Icons don't look very realistic but they serve a function for those of us who have older video cards and therefore are forced to run at a low resolution. I kind of hate icons, but feel for me they are necessary or I'll be too disadvantaged in my offline campaigns. For one thing, my AI buddies would have a greater tendency to get to the enemy fighters before I could get to them. Therefore I'd rarely get a kill, since the AI can "see" better than me without the icons. I'd be desparately looking around for bandits while they'd already be on their tails shooting them down. I say icons may be a necessary evil for some of us.

Didn't edit because of your post Balrog. Made a couple of posts to illustrate the absurdity of some of the arguments for/against "full real", padlock, etc. In hindsight was probably poor judgement, apologies to those who took it the wrong way.

As for the avatar...

I don't care for them either... subject line was tongue-in-cheek.

Hard to make a post these days without someone getting offended... I'll stick to router settings and hi-res posts http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I often play off and online but
i hate it when i have to play without
icons.

In real life planes are better to see from
above or....

After playing 1 hour online i am very tired
by the searching for targets.

On the other hand it keeps the long-distance flights a little bit more interesting .. staying in formation and thoroughly(!) checking for bandits.
With AI its not half the fun, since they have a radar or something like that http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
And for DF-servers Icons ON are a big helper for the BnZ-fighters (is that a good thing?? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

Nothing wrong with using the zoom. It's been gone over a hundred times by now, but the zoom most accurately coresponds to dimension (of gunsight etc. It's just that it's like sitting in your cockpit looking through a paper towel tube.) and distance view to real life. So zoom in for a more positive ID, zoom back out for combat and looking around. Perfectly legit.

And icons s@ck, LOL! And no, I don't have a super-duper rig. I have a pretty outdated rig with a laughably ancient vid card and I get along just fine without icons TYVM.
