There was no "bubble" to "burst".
That was and still is a general thread warning, to prevent any possible bickerings, which sooner or later happen in this kind of threads and to stop the existing trend of off-topicness.
That should clarify things. If something is still unclear, any further questions can be addressed in PT.

He may be syrian, he may not, but his mother is christian (suggesting lighter skin) and his father is muslim (suggesting that this mix should bring medium skin...) so for all you know he could be anything!

Altair is in your language, it comes forum "Altar". and Altar is a very old Turkish name (comes from altar mountains in todays ukraine)but it used by many nations. also it is a historical name in todays ukraine.

Altair can be muslim, christian or jew. and can be turk, syrian/lebanese, ukranian, persian and greek. (all of them was used name of altar)

P.S: If u think all the turks are muslim u are wrong.
P.S.2: i dont care who hate me, who like me. if i check the world history i can find many nation to hate but history is history. Today is different.

ScytheOfGrim
10-24-2007, 09:08 AM
What? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

"Altair" means "The Bird". We know that already. It is Arabic.

But recently... I am beginning to wonder if the name was intended to e "The Bird", or "The Flier".

And for a number of reasons.
1. Jade always pronounced the name as "Altai'ir" (unless she was being lazy). This means that his name is "The Flier". If this is true... of course.
2.IGN posted his name in a recent preview, and wrote the pronounciation next to it, and they wrote "Altai'ir", meaning "The Flier".
3. {atrice also pronounced the name "Altai'ir".
4. Jade also answered what "Altair" meant in an interview, and she said "The Flier'.

Now I found it interesting, because sure, maybe IGN only copied what they said, but would the devs, the very people that took so much care inn making this game so accurate, make a simple mistake such as this?

It would be really interesting...

So either the devs are pronoucing his name wrong, or they have the wrong definition for the pronounciation that they are giving.

Confusing, but...

And you're right.
The mother was made Christian and the father Muslim, this was to help prevent any "political clashes" that may occur.

I think it was that way around...

EDIT:

And is there really a difference in meaning between "The Flier", "The Flying One" and "He Who Flies"?

Nope. They can all be derived from the name Altair, of course that is assuming that the name is pronounced as "Altai'ir".

AsskickQT
10-24-2007, 09:13 AM
i really thought it ment The Flying One but whats the point lets call him alta´r and not worry what it means

But it all depends on what the devs intended his name to be. And I think they wanted "The Flyer". So "Altai'ir".

The Assassins recruited from all over: they formed kind of their own independant nation. There are rummors that they took in war orphans or that they would steal infants. We probably never will know for sure where they got their ranks from. Some of them at least must have been born Assassins from the women in the Gardens of Paradise. Who knows.

Altair could be anything. According to an old Wiki article, his mother was christian and his father muslim, but that doesn't really help us as Christians and Muslims had been living side-by-side in numerous countries in that area for thousands of years and it was never a problem until the Crusades happened. So we don't know. Another meaning of the name "Altair" is "Son of None," implying he's kind of rootless, the Assassins are his people, he doesn't have anyone else.

If it helps, the model they used for his face is of mixed Spanish/French Canadian descent, and his voice actor is, I think, Iranian... Don't quote me on that, I'm not sure.

Altair can't POSSIBLY be American. America didn't EXIST back in those days.

and about "father was muslim and mother not" that can't be because if non-muslim women marries a muslim man she must exept islam and convert into one SO yes altair is an persian/syrian muslim

Not nessesarily. Yeah that might be how it's supposed to work, but there are exceptions to every rule. Maybe the reason his parents ended up with the Assassins was that his mom didn't convert and no one anywhere was recognizing the union.

Whatever Atlair's background is, it left him with no connections outside of his immediate community.

yea and altair is desmonds ancestor so that means that they are of the same bloodline. so that would make altair at least part american

Oh, jeez.
America didn't even exist in the 12th century!! Alta´r isn't Desmond's only ancestor, unless they reproduce like amoebas or something. How else could you have 2 parents, and 4 grandparents, and 8 great-grandparents? >_> Yeah, so just because I'm part German, for example, doesn't mean ALL of my ancestors automatically are.

Altair is half Christian, half Muslim. His religion lies in neither, rather, he is simply "spiritual".

I don't think they even though of a town he could've been born in so we won't find out anyway. My guess is that he's just a bas.tard(No - I am NOT using this as an insult but as the word it originally and officially means)born in the "gardens of paradise" or whatever you call that place assassins went to when they needed some "entertainment". Not very interesting, poetical, romantic or adventurous, I know, but I think it's the most realistic possbility.
My best friend's grand-father was a muslim from Algeria and her grand-mother is a half French half German jehovah's witness. Still, they got married, had three children and none of them changed their religion. Their daughters all decided to become christians and my friend herself is, well, let's call it "spritual".
I live in Luxembourg, we have a lot of muslims from Montenegro here and most of them don't mind going out with christians, jews and atheist.
So you see, not ALL muslims care about whether their wives change religion or not.
Now there could be a possible explanation for the spanish face model:
Being Portuguese, I know that before the crusades there was a muslim invason in Iberia. They called it "Al-Andalus" and according to wikipedia, "It has been stated that religious minorities were treated significantly better in Muslim-controlled Iberia than in Christian western Europe, living in a unique "golden age" of tolerance, respect and harmony." On the other hand, they could've just taken that guy cause they found him hot... In that cause we'd be wasting our time. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
I think the reason why they made Alta´r "half-christian" is simply because they were afraid the game wouldn't be a succes in the united states if the hero was a muslim assassin. That's also why I think they decided to make him "spiritual" instead of just saying "he's a muslim". I personally wouldn't have minded but it seems logical that Ubisoft wanted to make the game as popular as possible by making it appealing to everyone.

PS: His accent is not Californian. Listen to Anthony Kiedis or David Carradine speaking. That's Californian.

Oh, you mean "home"? Because I'm pretty sure the assassins with family went there to their wives when they wanted some "entertaiment". Or, what kind of entertaiment are you talking about? Circus?
