Nice idea http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

My only hope is that the U Boat in question is not left to fester on some obscure pier like U-534 and not be shown to all to explain to the the youth of today the perils and dangers all brave seamen had to endure duuring the Second World War.

I hope they find someone who finances this.

A submarine is always a great attraction for a museum. And a VII is easier to house than a IX like U-505 in Chicago http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I bet the Silent_O spends a lot of time in that one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

After over 60 years of immersion, I have to wonder if there is really any point: "Really Good Shape" from a diver's point of view and "Really Good Shape" from a museum's point of view are two entirely different things.

I've never seen the U-534 in person, but the pictures I have seen lead me to believe that while that boat was in pretty good shape, it was not "restorable", at least in the normal usage of the word. I strongly suspect that this is why the U-534's future is so questionable: .....To those of us who are deeply into Uboats, the U-534 is fascinating: ......to the average guy on the street, it's a rusty mess.

To attempt to raise yet another 60 year old wreck, without a very clear "after-plan" seems a bit silly. (Sorry! .....but someone had to say it.)

I think it is a comendable project, people need to know about history. A scuttled boat is one thing, but if she was lost to battle I say let dead mariners rest in peace.

Would be great to see but not at the cost of dugging up a grave. Besides, nowadays, if there is no money to be made, How would spend the time and money to raise it?

Almost certainly not a War Grave - these boats would almost certainly have been those scuttled in Operation Deadlight in 1945. The report is a bit misleading, I think, in not making that clear.

Oh and I agree 100% with klCarroll - Looking at the state of U-534, and the general public apathy about preserving this (and other) bits of naval history, I don't think this stands a chance unless some billionnaire wants to make it his own project. The UK didn't manage to preserve even one of its wartime submarines (S, T, or U Class) - and don't mention HMS/M Alliance - too late for WW2, modernised and streamlined, used for 25 years post-war, hoisted out of the water for the RN Submarine Museum - and even that's rotting away! Similar story with the DD HMS Cavalier.

They don't look after the one they have.
They already have one they could put in a museum that no one seems to want.
To spend all that on raising another one does seem a bit silly.
