Could someone tell me what programs are used to create addon ac for IL-2? 3DSMax, Maya? Or does only the converting matter?

I believe that most if not all aircraft modeled for IL-2/FB by 3rd-party modelers were modeled in 3D Studio Max which costs several thousand dollars U.S. (I have seen $3750 up to $6000 posted as its retail price in various web forums...probably because different release versions and software bundles are involved). Maya, as I understand from these sources, costs about US$16,000. So, Maya is priced as a professional 3D modeling environment.

I would consider doing freelance modeling for FB just for fun, but, as a college student, I simply can't afford buying 3D Studio Max. Plus,I don't have the know-how.

Actually you left out Rhino. A student copy of Rhino can be had for about $ 350 US. The bad thing about Rhino is that it can't animate or texture. You can build something, use smoothing effects, etc and do a "save as" to .3ds file. You'd then have to cooperate with an experienced moddeler that uses 3D Studio Max to finish it.

I'm working on the German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin using a drafting program and fine tuning it in Rhino. At some point I'd gladly turn it over to a professional 3D Studio Max person to animate the weapons and texture it.

Buying big buck programs like that is for Graphic companies, for guys like you and I with no cash and going to college just grab it off the web. Go to Hotline client servers, tracker-tracker sites and download it for free, who's going to have that much money anyway. Besides Maya 4.0 is about $3,800.00 and 3D Studio Max about $1,200.00. I have both for $0. I don't use them to make money just to learn so I don't feel guilty. Alias Wavefront products are the best for 3D, try looking for Strata Studio Pro on the tracker sites, easy to learn with a better feel that 3D Max, older and available now.
