Moonlight Sonata was the German codeword for the blitz on Coventry (my hometown) that took place on the 14th and 15th of November 1940.

It was a clear night lit by a full moon, 400 - 500 hundred German bombers pounded the city into rubble. At the time It was the heaviest bombing raid ever launched. Planes were recalled from fronts all over Europe to deliver a crushing blow to this centre of British car and aircraft production. Heavier than anything even London had experienced, such concentration on a provincial city with a tightly packed shopping centre was utterly devastating. The fires could be seen for miles.

I would be very interested to know if this is going to be included, I can't see how it can be left out given the scale of the raid and the importance of Coventry at the time, i.e. tank and aircraft production.

Dunno Bader but imo if we're to see any Blitz bombing it would be on London. Also Liverpool and Southampton were hit hard over extended periods of time and even my city,Glasgow was a frequent target. But Coventry was an awesome show of force by the LW no doubt.
Wherever,I'm Looking forward to going turret gunner in a night fighter Boulton-paul Defiant, and hosing Heinkel pathfinders without mercy.

I'll be your pilot then Gilly.I know that you're aware of the survival rate of rear gunners who fly with me. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The Boulton-paul would be awesome. Apparently they used to wait for German aircraft to land, upon which they would fly underneath them - enough said. I can imagine it now, looking for the exhaust glow of enemy aircraft! wow, will be awesome.

I never fail to find the amount of aircraft the LW used against Coventry staggering. O.K., so there were larger raids in the war - well into 1,000+ bombers but it is a huge amount of aircraft to use against a relatively small city.

I still believe that the BP Defiant could of been a better fighter than history consigned it, if the Defiant had been allowed to develop more.Had it been given a better engine, frontal armament and the turret lightened I think it could of been good.
Unfortunately, it never happened and we'll never know. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I disagree, the Defiant was a dated design, and was never going to be a practical fighter, The Beaufighter was a much better night fighter than the Defiant Also. That and nothing even came close to the Spitfires development potential. But it will Be interesting to clear your tail when I'm flying a spit or Hurricane /i/smilies/16x16_robot-very-happy.gif

heh - the Spit is a definate no-go as a night fighter. Apparently the few times it was used it was a bit of a disaster because of the exhausts glowing and blinding the pilots!

Nothing new really. They did the same against that Spanish city I forgot the name of (I am supposed to know that too). The one that Picasso abstractly painted its destruction by German bombers during Spanish Civil WAR.

The weird thing about the SCW is the beautiful paint jobs on the killing machines. Its kinda, I dunno, just weird.

hahaha, yeah, if ya see some of then they actually have pieces of metal attached to block the line of sight between the pilot and the exhausts. I believe the gripe was the glow ruined thier night vision.

Anyway, I was talking about when the Defiants were still being used in daylight Intercepts.

Guernica!!! That was the name of the Spanish city. Was tearing my head inside out trying to remember and gave up. Stepped into the shower and it just hit me. I love it when that happens.

the city name you're looking for is "Guernica" (I think that's correctly spelled)

Must be spelled right, we guessed the same spelling. Thanks.
