashed while landing on overfiled airfields.

Transportgeschwader KG z.b.V.2 lost about 90 % of the planes near Den Haag in such an " accident ".
it was a big waste of planes .
from 430 Ju 52 almost 2/3 were total losses or heavy damaged.

Bavaria is one of the oldest European states.
It dates back to about 500 A.D., when the Roman Empire was overcome by the onslaught of Germanic tribes. According to a widespread theory, the Bavarian tribe had descended from the Romans who remained in the country, the original Celtic population and the Germanic invaders.

The Dutch millitary did begin flying as early as 1913 but, only in 1953, The airforce became independant of the army.

hi Jos

this is what i know about the 5 days of may 1940.
the RDAF had something of 60 fighters (about 36 D.XXI & 24 G.1 fighters) on the first day of war lots of fighters were destroyed on the ground but the ones that survived the bombing fought like lions (Dutch lions/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ) the Fokker G.1's that were on airbase Bergen couldn't get of the ground cose the field was too soft for the heavy fighters. so most of the G.1's were destroyed on the ground. most of the enemy planes that were downed, were downed by AAA guns mostly Ju52's. but the fighter pilots did some good fighting as well. here's a link to a story of one Dutch Fighter pilot named Bob van der Stok (it's in Dutch)
als je eenmaal op de site ben kies dan onder op de pagina het onderwerp: meidagen van '40

here's a link to the same story but this time in english (for our friends who don't speak Dutch) and even more storys of Dutch pilots all in english
