This Yak-1 is one of the planes flowen by a Soviet woman pilot, Lilya Litvak, who a the time was the flight commander of 73 IAP. Litvak went on to shoot down a total of 12 enemy planes before being killed in action on September 1, 1943 over Orel. She was 21.

I could go on for ages about this, the whole 296 IAP, the 586th IAP, 125th GvBAP, and the 46th GvNBAP, but I think, this time, I won't.

Me too, think i'll take a nap this time. Amazing how these threads start every time someone discovers Lilya for the first time

Why? It bears repeating that there were women fighter pilots, and some were very good.

cheers,

That it does, but I figured it would be enough to say what I did and give Billy_the_Kid of finding the joy I had when I researched all these things and found them out. Rather than just telling. The discovery is the exciting part.

Wasn't her husband in the air at the same time she died/dissapeared? Very sad stuff. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

The makings of a big budget movie there, be sure. Much better subject than the Dam Busters II and wondering what to call the d*g. Anyone got Peter Jacksons email.....?

Negative, Feathered...

She was engaged to a Salomatin (spelling?), he died before Litvak, trying to demonstrate his combat worthiness after a period of convalensence in a series of low-level aerobatics; for some reason he lost control of the Yak, stalled and spun in. Apparently Lila was watching. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
