View Full Version : Few kills feel as good as this one did!

Flying an offline campaign in the Crimea with JG-52 and my Trusty and rusty 109\E-4.

My Squadron was scrambled on an intercept above this little Russian town 10KM to the southeast.
My JG does its job and dispatches the Rata's with ease while me and my wing slide into position behind a PE-2 and light him up. The action was quick but out of the corner of my eye I catch a glint of something way off on the horizon.

I change direction and head off into the distance looking for the ghost. About 40 kilometers and I give up and swing around for home. Just as I make my 180 degree I spot a black dot low and slow heading for an airfield 2 1/2 kilometers in front of it. Can I make it?
Im cruising at 3,500 meters or 10k feet! I close rads and put my Emil into a power dive.
Speeds gaining and my crates shaking to the point of almost coming apart! I level off on the deck and am approaching my target from his left rear side at almost 700 KMh!

His wheels are down and he is just 50 feet above the runway and had already passed the edge of the runway. AAA is opening up like mad all around me. I can finally identify my target, Its a R-2 recon plane. I have only a split second to line it up. My fire rakes his aircraft nose to tail as he rolls and tumbles onto the runway. My speed is so high that my firing time was less than 1 second before I had to nose down and dive under the tail of my burning victom. Screaming on the deck I easily out distance the AAA frantically firing in my direction!

Playing this sim since the demo was out in 2001.
Few kills matched the frantic adrenalin pumping realism of that last one and for a brief few seconds it was like I was there back in 1941.

i find the best kill are when you manege to shoot someone down through supirior meneuvering or if you are dameged and still maneges to nail your foe.

My best kill was lighting up a Zero with the fixed front guns on the B-25, he was about to attack another B-25 which was at my 10 o'clock about 100 feet below me. I turned and lined myself up behind and above him, I shot it down in one pass and I didn't hit the other B-25.

My worst kill was *ahem* shooting myself down, I was in the Ta-183 toying around with the X-4s and to cut a long story short I accidently turned the missiles through 180 degrees and I ended up flying into it and blowing myself up (pilot ended up looking like Wile E Coyote. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif)

online, scissoring with an me-262 in a p-47 was a good kill.

I can't pin point my favorite kill, but sometimes i have a good run and end up getting two or three planes in one pass from altitude.

thats always fun.

offline is a bit predictable, dont you think??

I find it hard to get the realism that others experience, but i still make use of the missions.

I use the A.I. mod so its a whole new ballgame and much more realistic since you can actually bounce some guys and they no longer pull the endless barrel roll as your sights get lined up.

I used to Play online allot as JG27*Horrido but that was back in the day. I find the opposite true
offline more realistic, online more arcadey.

Dont get me wrong the fights are more challenging against human opponents but there is NO coordination online, NO objectives, NO teamwork (Rarely), Just take off fly to nearest dot, furball and RTB. For some thats great, For me I like a good campaign. And in the Campaign there is no Vulching! Its called a Kill, HORRIDO!

the AI mod, where can i find that??

I like to build my own missions too. That's fun.
One day, i hope to share them when i have the technology to run a decent coop.

Their are servers with better objectives, but for the most part you are right when it comes to the monotony of flying online.
I've been in some great coops with realistic objectives, and once you crash/bail out/die, you have to wait for the next coop. Fuel and ammo management are more critical for that reason.
I would like to see a patch or mod that allows you to land and refuel or re-arm, and/or get into a fresh plane. I feel that's the biggest thing lacking for campaigns and missions.

Sounds great http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

It's given me an idea for a mission: Set up a flight of Me262s in the circuit returning to base low on fuel. The player (and wingman) are in a Tempest, Tunderbolt, etc circling the airfield just out of range of the AAA. Good chance of a prop vs. jet shoot down.

Its called CERT AI MOD. Its over at AAA in the WIP beta mods section. It really changes the game as A.I. aircraft no longer fly at max throttle all the time. Novice AI are easy to bounce and expert can still tear you a new ***.

Tail gunners are no longer sharpshooters and are more historically challenging, the closer you are the better they aim! But at least you can close without getting your engine smoked at 1 kilometer from target.

The AI mod is my favorite of all mods. You can find it here:

{warning - no links to mods} http://forums.ubi.com/eve/foru...3110283/m/7441010176 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/7441010176)

I agree with Freiwillige that offline can be better than most online activities; but I have found a squad that plays 100% coop missions and the camaraderie makes these missions the best fun yet.

Sorry BillSwagger, I think that the statement that playing against AI is inferior to humans is only valid for those that only want to play to win over other humans. Personally I find that all too often playing with other humans totally sucks (team-killers, shoulder shooters, kill-stealers, liars and deceivers can ruin any game for those that are there simply for fun, team-work and/or camaraderie). Lucky for us most of the HL online community is comprised of mature and admirable individuals and hence these problems are not the norm.

The ability to enguage in "Vulching" is just an indication that the opposition can't be bothered defending it's own airfield.

Although not glamourous, if your job is to destroy recon planes, That's what you need to do. Just think of the (virtual) lives lost if those recon pilots get the photos/intel back to their own intelegence officers!

Well done I say!

i agree with you, sir. I think playing with humans means you are interacting with different personalities and levels of maturity. You certainly wont meet AI with an attitude problem. lol.. I haven't installed the AI mod, but in comparison they are a bit more predictable, not necessarily inferior to playing actual people.

I agree, the victories that create the best endorphin rush are those achieved from disadvantaged positions. Several times, when attacking heavy bomber formations offline in a Fw 190D-9 or Bf 109G/K, my engine was rendered inoperative by return fire, but I was able to position myself during the long glide down to shoot down several bombers. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could perform small boom-and-zoom maneuvers with the engine out. These kills are my most memorable to date.

in my opinion those kills that include good gunnery feel great, good deflection shots where you pepper successfully the enemy, with most of the rounds hitting him and perhaps tearing a wing off.

then you can just casually yank the stick back, and head for home. a job well done http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

bear with me, im a noob in this game still http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
