I has just raided Scapa Flow in Sept39 5mins ago and, amid heavy storm, in silent running mode, I suddenly heard ASDIIC pinging. Soon 3 Hunt I track me down accurately and put me into the death of the death.
The British super hydrophones in the intial phase of war is just...Now I know why Nazi lost. Becoz from now on, Port Raiding is next to impossible. And I wonder how could convoy attack be possible with such powerful enemy detector.

Are there any ways to turn their detection power down?

1941 January
Sunk a King George V BB.
Then took out a Fuji (cruiser).
and just for fun the medium tanker.

must be your timing.
Or they spotted your scope and they got frisky.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I believe there is a program called SH3 minitweaker (or something like that) that allows the user to change some in-game parameters as the sensors of enemy ships etc...

I can't help you to a download link or give you anymore information, since I don't use it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Silent running is not enough, you have to manually set speed to 2 knots.

Besides, harbour raids are REALLY dangerous, and very few kaleuns actually did it.

(But it is possible, you just have to be really careful)

Lock Ewe is a good raiding spot. Few escorts and lots of land for them to get stuck on, when I raid it early war I find usually 1 British medium merchant, a small merchant, and a medium tanker, two American merchants (one is a large merchant), and a hospital ship. The defenders are only two armed trawlers and a patrol boat, plus a moored armed trawler and a anchored destroyer (but not British!).

You can sneak in at two knots and escape without even being contested by the defenders.

Yes, I snuck in there too. Sunk the Battleship Anson as well as a cruiser. The destroyer was polish.

On this subject, I'll take the liberty of copying this most comprehensive post by Bootsmann0815. His instructions will allow you to set the escort crew capabilities down to the level of mere mortals.

"The easy way is to reduce the enemy crew rating from "Elite" to lower settings by editing the Campaign_RND.mis file. Open this file either with Notepad or with Word for Windows.

Each enemy warship has an entry which reads
"CrewRating" in its description. There are about 2,200 of those in UBWA, and of them 1,650 are "Elite" - indeed quite unrealistic in early war.
You can see the status of an enemy crew by the number in the CrewRating line
CrewRating=4 means Elite
CrewRating=3 means Veteran
CrewRating=2 means Normal
CrewRating=1 means Novice

You can now either manually assign lower crew ratings to each individual warship (that will take you a while), or use the Edit -> Replace All function in Notepad (takes over 50 min) or Word for Windows (takes 10 seconds).
In the "Replace" line you type
CrewRating=4
and in the "Replace with" line you type
CrewRating=3 (or =2 or =1) as per your preference. If you go with the "=1" option, former Elite units (i.e. the vast majority) become as stupid as the normal units in the stock game, but nevertheless retain their ability to execute more elaborate evasive manoeuvres and not just zig-zagging.

I recommend that you don't bother fiddling with sensor settings. The enhanced capabilities of the enemy units in UBWA are almost exclusively due to their higher crew rating compared to stock, and not because they got better equipment."

Of all the ports I enjoyed raiding the most it was Bristol, mind you that was with IUB and I have no idea what it's like with GWX - I guess I'm too chicken to attempt a one way journey up the Bristol channel where it can get very shallow in places.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

some of you have unrealistic expectations. Harbour raiding was too easy in stock SH3 how many times did it happen in WWII? The most famous one, Prien's sinking of Royal Oak happened right in 1939 remember.

Joeap asked:

The file being edited is one of the basic SH3 files.

I have used this modification on both V1.4b "Vanilla" and GWX.

Absolutely true! ....Port raiding was unrealistically easy in V1.4b.

.....but it is also unrealistic to have the majority of the escort crews rated "Elite" in 1939. (So a lttle bit of "tweaking" is not out of line.)

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/agreepost.gifTotally agree. I am still trying to figure out how a merchant can see me at 8000 meters converted to miles makes it about 4.9 miles. Even with the most powerful binos would make me look like a tiny speck.
