View Full Version : Confession Time: How good/bad a pilot are you?

TC_Stele

I've got to admit that I can be pretty bad sometimes. I fly the P-40 almost exclusively online when I get the chance and at times I jump into a furball at 500 meters thinking I'll get away with it, and sometimes I do, but I usually come out pretty toast. However when I have the patience I'll get my altitude, assess the situation of a furball, and then engage with good results. I also like to fly the underated planes, hoping that others will get too cocky and mess up. Usually I take advantage of it right away, but other times I'm better off having not taken off.

At times I'll ignore looking around for bandits. I don't mean nearby bandits but the high lurking phantom FW-190s. Whenever I see them at 4000m+ I....get....out...of the area!

Well, you asked, and I don't like to toot my own horn, but I am the finest Virtual Fighter Pilot to pick up a joystick. Some may think that's an arrogant statement to make, but I have to admit it's the complete truth.

I try to fly them like real airplanes and that puts me at a disadvantage online. Might give in someday and try the Orca-straight-up-rotate-peek, the inverted-look-around-in-red-view, or the flaps/trim on a slider, or the prop pitch exploit and other hardcore gamer tricks I haven't seen yet but for the most part I just try to survive long enough to get in some landing practise http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh, I don't know. I remember you cleaned my clock several times on the Ubi server back in my early IL-2 days when you were flying under the Billfish handle. Now admittedly I was a n00b, but you sure made short work of me. You saluted me each time as I remember. Quite civil of you I thought.

I have grand moments of glory pulling off perfect manouvers and surprising my enemies with the swiftness of my attacks.

These are however overshadowed by doing stupid things like crashing into the back of planes I'm chasing, blacking out during a harsh manouvers and crashing into the ground, colliding into wingmen while cruising, skip bombing myself into a ship, cutting the throttle too quickly when landing and becoming a lawn dart at the end of the runway.

I'm however proud to so I've never once online taken off using the runway. Thats a joke BTW.

I don't know, really. It all depends on my enemies. Sometimes I lose 10 sorties in a row, sometimes I win 10 sorties in a row. What comforts me nowadays, that I know pretty well, why I lost or won. It puts the results into perspective, make me humble when I win, and cheers me up when I lose.

I fly like a glob of fecal matter hurled at you by the beligerent chimp at your local zoo.Sometimes the target area gets "peppered";more often than not,the 'projectile'(pilot) ends up breaking apart in the trees.

I still rip off P51's wing under high G.
If i fly P47 and you're at my 6 o'clock, i bail out before you pull the triger. This way, pilots has more chanse to survive.
F4U, this is funny cause i don't know how to hit enemy plane.
Flat spin in P39 is my best defensive manuever.
But i realy hate when i ram fighter planes. Happens me all the time.

I would say im a good all round pilot.

I am an excellent ground pounder in most planes, im goodat dogfighting, using a variety of tactics depending on situations, and i can fly pretty much any plane well. Dificulty settings arent a problem.

Of course, it takes alot of practice in all of these areas to get good like me.

I remember flying a Hurricane online in an early war scenario, when all of a sudden red tracers start zipping past my canopy. I freaked out and threw the plane into a series of violent evasive maneuvers. The bad guy stayed with me through it all and those tracers kept coming. I got lower and lower as I ducked and weaved and eventually I was skimming the treetops trying to use the lay of the land to lose this guy. He would not be shaken.

I maneuvered too hard, lost all my speed and stalled. Crashing into the trees. My opponent flew over the column of smoke.

It was a guy in a Stuka. How idiotic am I? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I have my moments.

I'm usually winging for a mate,so i fly top cover while he does the lead donating.

sometimes i can be good, other times i do some really stupid things.

e.g last night,im in a 190(I know how to fly it,just after a while that goes out the window & i try flying it like i usually fly my dogfighters)...I pick up an enemy fighter,so i dive away, meet a friendly, who has an enemy companion also...so I try to get onto my teammates opponent....and get shot down by a Hurricane! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

comments on chat after went a bit like :how the hell did you get shot down by a hurricane in a 190????11,thats not possible!

one 'nOOb' moment out of many http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

then theres other times my wingman and I tear up a load of 109's in P38's and both survive, turn n burning the 109's on the deck & getting away with it.

lol

I`d say by flying skills I`m about little above average.

What I have though is very good mix of situational awareness and caution and that other pilots don`t have.A mere 12% of online pilots I`d say.

In the end my real flying skills are hardly put into "life" because I do everything to stay out of dangerous situations. So when the mission`s ending I will be one of the few left intact.

Many pilots I see get 3-5 kills/mission and get killed every 5missions.That is not a good pilot by my definition.

And about as fruity as a three-dollar bill. You should try not to make it so obvious.

<Gets out his golden trumpet>

If I'm having fun, it's a good day. And I always have fun flying. It's a game and I treat it as such. When a game stops being fun, it's time to put it away.

I fly smart, turn smarter and can shoot a fly off of your rear-view mirror from 500m. I know the game inside and out, it's limitations and exploits and how to get the absolute most out of every plane that I fly in this game.

My PC is completely optimized for flying this game online and it is the only game that I play on my PC. High-end Barton system still cuts it well for this game with a little tweaking.

I think my best quality is my ability to adapt to any given situation. Give me lemons and I make lemonade. I only need one engagement with an online pilot to 99.5% assess his skill level, abilities and threat level. I know if he can be ignored for a few mins while I shoot his wingman down, or if I have to take him out before his wingman.

As RBJ once said, it's like The Matrix streaming down in 1s and 0s at me for every situation. I'm calculating distance, speed, time to target, range of guns, energy and other crucial situational awareness tactics almost unconsciously. I do love to fly and must get my private license someday. I'm saving my dimes.

And lest we talk of my dive-bombing prowess. I'm actually at the point where I hit the target plane with the bomb before it explodes. I love de-winging a plane with a bomb, watching him spin in a circle for a sec while he's on one wheel and then he go BOOM! from the 2-3 sec delayed fuse. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Not so good a clearing my mates 6's as all my kills are made from within 100m (convergence is at 100) and it can take to long for me to get there...

I fly exclusively the spit IXe... and full real setting only (or near full real (speed bar))

And some days I'm even suckier than that.

With Icons I can fight and fly pretty well.
Without Icons I'm Mister Friggin MaGoo (you oldtimers know who I'm referring to). In a P-47 I can lay eggs pretty well now. In a dogfight I'm next to hopeless. I've had the rare day when I adequately covered my wing mate but mostly I'm flying in circles trying to keep from getting my *** shot off...

Sigh....

In my own modest way Id say im a good IL2 pilot. I usually like to fly energy fighters on whichever team needs the numbers but occasionally I get p-issed off and take a Spitfire and royally kick some a-ss.

You were lucky the other night Danjama that you crashed into that bomber, I was stalking you and your wingman and wanted to nail you after you brought my P47 down. In the end I settled for shooting your wingman down and a Ju 88 before having to rtb ammo dry.

I love the Mk. IX e CW for those few extra 20mm rounds and the .50 cals. But the VIII looks the best.

Its a great alternative to the Fw 190 which is my main aircraft. When Im in the Fw 190 I feel like Im a wrecking ball, you only need one 1 sec burst and any plane is toast Ive managed over 10 kills in one online sortie in the Fw 190 A6 against Western Allied opponents. Recently I like flying P47s but HATE it when I cant climb because there are bandits close to base. Last few times I have chosen the P47D10 I have run in to a Bf 109 G2 and before that a MC.205 at around 2500m, at this height you are playing Russian roulette. So I ended up having to take the Spitfire Vb L.F which is a monster under 3000m.

As for FWs, god help me but I love barrel-assing out of the sky in an A9, with Mk-108s in the wings, 1 sec squeeze the target plane into oblivion, and just fly away to do it again and again and again....I almost feel like I'm cheating in a FW, hehe.

Most likely, it will come with maturity and wisdom. Two things that you sorely lack, but then again you're still just a pup. All good things come to those who wait.

I can be a right hellion when all systems are go but when allergies hit I am airborne garbage. At my best I can pull off some really good snap-shots; at my worst I'm scattered all over the ground no matter what I do. Takeoffs vary from bombastic to near-death experiences. Landings are often good if I just sheer my l.g. off. Ordinary virtual flying bores me tremendously---I am not one of those people who will be found taking a long flight in a WINGS OF POWER B-29 in FS2004. A prospective fight brings out my virtual flying gusto. A QMB brawl or two puts me in the right mind to face the day.

FW is nice and all but with it's front view and e-retention(Antons) I consider it far from cheating, weapons are really awsome though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
Currently I'm trying to learn how to sucessfully fight and survive in late war 109's, now that really takes skill...

I'm an excellent pilot. My formation flying, general handling, engine management etc. is very good indeed, like some of the the other posters, I fly in real life and I like to think this shows.

However, as a FIGHTER pilot, I'm awful, I get owned frequently; unless the other guy doesn't see me coming. I'm pretty useful in a bomber, however, and this is where I spend most of my time!

That's one of my favorite things about this game. Bombing. I always load my fighter with bombs for my initial run and then dogfight my way back home. It's also one of my disappointments with this game though, that the Mk. VIII does not carry bombs as it should.

There's such a cool sense of satisfaction when your bomb hits dead on its target. The best is when a guy is landing with a boatload of points and you drop the bomb down the runway in front of him and he blows up as he's coasting in for a landing. Hehehe, vulching for hte win!!!11!!1!!1

As both the FW and Spitfires have their unique strengths and weaknesses, I fall back to tests done over the past few months that showed the Spitfires performing very close to RL numbers.

As you know, it's just two different styles of fighting. A Spitfire can turn and burn OR B and Z. Very effective in the latter because being in a Spit, once things grind down a bit, you still have a turning advantage over the LW birds.

A FW is speed, dive, roll, shoot, and climb away against a Spitfire. Anything more than half a circle spells energy death for the FW against the Spit. Given Ace skills are in both at the time. I just wish roll rates peaked at the right speeds and not at a lower speed, as they do in this series, for most planes.

I'm not the best manueverer around but I can fly anything in the planeset reasonably well. My strong suit is my gunnery, both fixed guns and in turrets as a gunner. Many people talk about the AI making amazing or "impossible" shots, but I make shots as good, usually better than they do flying both as a pilot and as gunners. I grew up on a farm in Indiana and got to be a decent shot with rifles, shotguns. Not so great with pistols though.

When I see whines posted about how good AI defensive bomber gunners are, I have to laugh. Heck, I forgot how to laugh at such rants!! I always think to myself that they are fortunate that the AI gunners are not as good as I am.........They would really cry then....whaaaaaaaaa....

I flew B-17 Flying Fortress II offline ( there was no online ) for two years straight, put myself in the gunner positions most of the time and I got damn good at it.

All that training gives me the advantage of realizing about 10 seconds before most of my opponents just how bad I've screwed up. Hasn't helped me one bit from screwing up, just knowing when I do.

I have good and bad moments. I can take off and land just about anything (HATE landing 109's though), and fly most stuff successfully.

Im not good flying a lot of late war planes, and my days of happily wrenching my Zero or Oscar around in brutal turns have made me a little heavy handed on occassion in birds I have no business abusing in such a fashion (like the Frank).

Im 50/50 in one on one dogfights depending on the planes. I do very well early war, not anywhere near as good late war. I find a lot depends on who I am flying with. With some good teammates, I do well, when clumped in with a bunch of kill score obsessed lone wolves, I dont fare as well.

My best showing was my 2nd week flying online, where I managed to rack up 12 kills to 2 losses and one failed landing. That unfortunately got me labelled as "Dangerous" so now I tend to get smoked a lot... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Last night was 2 for 3 for example......

I'm pretty much a noob... I still haven't figured out wether I'll TnB or BnZ and with that I still haven't really decided on a plane that I would really get to know.

the result is that my combat skills leave a lot to be desired. but I have some good in me too... I've gotten to the point where I almost never crash in landing... unless I am doing an emergency landing with no engine... then I'll survive but my gear won't.

the most fun I have flying online is when I'm flying with someone with TS and all that... I find that I'm much more succesfull then. I like torpedoing ships too. mainly because my dive bombing sucks lol

I'm the best online pilot around.

My evidence?

Simple: It takes great skill, patience, ability and know how to make all my online opponents look so good. Just when they know I've got them, I allow them to reverse the scales and get me.

Trust me, this takes great skill. Only an online pilot with such skill could set himself up to that his oppponent has such an easy time.

I was decent in my day and will be returning to the virtual skies to get my clock cleaned very soon. But I always had a knack for RTB'ing in some of the most FUBAR aircraft usually battle and flak damage. Thus I have always named my aircraft "Flak Bait".

Well, I€m a very poor pilot these days.

Trouble is, I know I could be that much better. I used to be a lot better. I started in €03 in the original Il2 on UBI. I studied the texts, the tactics, learnt from some really great pilots about energy and managing it. I played 4-5 hours virtually every evening and thought about it the rest of the time.

I went to FB because I had a penchant for externals off and cockpit on. The skills whilst different, were nicely transferable. I flew greatergreen 3-4 hours most nights and felt I could hold my own in most company. Saw TrackIR in operation, loved it, bought one.

But then real life intervened, in the shape of a son born the week before the 4.x flight models came out. I€ve never really recovered. I€ve been forever searching for that lost competency, replacing stick time with money spent (wasted?) on a HOTAS, eventually pedals.

So now I am reduced to a regular flight time of about 15 minutes a day, just enough time for a quick sortie in QMB, in order to keep my eye in for the occasional foray online. But it€s so infuriating to know what I should be doing, but not having the muscle memory to do it. On the occasions when I do get 2 or 3 hours to go online, it can take that long to get up to speed, and then it€s over for another 2 weeks.

As you can see I have no chance to go for co-ops, let alone online wars. So I stick to warclouds, maybe Historia if there€s a few on. And there€s so much to do even before you take off; HL,TSd,TS,TrackIR,make sure the right stick profile is loaded, connect, read the brief, work out your route. I sometimes miss the time it was just connect-take off-shoot stuff. But I just can€t go back to fast and furious €˜more arcade€ (no offence meant) servers. I love the stalk or the long range sneak bomb run, but that takes a lot of time.

Even worse, I€ve been trying to master the Tempest. Ain€t that just the bird that takes oodles of time and patience to master and use effectively? 50km round trip to climb to height in a circuitous route so you don€t get jumped with no E. A wasted bounce on a friendly or 3 mins combat then back over the lines to cool the motor and get back up to alt. But it€s hard to be patient when that might be your only sortie for a week. Doesn€t help that my 15€TFT is on it€s way out. I€m lucky if I see stuff 3000 ft below me. With the lack of shooting practice I tend to damage about 5 planes to every kill. Plus, you know, I don€t like to get in the way of the proper experts so I€ll pull off, leave it to someone else, at the drop of a hat. The thing I fear most is hearing €œStathem€s on him€, and I think, oh sh*t, now I actually have to hit the bandit.

Course I can€t fly Spitfire can I? Just not the €˜done€ thing is it?. Only noobs fly Spits don€t they? Don€t want the 40 hour a week experts looking down on me.

Maybe I should. Just grab a IXe and barrel off into a low alt TnB DF. Least I€d enjoy it more. What d€you reckon?

I reckon you've had to reevaluate your priorities the same as we all do on occassion. I'd also reckon that your post is indication enough that you'll be back in the saddle when you're able. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

stathem, congratulations, you have raised a clear attention to an important point: good or bad depends on how much practice time you can get.

This puts the nose-up attitude of some folks in these forums into a perspective, lecturing others on how to fly, how to shoot, how to test, how to practice, forgetting to mention that that their allegedly superior skills were built over years of 2-3 hours per day practice... quite a luxury, I must say.

Anyhow, my answer to your dilemma is that I take a cr@p-plane in the DF room when I am too short on time. This way
- I don't have to fly long times to the target - every noob will come around me and try to shoot me down immediately
- I have quite fun, because my opponents are used to other high-performance planes and they often forget to adapt their combat style to my rarely seen cr@pplane, and make fatal mistakes often
- I have no remaining bad taste in my mouth if I get shot down eventually - what else is expected in a cr@pplane anyway?
- I cannot be called a noob in slow and fragile cr@pplane either.

Good, funny points. And oh so true. The snobbishness of many onliners never fails to crack me up. I love when they call me a noob in my Spitfire, while I'm decimating them. I shoot them down a few more times after that and then I fly their favorite plane, regardless of what it is, and then kill them a few more times. hehehehe

One of my all-time favorites. My first is probably "Rhapsody Rabbit". The one where he is playing Hungarian Rhapsody #2 in a piano concerto and the mouse that lives in the piano is harassing him. Tom and Jerry copied it, too.

"June Bugs" is coming soon. I forget if it's Cartoon Network or TBS, but it's a huge BB marathon over a day or two. I tape them.

Unfortunately, my last tape got over-written with exercise sessions by an over-zealous wife. Before that it was my Super Bowl highlights tapes that I made from the ESPN2 1/2 hour ones they run every year on the day and night before the Super Bowl. I'll have to catch up with those next year.

Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 is used a few times in Warner Bros. stuff...."Rabbit Rhapsody", a scene in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" where Daffy and Donald Duck play grand pianos before bringing out the cannon and an episode of "Tiny Toon Adventures" where a piano is involved - no dialogue, just music. Know any more?

One of it's best uses, IMHO, is the Stella Artois advert with the ice-skating priests...classic stuff all-round.

I submit the following log of transmission between one of my squadmates and myself. All delivered in flat monotone expressions like professionals.

Wingman: 1,2. Need damage check from last run.
Me: Roger, 2.

*I pull alongside, get too close bank my aircraft away only to have my wing rip his wing completely off. As he spirals down to his death...*

Me: 2, your wing appears to be bent. Also, there appears to be other debris falling off your aircraft now.

Wingman: Roger 1. Thanks. You bastard.

Me: Glad to help. 1 out.

I unsettled an old friend of mine in cfs2 once or twice on rogerwilco...by letting him know i was hit & going down, then as my plane hit the ground cutting my voice off,he found it quite disturbing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
