I am curious as to how much damage a carrier can take and how many pounds of explosives you have to put into it to sink it?

about 5000 kg bombs it needs

7 torpedoes,or 2 tiny tims,or 1 naplam(if you are lucky) or a 1600 lber on the right place on the deck.

I actually did some weapons trials;
7 torpedoes is correct.
Sometimes 2 Tiny Tims are enough, but sometimes not. I tried with 5" HVAR's, i think i lost count after 60 or something. Never tried napalm, gotta do that.
The minimum bombload that i've sunk a carrier with was 1 2000lber and 2 1000lbers.

The 2 2000kg. bombs on the He 111 H6 work every time.

Be sure.

The only problem with that it that He 111H-6 historically did not have 2 X 2000kg bombs loadout.....

Some larger loads for He 111H-6 included: (but not restricted to)

1 X SC2500, or
2 X SD/PC1400 or
2 X SC1000 or
1 X SC1800 + 4 X SC250

Not sure why they gave us the 2 X SC2000 but it is not historical AFAIK.

Two tiny tim's and a Corsair to carry them work very nicely http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

2 hits with US 1600 lb. bombs will sink a large Japanese carrier.

Napalm dropped vertically onto the deck is by far the most effective, but also most difficult to get a solution with.

I've sunked one Japanese carrier with an 1600Lbs bomb, launched from an SBD in vertical dive. A beautiful direct hit...
